To our King Families:
We are sad to say Good-bye to Lisa Bradin our counselor
for the past two years. She will be leaving King and moving over to McLoughlin Middle school. We wish her well
at her new school. At the same time we are happy to announce that Margaret Trenholm is the new counselor at
King. Margaret comes to King from the state of Virginia.
She has an extensive background in counseling and is also
fluent in Spanish. Be sure to welcome her when you see
her in the building.
Also, congratulations goes to Lori Buckbee. She is moving
up to the cook position in the cafeteria. We are pleased to
have her in this position.
Attention Parents: The office needs your help. When you come to pick up your student, please plan to tell us the students full
name and their teacher’s name. This makes locating your student much quicker. Thanks for your help with this.
Lunch information: Remember you must complete a free/reduced lunch form every year. If you are still getting notes from the cafeteria regarding your students lunch, please call the office so we can get things cleared up.
Visitor Parking—Handicap Parking. There are two designated parking spots for visitors. Please use
these if you are planning an extended stay at school. They are the two just as you enter the parking lot by the
King reader board. The handicap parking spots by law are reserved for those who have the appropriate handicap placard hanging on their mirror or special license plate.
“Dream, believe, achieve: We can succeed!”

are absent.
Absences considered excused are:
Illness
Health Care Appointments
Family Emergencies
Religious Observance
Court appointments
Absence due to homeless situation
All other absences will be considered unexcused. Any
presentation of false evidence (e.g., telephone call or note)
in order to qualify for an excused absence may subject the
student to disciplinary action.
***********************************************
At Martin Luther King Elementary School we take attendance very seriously and it is our goal to have every student
in school "All day every day" unless they are sick. Students
with good attendance will be recognized each month and
they will have an opportunity to be placed in a drawing to
win prizes such as a skateboard, bicycle, G6 Airpark Party
for 10, G6 Airpark Party for 6, Papa John's Large 3-topping
pizza, G6 free entry pass, Mcdonalds Happy Meal, Burgerville breakfast sandwich, Izzy's Pizza Buffet pass, and other awesome prizes that we will announce later.
We encourage everyone to watch the numbers on the new
"Attendance board" in the parking lot where we will be
posting our daily attendance rate and the daily number of
tardies. Please make sure to call 360-313-1420 and excuse
your child if they are home sick.
Gastrointestinal illnesses (Vomiting and/or Diarrhea):
Vancouver Public Schools is now following these guidelines developed by the Clark County Health Department:
** Children, staff, and volunteers will need to stay home for 48 hours after the last time they
vomited or had diarrhea.**
Please assist us in keeping potentially contagious illnesses from spreading to others in your child’s school, by
keeping your child home from school for 48 hours.
Come pick up fresh food and produce in the Family Community Center on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 2:30 and
2:50 PM (Sponsored by Trader Joe's). Please bring your own
grocery bags if you have them.
Ven y toma comida fresca y productos en el Centro de Familia y la Comunidad los martes y jueves entre 2:30 y 2:50 PM
(Patrocinado por Trader Joe’s). Por favor trae tu propia bolsa si tienes.
Volunteering at King...We love to have parents volunteer in
our classrooms and chaperone on field trips. All volunteers are required to complete paperwork and be cleared by WSP
prior to volunteering at school. Clearance must be renewed every two years. Please stop by our office to obtain the appropriate forms. The approval process takes
approximately two weeks.
Fire Lane Rules
Any unoccupied vehicle in a marked
fire lane is subject to a parking fine
and a possible tow at the owner’s expense. It is acceptable to idle in a fire lane if someone is at the
wheel and prepared to immediately move. However, no vehicle may be left without a driver at any
time.
Levies and bonds support our students, staff and schools
Levy
• Vancouver Public Schools must renew a maintenance and operations levy this school year. If approved by the
superintendent and the board of directors, the measure will be on the Feb. 9 ballot.
• This levy will replace the current levy that expires at the end of 2016.
• Levies fund some of the costs related to maintenance, operations and educational services of schools, which includes teachers and support staff, classroom supplies, special programs and safety and security.
Bond
• The district also is in the second year of planning a bond measure for the Feb. 9 ballot.
• Bond sales support capital construction, remodeling and upgrades of our schools.
• The last bond measure the district ran was passed in 2001.
• If approved, a new bond would be used to rebuild several of our oldest schools.
• The bond also would pay for some improvements and upgrades at all other schools.
• District staff members, parents, students and members of the community have been involved in the initial planning stages and will continue to be involved as planning progresses.
Parents, please help us. If you are having to pick-up your student after school rather than them ride
the bus or go to day care/boys & girls club, please call the office NO LATER than 2:30 PM. We want all students to get home in a timely manner.
If you have sent the teacher an email be sure you have received a reply from them. Teachers don’t always
have time during their teaching time to read their email.
Please keep in mind, if you are wanting your student to ride a different bus or go home a different way, we need this in
writing. Phone calls can not be accepted for this. If the parent/guardian or someone on your emergency list needs to
pick-up your student a phone call will be accepted. Please be prepared to show ID.
Dropping Students Off
What is too early and what is too late?
Many parents have asked what is too
early for the playground. What time
may my child go in through the front door to class?
We do not staff the outside until 8 AM. For safety
reasons it is best for children not to arrive at school
before we have staff to monitor their play. If students are eating breakfast they may arrive at 7:50
AM.
Children are asked to go around to the doors of their
classrooms in the morning. This way we do not have a
rush for the front door as soon as the 8:20 bell rings.
The tardy bell rings at 8:30. We ask children to not
enter through the front door until about 8:20. Students all know these rules and are good about following them. Some may need a gentle reminder once in a
while to be redirected to the appropriate entrance.
Students arriving after the 8:30 bell rings must have
an adult come inside and sign them in.
Traída de los Estudiantes a la Escuela
Cuándo es muy temprano y cuándo es muy tarde? Muchos padres han preguntado, Cuándo es muy temprano
para ir al área de juegos? A qué hora debe mi hijo
