PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people of St. Vincent de Paul Church, see ourselves as a congregation of believers in whom Jesus is living;
and to do what we believe we are called to do, we set ourselves to proclaim our commitment to build, strengthen and enliven our parish
community; to strive to educate ourselves to make our witness more constant and more credible by our actions, to devote ourselves to serving one
another and all others in our community as did our patron, St. Vincent de Paul.

Safeguarding Children and
Addressing Abuse:
The Archdiocese Addresses Victims’ Concerns
— Since his arrival in 2001 and his
participation in the drafting of the Charter for
the Protection of Children and Young People,
Archbishop Myers has on many occasions
either individually or with bishops in the
United States, with the Holy Father, and with
clergy throughout the world, acknowledged
publicly the pain that sexual offenders inside
the Church have inflicted on the innocent. At
Chrism Masses before the entire presbyterate
and parish representatives of the Archdiocese,
in media interviews, in statements issued by
the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops, and in essays and columns,
Archbishop Myers has stated that “a Church
which spends the largest portion of its
resources and the largest portion of its
personnel in serving children, can never, and
will never, condone anything which harms
those children…We also extend our apology
and our assurance of support and help to
those who have been harmed and who are
seeking healing and support.”
Beyond words, however, are actions.
Assistance to victims, training and background
checks of staff and volunteers, reporting
accusations to civil authorities, removing
clergy with substantiated accusations – these
are clear indications that the Archbishop and
the Archdiocese abhor child abuse. What’s
more, 20 years ago, the Archdiocese was one
of the first dioceses in the country to establish
a formal Review Board of experts with legal,
law enforcement, clinical and investigative
background to examine allegations of abuse
and recommend to the Archbishop action
under Church law.

Background on the Gospel
Reading
Today as a Church, we conclude our liturgical
year and celebrate the Feast of Christ the
King. The Gospel we proclaim shows the great
mystery of our faith: In the moment of his
crucifixion, Jesus is shown to be King and
Savior of all.
Luke's Gospel has been loaded with surprises:
the poor are rich, sinners find salvation, the
Kingdom of God is found in our midst. Here
we see the greatest surprise of all. We are
confronted with the crucified Jesus, whom
faith tells us is King and Savior of all. The irony
is that the inscription placed on the cross,
perhaps in mockery, contains the profoundest
of truth. As the leaders jeer, the thief crucified
by his side recognizes Jesus as Messiah and
King, and finds salvation.
Jesus is King, but not the kind of king we might
have imagined or expected. His kingship was
hidden from many of his contemporaries, but
those who had the eyes of faith were able to
see. As modern disciples of Jesus, we, too,
struggle at times to recognize Jesus as King.
Today's Gospel invites us to make our own
judgment. With eyes of faith, we, too,
recognize that Jesus, the crucified One, is
indeed King and Savior of all.
Antecedentes sobre el
Evangelio
profunda verdad.
hacer nuestro propio juicio. Con ojos de fe,
nosotros también reconocemos que Jesús, el
Crucificado, es de hecho Rey y Salvador de
todos.

Music Notes
This Tuesday, November 22 is a special
day for all those involved in the ministry
of church music. Organists, choir
members , cantors, music directors and
instrumentalists remember in a special
way St. Cecilia whose feast is celebrated
that day and who has long been honored
as the patron saint of all musicians but in
a special way as the patron saint of
church musicians. St. Cecilia was a martyr
of the early church and is mentioned in
the First Eucharistic Prayer (the Roman
Canon). She is beloved by musicians and
is considered their patron saint because it
is said that in order to avoid entering into
a forced marriage by her parents she
“sang in heart only to God”. Her prayers
were answered. Her intended husband
converted to Christianity, respected her
wishes to remain a virgin and was
martyred for his new found faith. Cecilia
herself suffered the same fate a few days
later. One can usually identify
representations of St. Cecilia because she
is most often portrayed holding a
miniature model of a pipe organ. Our
church has a stain glass window of her. It
is appropriately located in the stairwell
leading up to the choir loft. In St.
Andrew’s church downtown she is
portrayed in the rose window located
behind the choir loft. On this Tuesday,
remember to say a prayer for all those
involved in the church music ministry.
Please mark your calendars now and plan
th
to be with us on Sunday, December 4 at
4PM. On that day we will be presenting
th
our 13 Annual Christmas Concert,
“Carols By Candlelight” here in the
church. The program will feature music
presented by our adult choir, cantors,
Family Mass youth choir and the Spanish
Mass youth choir. It promises to be an
exciting and memorable afternoon and it
will help you focus on the true meaning
of the holiday season. Among the many
carols to be performed will be such
holiday favorites as “Carol of the Bells”,
“The Little Drummer Boy”, “Oh Holy
Night” and “Do You Hear What I Hear”.
Numerous other works will be presented
which will inspire you and help you
temporarily set aside all the hectic
holiday preparations you need to attend
to. For 2 hours you can forget about all
the hustle and bustle associated with the
Christmas Season and enjoy the
peacefulness that comes from listening to
beautiful Christmas music in a serene
environment. There will be opportunities
for you to join with the choirs and fellow
concert goers in the singing of some of
our most beloved Christmas carols.
Nothing is more inspiring than to sing
“Silent Night” in a darkened church
surrounded by hundreds of people
holding lit candles. It’s a moment that will
help you remember the real purpose of
this season. There is no admission charge
and light refreshments will be served
immediately after the concert. Please join
us.
