—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. May God bless you for your goodness! Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Gloria Dei Choir sings “Gabriel’s Message,”a Basque folk carol (Basque: Birjina gaztetto bat zegoen) about the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary by the Archangel Gabriel that she would become the mother of Jesus Christ. The carol was collected by Charles Bordes and then paraphrased into English by Sabine Baring-Gould. Our arrangement for SATB voices and organ is by Rod Mather. The carol text quotes the biblical account of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) and the canticle Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) with its opening lines: The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; "All hail", said he, "thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured lady." Gloria. During Communion, the choir sings Sergei Rachmaninoff’s setting of the Ave Maria from his All-Night Vigil (Russian: Всенощное бдение) his Op. 37, written and premiered in 1915. The Ave Maria is the sixth movement of fifteen works that comprise the musical liturgy of the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. It has been praised as Rachmaninoff’s finest choral composition and “the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church.” As required by the Russian Orthodox Church, Rachmaninoff based ten of the fifteen sections on chant. However, the five original sections (which include the Ave Maria) were so heavily influenced by chant that the composer called them “conscious counterfeits” of existing chants. The choir will sing the Ave Maria text in English translation under the guest direction of Neda Kandimirova St. Clair, a native of Bulgaria and Eastern Orthodox Christian with extensive experience conducting and singing the Orthodox choral repertoire. —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director Gloria Dei Choir Page 7 Jubilee Year of Mercy Fourth Sunday of Advent In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative. Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
