The Power of Prayer and Ritual Inside Our Helplessness
In the movie based upon Jane Austen’s classic novel, Sense and
Sensibility, there’s a very poignant scene where one of her young
heroines, suffering from acute pneumonia, is lying in bed hovering
between life and death. A young man, very much in love with her,
is pacing back and forth, highly agitated, frustrated by his
helplessness to do anything of use, and literally jumping out of his
skin. Unable to contain his agitation any longer, he goes to the
girl’s mother and asks what he might do to be helpful. She replies
that there’s nothing he can do, the situation is beyond them.
Unable to live with that response her says to her: “Give me some
task to do, or I shall go mad!”
We’ve all had the feeling at times when in the face of a dire
situation we need to do something, but there’s nothing we can
do, no magic wand we can wave to make things better.
But there is something we can do.
I recall an event in my own life several years ago: I was teaching
summer school in Belgium when, late one evening, just as I was
getting ready for bed, I received an email that a two friends of
mine, a man and a woman recently engaged, had been involved
that day in a fatal car accident. He was killed instantly and she was
in serious condition in hospital. I was living by myself in a
university dorm, thousands of miles from where this all
happened, and thousands of miles from anyone with whom I
could share this sorrow. Alone, agitated, panicked, and
desperately needing to do something but being absolutely
helpless to do anything, I was literally driven to my knees. Not
being able to do anything else, I picked up the prayer-book that
contains the Office of the Church and prayed, by myself, the
Vespers prayer for the dead. When I’d finished, my sorrow hadn’t
gone away, my friend was still dead, but my panic had subsided,
as had my desperate need to do something (when there was
nothing I could do).
El Poder de la Oración y del Ritual en Nuestra Impotencia
En la película basada en la clásica novela de Jane Austen
Sentido y sensibilidad, hay una escena muy conmovedora
donde una de sus jóvenes heroínas, sufría de neumonía
aguda, yace en cama debatiéndose entre la vida y la muerte.
Un joven, muy enamorado de ella, está paseando de acá
para allá, muy agitado, frustrado por no poder hacer algo
por útil por ella. Sin poder contener su agitación por más
tiempo, se acerca a la madre de la chica y le pregunta en
qué podría ayudar. Ella responde que no hay nada que
pueda hacer, esta fuera de nuestra manos. Incapaz de vivir
con esa respuesta, le dice a ella: “Dame algo para hacer,
sino me volveré loco”.
Todos nosotros hemos tenido a veces este sentimiento
cuando, ante una situación extrema, necesitamos hacer
algo, pero no hay nada con que podamos ayudar, ninguna
varita mágica que podamos agitar para mejorar las cosas.
Pero hay algo que podemos hacer.
Recuerdo un suceso en mi propia vida hace varios años:
Estaba yo enseñando en una escuela de verano en Bélgica
cuando, a última hora de la noche, exactamente cuando
estaba a punto de acostarme, recibí un email donde dos
amigos míos, un hombre y una mujer recientemente
comprometidos, habían tenido un fatal accidente de coche,
ese día. Él murió instantáneamente y ella estaba en graves

My prayer that night gave me some sense that the young man
who’d died that day was alright, safe somewhere in a place
beyond us, and it also relieved me of the agitation and
panicked pressure of needing to do something in the face of
agitated helplessness. I’d done the only thing I could do, the
thing that’s been done in the face of helplessness and death
since the beginning of time; I’d given myself over to prayer and
to the rituals of the community and the faith of the
community.
Sadly, today, we are a culture that for the most part is ritually
tone-deaf. We don’t understand ritual and therefore mostly
don’t know what to do when we need to be doing something
but we don’t know what to do. It’s these, prayer and ritual,
which we have at our disposal at those times when, like the
man in Sense and Sensibility, we need to do something or we
will go mad. That’s not only true for heavy, sorrowful times
when loved ones are sick or dying or killed in accidents and we
need to do something but there’s nothing we can do. We also
need ritual to help us celebrate happy times properly. What
should we do when our own children are getting married?
Among other things, we need to celebrate the ritual of
marriage because no wedding planner in the world can do for
us what the ritual, especially the church-ritual, of marriage can
do. Weddings, just like funerals, are a prime example of where
we need ritual to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
Sadly, today, we are a culture that for the most part is ritually
tone-deaf. We don’t understand ritual and therefore mostly
don’t know what to do when we need to be doing something
but we don’t know what to do. That’s a fault, a painful poverty,
in our understanding.
The Trappist monks who were martyred in Algeria in 1996
were first visited by the Islamic extremists who would later
kidnap and kill them, on Christmas Eve, just as they were
preparing to celebrate Christmas Mass. After some initial
threats, their eventual murderers left. The monks were badly
shaken. They huddled together as a group for a time to digest
what had just happened. Then, not knowing what else to do in
the face of this threat and their fear, they sang the Christmas
Mass. In the words of their Abbott: “It’s what we had to do. It’s
all we could do! It was the right thing.” He shared too, as did a
number of the other monks (in their diaries) that they found
this, celebrating the ritual of Mass in the face of their fear and
panic, something that calmed their fear and brought some
steadiness and regularity back into their lives.

Aquella noche, mi oración me dio la sensación de que el joven
que había muerto ese día estaba bien, a salvo de alguna
manera en un lugar más allá de nosotros, y eso también me
liberó de la desesperación y el pánico de hacer algo ante la
desesperada impotencia. Había hecho la única cosa que podía
hacer, lo que se ha hecho ante la impotencia y muerte desde el

momentos felices.
¿Qué deberíamos hacer cuando nuestros propios hijos se
casan? Entre otras cosas, necesitamos celebrar el ritual del
matrimonio, porque ninguno que proyecte una boda en el
mundo puede hacer por nosotros lo que el ritual de la boda especialmente el ritual eclesiástico- puede hacer. Las bodas, al
igual que los funerales, son un primer ejemplo de dónde
necesitamos el ritual para hacer por nosotros lo que no
podemos hacer por nosotros mismos.
Tristemente, hoy, vivimos una cultura que en su mayoría es
ritualmente sin oído. No entendemos el ritual y, por lo tanto, la

There’s a lesson to be learned here, one that can bring
steadiness and calm into our lives at those times when we
desperately need to do something, but there’s nothing to do.
Hay una lección que aprender aquí, lección que puede traer
firmeza y calma a nuestras vidas en esos momentos en los que
necesitamos desesperadamente hacer algo pero no hay nada
que hacer.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
World Youth Day in Krakow: “Blessed are the merciful, for
they will be shown mercy”
This week, the universal Church focuses in prayerful solidarity
on World Youth Day in Krakow, where WYD’s founder, Saint
John Paul II, served as archbishop. Its theme coincides with
that of Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy: “Blessed are the
merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Today’s
Gospel echoes the same theme, as Jesus unites prayer with
mercy in “The parable of the persistent friend.” Jesus teaches
us not only what words to pray, but what deeds must match
authentic prayer. How beautifully down-to-earth is Jesus’
portrait of a God who can be trusted to do what is best for us.
A pesky neighbor disturbs a sleeping friend and disrupts the
household. Yet beautiful images unfold. Persevering prayer
receives active, practical mercy in loaves of bread, recalling
Luke’s unique expression for the Eucharist, “the breaking of
bread” (Luke 24:35; Acts 2:42). WYD, the Jubilee, and Jesus
thus unite to define perfect prayer as persevering communion
with God and unconditional mercy toward our neighbor.
Jornada Mundial de la Juventud Cracovia, “Bienaventurados
los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia”
Esta semana la Iglesia universal se encamina solidariamente en
oración hacia la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud a realizarse en
Cracovia, la ciudad donde fue arzobispo san Juan Pablo II el
fundador de este evento mundial para jóvenes. El tema de este
año de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud coincide con el del
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia: “Bienaventurados los
misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia” (Mateo
5:7) El Evangelio de hoy hace eco al mismo tema, como Jesús
une la oración con la misericordia en “la parábola del Amigo
Persistente”. Jesús nos enseña además de las palabras para
orar, aquellas acciones que deben coincidir con una autentica
oración. Que hermosa es la imagen que Jesús presenta de Dios
en quien se puede confiar hacer aquello que es lo mejor para
nosotros. Un vecino inoportuno que va a despertar a su amigo
e irrumpe en su casa. Aún así surgen bellas imágenes. La
oración perseverante tiene una respuesta activa, recibe
misericordia en panes; recordando de Lucas la única referencia
a la Eucaristía “al partir el pan” (Lucas 24:35, Hechos 2:42). La

Mr. James Lachance is Music Director for
Catholic Services at Bryant University,
Smithfield, RI and Co-Director of Music
and Liturgy at Mary Mother of Mankind,
North Providence, RI where he plans
music for masses and special liturgy,
plays for funerals and weddings, and
directs the young adult choir.
Sr. James Lachance es director musical de los
Servicios Católicos de la Universidad de Bryant,
Smithfield, RI y Co-Director de Música y Liturgia
en María Madre de la Humanidad, en North
Providence, RI donde organiza música para las
Misas y liturgias especial, toca para los
funerales y matrimonios y dirige el coro de
adultos jóvenes.
Mr. Lachance earned a Bachelor of Music
History degree from Rhode Island College
where he majored in voice with
concentrated studies in organ. He is an
inducted member of the National Society
of Leadership and Success, RI Chapter.
James mentored young students at the
Henry Barnard Laboratory School during
his time on the RIC Campus. He
also earned an Associate Degree
in Business Management.

Conception Church, Cranston, RI, St. Timothy Parish, Warwick,
RI, St. Vincent de Paul, Coventry, RI, Ss. Peter and Paul, West
Warwick RI and St. Elizabeth, Bristol, RI.

trumpet. James is an avid tennis player rated 3.5 by USTA.
James is looking forward to serving the Blessed Sacrament
Catholic Community as a music director planning for weekend
Masses, special liturgies, directing choirs, assisting with the
development of music in the school, and providing music at
weddings and funerals.
James es el más grande de cuatro hijos de Diana y Philip
Lachance de Cranston, RI. Comenzó sus estudios de música a la
temprana edad de 7 años con su abuela y mentor, Evelyn

Family Based Religious Education (FBRE) is a faith formation
program for Kindergarten through 8th grade children and
adults that provides the opportunity for parents/guardians
and children to learn about their faith together and grow in
relationship with Jesus as a family, the “domestic church.”
Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and
Eucharist are also coordinated through this program.
Registration forms for the 2016-17 program are available in
the gathering space at church on the table under the quilt or
on the website under the drop down menu “Faith Formation >
Faith Formation Registration.”

In the Diocese of Raleigh, preparation for the sacrament of

Confirmation is a two-year program that begins in high school.

the Holy Spirit, and what it means to be a confirmed member
of the Catholic Church.
The first Year One session will be Sunday, September 25th the
first Year Two session will be on Sunday, October 2nd.
All sessions will be from 6:00-8:00PM in the gathering space at
the church unless otherwise noted. The cost is $75 per year,
per person.
You may pay by cash or check. Registration forms are available
on the parish website, in the parish office, and in the gathering

News from the Boy Scout Troop 9
Congratulations to Andrew, Gavin, Elliott, and Jackson on a
successful Scout Summer Camp. They all accomplished a lot with
their training and had a lot of fun swimming, hiking, shooting,
and working in the metal shop, on their six days outdoors
exciting experience. The Scouts are also advised to practice
some of the Scout Laws that had learned at home.
A Scout is HELPFUL around the house.
Be FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS, and KIND.
OBEDIENT to Parents and COOPERATE with the running of the
household.

School Improvements!
With the guidance and assistance of Fr. Paul your Parish school has undergone
many notable updates this summer. New lights on both the first and second
floors have added much needed additional lighting in our hallways. New lights
will be installed in the multipurpose room by the end of the summer.
A new color palate was established for our classrooms and several
classrooms received a fresh coat of paint. Remaining classrooms will be
painted over the next few summers.
The multipurpose room is also receiving a fresh coat of paint along
with updates banners and wall vinyl logo.
