JOSEPH January 18,2015 From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath YOUCAT is the official “Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church” translated from the German original (2010) into English and published in the United States in 2011. This book deals with all the official teachings found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1997) in a language and style appealing to the youth in the format of question and answers. This book is very handy and topics are discussed in a concise manner for easy grasping. During the turmoil after the Vatican II many of the popular practices and rituals were thrown off board from our spiritual arena. The inadequate understanding of the Council Documents due to uneducated and unbridled interpretations of them by liberally motivated individuals, most often uncensored by appropriate authorities, created this chaos. In that whirlwind the church as well as many a naïve soul suffered tremendously. It is no denying that there were irrational piety and devotions plaguing the authenticity of our spiritual traditions. There are two aspects to this change. To its credit many unfounded sentimental practices were eliminated. But the cleansing of the garden was done in a slash and burn manner with no definite strategy for replanting and restoring the glory. This went so long that the spiritual barren land was devastating to average believers. Proportionate blending of passion and reason is essential for any personally fulfilling human act. It is the leaders who mostly have to prevent tilting the balance. Rituals and devotions satisfy sentimental and passionate longing of an average devout soul. It is encouraging to see that popular piety is being restored and promoted in the church in a more refined and scripture based format. The Youcat # 274 explains that, “popular piety which is expressed in veneration for relics, processions, pilgrimages, and devotions, is an important way in which the faith becomes inculturated. It is good as long as it is in and of the Church, leads to Christ, and does not try to “earn” heaven by works, apart from God’s grace”. Reference to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: ( 1674-1676) . Needless to say, Faith is a gift from God so also Salvation. Jesus has earned it for us through His suffering, death, and resurrection. On our own we are helpless. It is only by accepting Him as our Lord and Savior, and developing a personal intimacy with Him that we can receive this salvation. “ Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him” (Jn. 3:36). All our devotions and pious activities are geared to foster this relationship with Jesus. Nothing should turn us away from this focus on the Lord Jesus. We venerate saints, especially Blessed Mother Mary, for their intercessory support. Their devout lives provide us with practical models on our spiritual journey. Always Jesus is the center of all devotions. God bless you all. Welcome to Visitors & New Members You are welcome to worship with us at any time. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true “last rite.” We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul?—Rev. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
