MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God
as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

AUTHORITY FROM GOD
AUTORIDAD DE DIOS
According to Moses, the people
decided they didn’t want to hear God’s
voice directly any more. It was much too
frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God
agreed, but with a warning. The people
had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name.
That arrangement, though, had its
own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher
is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts
of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture
to help us with those questions, but still there are always a
few loose ends.
That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s
Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he
taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.”
The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a
teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him.

De acuerdo a Moisés, el pueblo decidió
que no quería ya más oír la voz directa de
Dios. Era demasiado aterradora. ¿Por
qué no les podía Dios enviar a maestros o
profetas humanos? Dios aceptó pero con
una advertencia. El pueblo debía escuchar a
estos maestros, puesto que hablaban en
nombre de Dios.
Ese acuerdo, sin embargo, resultó en
otros problemas, para ellos y para nosotros. ¿Cómo sé si este
maestro es en realidad de Dios? Y si el maestro es de Dios,
¿están todas las partes de su enseñanza dirigidas a mí?
Tenemos la Iglesia y la Sagrada Escritura para ayudarnos con
todas estas preguntas, pero así y todo siempre quedan algunos
cabos sueltos.
Ese es el poderoso significado de la frase en el Evangelio de
hoy: "Los oyentes quedaron asombrados de sus palabras, pues
enseñaba como quien tiene autoridad y no como los escribas".
El pueblo sabía que este Jesús era auténtico—verdaderamente
un maestro enviado por Dios. Lo sabían con sólo escucharle.

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Each of the readings for today presents us with different yet
similar messages in the relationship we have or should maintain
with our Lord. In Deuteronomy, which is the last book of the
Torah (the Law), has as its purpose to teach Israel how to live
in the Promised Land. The reading also provides us with the
foreshadowing of Christ, a prophet like Moses, given from their
kin an intermediary or messiah. This is the promise made to
Moses by God because the people were afraid of the mighty
power of God and the ramifications for them if they did not
abide by their promises to God. In a very real way, this promise
by God assures us of His continued presence in our lives.
Psalm 95 is an invitation to come to the temple to praise the
Lord regularly. The Psalm reminds us of God’s overall power in
the heavens and poses the question concerning our behavior,
does our behavior really say we are God’s people? The result
of inability or desire not to serve God is what kept the first
generation of the People from not being able to enter the
Promised Land…they had abandoned their loyalty to God. The
words Meribah and Massah have significance for us even
today…Meribah means “strife or contention” and Massah
means “testing.” We could very well by our behavior find
ourselves in a similar outcome. Let us, therefore, commit to be
God’s people and live by His word so that we too can enter
the eternal land of milk and honey. Saint Paul, in the Second
Reading, adds his wisdom by also challenging us to “to be free
of anxieties” and to live without distraction to stay focused on
the Lord.
In the Gospel, Mark presents Jesus as a person of power and
authority. He wants the reader to know that Jesus is above all.
Mark tells us that people were amazed by the authority with
which Jesus taught and that in such a short time his fame was
of notice. People were not only astonished by his miracles but
by the controls he had over demons. Mark also points out that
the demons knew who Jesus was, yet the crowds and his own
disciples did not understand Jesus and the significance of his
purpose to them. Perhaps this point is a concern for us. Do we
really know and understand Jesus? Do we listen to Jesus? Do
we fulfill and dedicate ourselves to his purpose?
I pray that you take the time to seek Jesus in the quietness
of the day and let your heart listen for his voice and loving
response to your prayers. Trust in Him and He will trust in you.

Cada una de las lecturas de hoy nos presenta mensajes
diferentes y a la vez similares en la relación que tenemos o
debemos mantener con nuestro Señor. En Deuteronomio, que es
el último libro del Torá (la Ley), tiene como objetivo enseñar a
Israel cómo vivir en la Tierra Prometida. La lectura también nos
proporciona la prefiguración de Cristo, un profeta como Moisés,
dado por sus parientes como un intermediario o mesías. Esta
es la promesa hecha por Dios a Moisés, porque la gente tenía
miedo de la grandeza de Dios y las ramificaciones para ellos si
no cumplian sus promesas a Dios. De una manera muy real,
esta promesa de Dios nos asegura Su continua
presencia en nuestras vidas.
El Salmo 95 es una invitación para ir al templo para alabar al
Señor con regularidad. El Salmo nos recuerda el gran poder de
Dios en los cielos y plantea la pregunta sobre nuestro
comportamiento, ¿Nuestro comportamiento da testimonio de
que somos el pueblo de Dios? La incapacidad o el deseo de no
servir a Dios es lo que mantuvo la primera generación sin
poder entrar en la Tierra Prometida. . . habían abandonado su
lealtad a Dios. Las palabras Meriba y Masá tienen un significado
para nosotros, incluso hoy. . . Meribá significa "la lucha o la
discordia" y Masá significa "pruebas." Podríamos por nuestro
comportamiento encontrarnos con los mismos resultados. Por
lo tanto, comprometamonos a ser el pueblo de Dios y vivir de
acuerdo a su palabra para que también nosotros podemos
entrar la tierra eterna de leche y miel. San Pablo, en la segunda
lectura, añade su sabiduría con un desafío de "estar libre de
ansiedades" y vivir sin distracciones concentrados en el Señor.
En el Evangelio, Marcos presenta a Jesús como una persona
de poder y autoridad. Él quiere que el lector sepa que Jesús
está por encima de todo. Marcos nos dice que las personas se
sorprendieron por la autoridad con que Jesús enseñó y que en
tan poco tiempo adquirio gran fama. La gente no sólo se
sorprendió por sus milagros, sino por el control que tenía
sobre los demonios. Mark también señala que los demonios
sabían quién era Jesús, pero la multitud y sus propios discípulos
no entendieron a Jesús y el significado de su propósito para
ellos. Tal vez este punto es una preocupación para nosotros.
¿Realmente conocemos y entendemos a Jesús? ¿Lo escuchamos?
¿Cumplimos y nos dedicamos a Su propósito?
Rezo para que se tomen el tiempo de buscar a Jesús en la
tranquilidad del día y que dejen que su corazón escuche Su voz
y la amorosa respuesta a sus oraciones. Confía en Él y Él confiará
en tí .

The Oil of the Sick, usually labeled
OI (for Oleum Infirmarum), is often
reserved with chrism and the oil of
catechumens in an ambry. An ambry is
a cabinet, often beautifully ornamented
and kept near the baptistery in the
church. Olive oil, with no fragrance
added, is blessed at the Chrism Mass
in Holy Week by the bishop, although
there is now a provision for a priest
to bless oil if none is available. This
restores to our Latin Rite practice a
tradition never lost in the Eastern
tradition, in which priests consecrate
the oil of the sick, even at the sick
person’s home. Any vegetable oil may
be used now, since olive oil is difficult
to obtain in some places. Many priests
keep a small supply of oil close at hand
in a small metal tube called a “stock.”
In the former rite, every sense of
the body was anointed, accompanied
by a prayer for forgiveness of sin. So,
the eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, hands,
and feet were all touched. Today, this
is simplified to an anointing of the
forehead and the hands, but generally
today the oil is used more lavishly,
and the symbolism of touch so central
to the rite is enhanced. Often, a priest
will invite everyone present to join in
the “laying on of hands.” Sick persons
are often pushed aside or feared in
our culture, and to be reverently
touched in love can be a profound
experience of God’s healing, forgiving,
accepting presence through the ministry
of the Church.
Muchos católicos suelen encender una
velita de cera ante una imagen de Jesús,
María u otro santo. Esa velita representa
un recuerdo de la oración hecha por el
cristiano y suele quedarse encendida
varios días. Hoy, muchos templos han
reemplazado la vela de cera con luces
eléctricas que imitan el fuego de la velita.
A muchos no les gusta y se resisten al
concepto. No los culpo, ya que hay algo
muy especial en la acción ritual de
encender una vela. Sin embargo, hay
que recordar que lo importante es la
oración y no la velita. Hoy se enciende
la vela eléctrica, en tiempos pasados la
vela de cera, pero en el primer milenio
cristiano se encendía una lámpara de
aceite de olivo. Según la historia pasaron
varios siglos antes de que la Iglesia aceptara
la vela de cera en lugar de la de aceite.
Los cristianos del siglo XIII se negaban
a aceptar lo que hoy consideramos
tradicional, la vela de cera. Hay que
aceptar que nuestras tradiciones cambian
al correr del tiempo. No importa si
quemamos aceite, cera o electricidad.
Lo que importa es velar en oración.

for failure to renounce his faith, a
distraught mother, whose only child
was choking on a fishbone, threw herself
at his feet and implored his intercession.
Touched at her grief, he offered up his
prayers, and the child was cured.
Consequently, Saint Blaise is invoked
for protection against injuries and
illnesses of the throat.

WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE
Celebrated in Parishes Feb 7-8, 2015
In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of
prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This
celebration is attached to the Feast of the
Presentation of the Lord on Feb 2. This feast is
also known as Candlemas Day; the day on which
candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the
light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life
are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all
peoples. The celebration of World Day for Consecrated
Life is transferred to the following
Sunday in order to highlight the gift
of consecrated persons for the
whole Church.
DÍA MUNDIAL DE LA VIDA CONSAGRADA
Celebrado en Parroquias 7 a 8 Feb de 2015
En 1997, el Papa Juan Pablo II instituyó un día
de oración por las mujeres y los hombres en la
vida consagrada. Esta celebración se une a la
fiesta de la Presentación del Señor, el 2 de
Febrero. Esta fiesta también es conocida como el
Día de la Candelaria; el día en que se bendicen
las velas simbolizando a Cristo que es la luz del
mundo. Así también, los de la vida consagrada
están llamados a reflejar la luz de Jesucristo a
todos los pueblos. La celebración de la Jornada
Mundial de la Vida Consagrada se transfiere al
Domingo siguiente con el fin de poner de relieve
el don de la vida consagrada para la Iglesia entera.
