LETTER FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Parishioners, Friends, and Benefactors,
I read this past week information about a sociologist at the University of Notre Dame who conducted
an extensive research on the religious beliefs of young Americans from every major faith group. His studied
concluded that regardless of their religious affiliation, young Americans tend to subscribe to a faith he calls
Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.
The dogma of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism is this: “God exists, and desires that people be good,
nice, and fair to one another. God can be called upon to assure happiness and to resolve crises. Being
good, nice, and fair assures eternal salvation in heaven.”
Basically what this way of thinking does is reduce religious thought and practice to a set of
sentimental and affirming principles without a sense of the presence of a transcendent, personal, and
transformative God. It is a faith of mediocrity, narrow-mindedness, and loneliness. It requires no greatness
of soul. And it engenders no virtue, no charity, and no heroism. This may fit well with the Church of “nice” I
wrote about in last week’s bulletin, but it is a far cry from the reality of the Church as the Church understands
herself in relation to Jesus Christ.
Actually I’m sharing thoughts of James Conley from his commentary on the research that identifies
young Americans as Moral Therapeutic Deists. Conley writes, “Christianity is not a faith of mediocrity. It is
the faith of unmerited greatness – the faith of heroic virtue, unsurpassed hope, and unbounded charity. The
Christian life elevates humanity in the great sanctifying process of being transformed into the very likeness of
God.” This means we have the capacity to be transformed into the beauty of God. This means we have the
capacity to love as God loves. This means we have the capacity to think as God thinks, to see as God sees,
to feel as God feels, to touch as God touches. Of course this is only possible to the extent that we allow
Jesus to reproduce his life in us.
I wonder if this isn’t what we most fear in relationship to God. We fear the loss of ourselves. But
recall that Jesus said, “Lose yourself and you’ll find yourself.” Only in finding God will we find ourselves. For
this to happen we must throw ourselves into the gospel story and find ourselves in the lives of those
wonderful men and women who in finding Jesus found themselves. Something so dramatic happened that
they had the courage and the joy to go to their death as martyrs for the faith rather than deny Jesus. As I so
often remind you, the gospel story is perpetuated through history – the same story – only the characters
change.
We are the people the Lord wishes to write into his story today and forever. The Saints are
history’s witnesses to the enduring power and presence of God through history. History needs our response
today. The well-being of the future depends largely on our willingness to get into the story and make a mark
for love of God and love of his creation.
I encourage all of you to consider seriously participating in the Sacred Triduum. The Sacred Triduum
is the liturgical celebration of three days that bring us from Lent into the season of Easter. This is a
remembering and re-living the story at the heart of our faith. This is the story that calls us into the arduous
adventure of life, putting to death mediocrity, narrow-mindedness, and loneliness. Our story is about
mysticism - the mystery of God who spared himself nothing to convey the incomprehensible love he has for
each and every one – God whose ultimate desire is to sweep each and everyone into God’s divinity. Such an
experience leaves us changed forever and forever moving forward. Let us then throw ourselves into the
story that it be written ever more deeply into the conscience of a world whose salvation rests alone in the life,
suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

CARTA DEL PÁRROCO
Estimados Feligreses, Amigos, y Benefactores,
Esta semana pasada leí sobre un sociólogo de la Universidad de Notre Dame que condujo una
investigación extensiva sobre las creencias religiosas de los jóvenes Americanos de cada grupo de las religiones
más grandes. Sus estudios concluyeron que independiente de su afiliación religiosa, los jóvenes Americanos
tiene la tendencia de suscribir a una fe que él llama Deísmo Moral Terapéutico.
El dogma del Deísmo Moral Terapéutico es este: “Dios puede ser invocado para asegurar y resolver crisis.
El ser bueno, buena gente, y justo asegura la salvación eterna en el cielo.”
Básicamente esta forma de pensamiento reduce la creencia y práctica religiosa a una serie de principios
sentimentales y afirmantes sin un sentido de la presencia y transcendencia, personal, y transformante de Dios.
Es una fe mediocre, una forma de pensar estrecha, y solitaria. No requiere la grandeza del alma. Y no engendra
ninguna virtud, ninguna caridad, y ningún heroísmo. Esto encaja bien con la Iglesia “buena gente” sobre lo que
escribí en el boletín de la semana pasada, pero está muy lejos de la realidad de la Iglesia ya que la Iglesia se
entiende a sí misma en relación a Jesucristo.
Más bien estoy compartiendo los pensamientos de James Conley de su comentario sobre la investigación
acerca de los jóvenes Americanos como Deístas Morales Terapéuticos. Conley escribe, “la Cristiandad no es
mediocre. Es una fe de grandeza inmerecida – la fe de virtud heroica, esperanza insuperada, y caridad ilimitada.
La vida Cristiana eleva a la humanidad en el gran proceso santificador de ser transformado a la mera semejanza
a Dios.” Esto significa que tenemos la capacidad de ser transformados a la belleza de Dios. Esto significa que
tenemos la capacidad de amar como Dios ama. Esto significa que tenemos la capacidad de pensar como Dios
piensa, de ver como Dios ve, de sentir como Dios siente, de tocar como Dios toca. Por supuesto que esto es sólo
posible hasta el punto que permitimos que Jesús reproduzca Su vida en nosotros.
Me pongo a pensar si esto no es lo que más tememos en la relación con Dios. Tememos la pérdida de
nosotros mismos. Pero recordamos que Jesús dijo, “Si se pierden a sí mismos se encontrarán.” Sólo
encontrando a Dios es como nos encontramos a nosotros mismos. Para que esto suceda debemos arrojarnos a
la historia del evangelio y encontrarnos a nosotros mismos en las vidas de aquellos hombres y mujeres quienes al
encontrar a Jesús se encontraron a sí mismos. Algo dramático sucedió de lo cual tuvieron el valor y la alegría de
ir hacia sus muertes como mártires por la fe y en vez de negar a Jesús. Como a menudo les recuerdo, la historia
del evangelio es perpetuada por toda la historia – la misma historia – sólo cambian los personajes. Nosotros
somos el pueblo que el Señor desea escribir en Su historia hoy y para siempre. Los Santos son los testigos de la
historia del poder y presencia duradera de Dios por toda la historia. La historia necesita hoy nuestra respuesta.
El bien-estar del futuro depende más que nada en nuestra voluntad de entrar a la historia y dejar una marca por
amor a Dios y por amor a su creación.
Los invito a que seriamente consideren participar del Triduo Santo. El Triduo Santo es la celebración
litúrgica de tres días que nos lleva de la Cuaresma hacia la temporada de la Pascua. Esto es el recordatorio y el
revivir de una historia que está al corazón de nuestra fe. Esta es la historia que nos llama a la aventura ardua de
la vida, llevando a la muerta la mediocridad, el pensamiento estrecho, y la soledad. Nuestra historia se trata del
misticismo – el misterio de Dios en el cual no se escatimó a sí mismo de nada para comunicar el amor
incomprensible que Él tiene para cada uno de nosotros – Dios cuyo deseo más grande es llevar a cada uno de
nosotros hacia la Divinidad de Dios. Tal experiencia nos deja transformados para siempre y para siempre en
camino hacia adelante. Arrojémonos a la historia para que sea escrita con más profundidad en la consciencia de
un mundo cuya salvación descansa sólo en la vida, sufrimiento, muerte, y resurrección de Jesucristo.

Nostras Voces Concert by Composer William Neil
On Saturday April 11, 2015 we will have the premier
performance of Nostras Voces, an original musical work
by composer William Neil dedicated to the history and
current mission of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Mark
your calendars for this important event in the life of this
parish. Each individual adult ticket is $25, for parents
with their small children it is $40, and for High School and
College students it is $10. Tickets are available in the

Semana Santa el sábado 4 de abril no habrá
