JOSEPH January 11,2015 From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath Catholic tradition is full of celebrations of feasts and commemorations, especially around the mysteries of the Lord Jesus. We just celebrated Epiphany which is the great feast after Christmas. This is the feast of the manifestation or revelation of the person of Jesus. As we know, visit of the Magi and the Baptism of the Lord are combined in certain traditions as the manifestation of the person of Jesus. When we reflect on the Epiphany, there are several facets to this great event: At the baptism of the Lord, God the Father proclaims Him as His “beloved Son” (Mt.3:17; Mk.1:11; Lk.3:22 ), prophets and priests (Lk.2:22-40 ) as well as the Wise Men from the orient (Mt.2:1-112 ) acknowledge Him as the Messiah, and Jesus Himself claims (Lk.4:16-22 ) as the promised Messiah. There is an external aspect and a personal dimension to this event. In the first case the revelation takes place without any initiative from Him and the whole incident is out of His control. Jesus passively embraces the revealed identity. Whereas the second aspect is what invites our attention and is very relevant to our faith journey as well. It is His process of growing into that Identity and manifesting it to the whole world and challenging us to accept Him and embrace that process in our faith journey as well. It is very pertinent to observe that after the circumstantial revelations at the temple, Jesus settles down to the ordinary and natural process of human growth and development which all of us can easily identify with. This is the puzzling mystery of the Incarnation and the resultant Redemption of humanity. It is worth noting that God did not want to impose on us our salvation without any of our personal involvement but He rather wanted us to be responsible for it and personally make a choice and claim its ownership. For the very reason, His growth like any human person and gradual assuming the Divine identity and revealing it, is the process which enables us to have the confidence to follow Him. Born into a human family, growing with parents in humble human situations, facing the existential challenges and crises of ordinary human life, Jesus has fully identified with the human family so that no human person is excluded from His saving process. This process makes it natural and gives us confidence to think that it is possible for us to achieve this salvation. For us the external aspect of epiphany is our faith in the family, church, and personal life. The internal aspect is a constant effort to grow in holiness by a personal intimacy with Jesus and a commitment to unceasingly seeking the will of God in every moment of our lives with a firm resolve to do it. These two aspects will narrow down our interests and involvements into a focus on the Kingdom of God and we will stand for our faith and stand for our Lord.. God bless you all. This church is in fact a baptistery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome. The Emperor Constantine sponsored its construction in the year 315, and it is therefore the oldest baptistery in the world. It is the model for nearly all later baptisteries, including perhaps the font in your own parish church. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PARISH OF ST. TREASURES AND TRADITIONS In the 1560s, the Council of Trent attempted to standardize the widely variant customs for the pastoral care of the sick and dying. We had inherited a practice called “extreme unction,” from the Latin words meaning anointing at the point of death. The deeper tradition, however, is about the prayer of faith that will heal and restore the sick person, and is straight from the Letter of James. The Fathers went back to the beginning, and while not discarding the “extreme unction” name, made a plea for the proper use of this sacrament. As soon as a person is in danger of death from sickness or old age, they reasoned, the time for the sacrament had already arrived. As a result of this desire, the next ritual text for anointing contained an innovation: a rite for visiting the sick that included readings from scripture, psalms, and prayers. Old customs fade slowly, however, and the quality of pastoral care languished for centuries while people delayed the celebration of a consoling and effective sacrament, sometimes missing the opportunity completely. A priest ministering to a dying and unconscious patient alone in a room has never been the desire of the Church. Our tradition is far too rich for this sacrament to be celebrated in such a diminished and ungenerous manner. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. REHEARSAL Psalms are sung in the home and rehearsed in the streets. —St. Ambrose 6 Iglesia De San Jose January 11,2015 Fr. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
