are baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our
time and resources in the service of God and neighbor.

The Baptism of the Lord /El Bautismo del Señor
A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions
between rich and poor, our Catholic tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. What obstacles discourage you from making a personal commitment to those in need? If you changed your personal buying habits, how you spend your free time, or if
you became more politically active would you be better able to address the social issues that impact the poor and
vulnerable? It’s the beginning of a “new” year, a time when many of us make resolutions. This year, resolve to
act on your calling to build a just society. Make a commitment to learn more about our Catholic Church’s Social
Teaching and see what scripture says about the Option for the Poor and V ulnerable. Visit the following website:

“The three disciples caught up in ecstasy hear the Father’s call to listen to Christ, to place all their trust in Him, to
make Him the center of their lives. The words from on high give new depth to the invitation by which Jesus Himself,
at the beginning of His public life, called them to follow Him, to leave their ordinary lives behind and to enter into a
closer relationship to him. It is precisely this special grace of intimacy which, in the consecrated life, makes possible
and even demands the total gift of self in the profession of the evangelical counsels. The counsels, more than a simple renunciation, are a specific acceptance of the mystery of Christ, lived with the Church. This is the meaning of the
call to the consecrated life: it is an initiative coming wholly from the Father (cf. Jn 15:16), who asks those whom He has chosen to respond with complete and exclusive devotion. The experience of this gracious love of God is so deep and so powerful that the person
called senses the need to respond by unconditionally dedicating his or her life to God, consecrating to Him all things present and future,
and placing them in His hands. This is why, with Saint Thomas, we come to understand the identity of the consecrated person, beginning with his or her complete self-offering, as being comparable to a genuine holocaust.”

Los tres discípulos atrapados en éxtasis escuchan la llamada del Padre a escuchar a Cristo, a poner toda su confianza en él, para hacer de él el centro de sus vidas. Las palabras de lo alto le dan una nueva profundidad a la invitación que Jesús mismo, al comienzo de su vida pública, los llamó a seguirle, a dejar sus vidas ordinarias atrás y
entrar en una relación más cercana con él. Es precisamente esta gracia especial de intimidad que, en la vida
consagrada, hace posible e incluso exige el don total de sí mismo en la profesión de los consejos evangélicos. Los
consejos, más que una simple renuncia, son una aceptación específica del misterio de Cristo, vivido con la Iglesia.
Este es el significado de la llamada a la vida consagrada es una iniciativa que viene totalmente del Padre (cf. Jon 15:16), que le pide a

The English as a Second Language and Citizenship Preparation Program (ESL) will begin registering
adult students on Tuesday and Thursday January 12 and 14, 2016 at the Hartmayer Education Building
from 7:00-9:00pm. The program is FREE and is open to any immigrant adult student who wants to
learn or improve their English and also to those who have permanent residency and want to prepare for
the US Citizenship Test. Classes will begin on Tuesday, January 19 from 7:00—9:00pm.

The Baptism of the Lord!
John the Baptist was a cousin of Jesus and became a preacher. He told people to ask for forgiveness for things they had done
and change their lives to become a new person inside and that they needed God in
their life. He lived a very simple life and felt that God was all he needed. When
people went to John to be baptized they were wondering if he was the Savior they
had waited for. John told them, “I am baptizing you now, but very soon someone greater than me will
come.” John told the people that it would be an honor to carry the shoes of Jesus. One day Jesus did
come to be baptized. John told Jesus, “You should be baptizing me, I cannot baptize you Lord.” Jesus told John, “It is important that I do this now, I am ready and I want to be an example to others and
show them that it is important.” So John baptized Jesus by laying Him down until He was covered by
the water and then brought Him back up again. As soon as Jesus was baptized the sky opened up
and the Holy Spirit came like a beautiful white dove and landed right on Jesus’ shoulder. Then a voice from heaven said, “This is
my Son, I love Him and I am pleased with Him.”

Church Etiquette
1. Come prepared for Mass—read the Scriptures ahead
of time. Arrive on time.
2. Dress appropriately—no tank tops/gym shorts/t-shirts
with inappropriate signage.
3. Reserve the handicapped spaces in front of the Church
for those who need them most. Be courteous to fellow
parishioners in the parking lots.
4. Socialize in the Gathering Space, NOT the Sanctuary—be sensitive to those who come for quiet prayer
time.
5. Use your “Church Voice” - even in the Gathering Space.
6. Welcome one another—be hospitable.
7. Do NOT chew gum in Church—or on the property.
8. Participate actively in the liturgy—sing & recite
responses.
9. Respect the Church property—don’t bang kneelers,
keep the restrooms clean & orderly, no food in Church.
10. Before, during, & after Mass is NOT the time for long
chats/counseling with Priests & Liturgy/Music
Director—make an appointment—many are waiting to
greet them.

Adult Speaker Series – Welcoming families of
individuals with Autism and other special needs.
Approximately 1 out of every 6 children have developmental
delays or developmental disabilities. Many of these families
do not come to church because their stress is increased by
attending and they feel rejected. This workshop will provide
valuable information about how to create a church environment that welcomes families with individuals with Autism
and other special needs. Plan to gain a basic understanding of Autism, strategies for engaging individuals with Autism, and how to get started in this important mission field.
