This Sunday is designated as “Ecumenical Sunday.” It is a reminder to the whole Christian family to pray to Jesus to take away from us the scourge of our divisions as Christians. It is a scandal that we are separated from one another since Christ established one church and prayed fervently the night before He died for the unity of the Church. He knew that Satan who always seeks to divide would try over and over again to bring dissension within the household of the church. And even from the earliest years of the church Satan did his work of trying to introduce false doctrines and confusion into the teaching of the church. He is a constant menace and since the 1500’s was successful in creating deep divisions within the Christian ranks. Those who protested against certain teachings of the Catholic Church became known as “protestants.” Each year there are even more divisions within the ranks of protestants so that now there are upwards of 40,000 different sects within Protestantism. It will only be through God’s grace that healing and unity can come to the Church. The Catholic Church is like a good mother who always seeks to unite her family. That is why we as Catholics cannot be satisfied with the status quo but must always pray and work actively to bring all Christians together into one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church. The Catholic Church was founded by Christ upon the faith of the Apostles and will continue until the end of time but we must invite our separated brothers and sisters to return to their mother. Let us offer our Mass this Sunday for that intention. The week of prayer for Christian Unity started January 18th and will conclude tomorrow, on the Feast of the conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. Since St. Paul is one of our heavenly patrons it would be good to remember his Feast day January 24, 2016 tomorrow even if we cannot come to the 7:00 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. Mass. St. Toribio Chapel Some of you have undoubtedly seen the interior of the St. Toribio Chapel by now. It is almost completed. When the new tabernacle arrives from Italy and the altar cloths are made and the altar itself is completed and the image of St. Toribio installed above the altar and the holy monogram of Jesus is placed in the highest space above the altar we should be ready for the blessing!! Maybe by the time you read this letter some of those things will have been put in place. The blessing is still scheduled for Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend the special Mass with Bishop Slattery and Bishop Flores and the reception afterwards. But, we still have to find more money because as of 1-7-16 we still owe $76,655.00. One or two thousand comes in almost every week and I would hope that we continue to donate until it is paid for completely. It will be a huge burden lifted from my mind when it is finished because it has been a struggle to get the chapel constructed as you know. So be generous please and let’s keep giving until the bill is paid. The chapel will be a place of constant prayer if we are able to get perpetual adoration started. I have invited a priest from Columbia to come and help us organize perpetual adoration. He will be here the week of March 5th through the 12th. Details of his visit and of the Masses etc. will be coming and so please keep reading the bulletin so you’ll know what is going on with regard to Father’s visit. His name is Father Jose del Carmen. Let us keep him in our prayers as he is undoubtedly under attack from our Enemy because of the great work that he is doing for God. If all goes as hoped we will initiate perpetual adoration on Divine Mercy Sunday which will be April 3rd. It was 12 years ago that we first initiated weekly confessions during the week and started some of the adoration hours. Ash Wednesday Let us prepare for the beginning of Lent which falls on Wednesday, February 10th. Lent comes early this year. Our Mass schedule for Ash Wednesday will be 6:30 a.m. Latin Low Mass/, 8:30 a.m. School Mass/, 10:30 a.m. Latin sung Mass/, 5:30 p.m. English Mass/, 7:00 p.m Spanish Mass and 8:30 p.m. Spanish Service with distribution of ashes. Ash Wednesday is a day of prayer and fasting. Adults aged 18-59 inclusive are bound to the law of the fast. On the days of Fast only one meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are observed as days of abstinence as well as fast. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are permitted. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by those 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Fridays of Lent This year English Stations of the Cross will begin at 5:30 p.m. on all Fridays of Lent except Good Friday which has a special schedule. The simple Lenten dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m. Donations are accepted for the poor. At 7:00 p.m. Spanish Stations of the Cross will be held. Parish groups are responsible for the Lenten dinners and all are welcome to attend. Fridays are days of abstinence for anyone 14 years of age and older. The first Friday of Lent is February 12th. The Sisters from El Salvador Three sisters have been selected from the Hijas del Divino Salvador from El Salvador and they are in the process of getting their religious work visas. This process takes some time but they are hopeful that very soon they’ll be here to begin their work in our parish. Please pray that all goes well for them in this process. Their convent is ready whenever they arrive. Thank you for your attention to these happenings around the parish and for your involvement in the life of our community. God bless each of you. Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation: God is Rich in Mercy An Examination of Conscience How do you train your conscience? God’s Word has provided us with the Ten Commandments for examining our consciences, as well as the Sermon on the Mount (see Mt 5-7)., The Duties of Christians ( Rom 12-15), and St. Pauls’ Hymn to Love (1 Cor 13). Using the Ten Commandments to Examine Your Conscience 5. You Shall not Kill You shall shun murder, scandal, hatred, and vindictive anger. Jesus asks you to be for life. Vindictive anger, hatred, and scandal tempt us to be against life. Abortion, murder and other forms of violence require us to respond by affirming life. What has been your attitude to the sanctity of life? Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis January Universal: That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace and justice. Evangelization: That by means of dialogue and fraternal charity, and with the grace of the Holy Spirit, Christians may overcome divisions. The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Dr, Frances Wen at OU is conducting a study concerning why seniors who might be having trouble living independently refuse in-home services that could help them. The study is funded through a National Institutes of Health grant titled: “When They Say No: Older Adults’ Perspective of Home-andCommunity-Based Services”. We would like to offer seniors who are 65 or older and who have had to consider using these services an opportunity to participate in this study. We offer compensation for participants’ time and travel. Please contact Samuel Kirzner, Research Assistant at 918- 619-4754 or [email protected].
