From the Pastor’s Heart and Desk:
Del Escritorio y Corazón del Pastor:
~~~~ For generations the Quakers
refused to follow our legal system’s
requirement that witnesses in court
must place their hand upon a bible
and “swear to tell the truth, the
whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
They were criticized, and ridiculed and, in
some cases, incarcerated for their refusal
to take an oath. But because they have
gained the reputation of being honest people, they are, in some courts, no longer required to swear on the bible. They are
known as truth-tellers. Perhaps the old
joke that we have told for generations is
not just funny but also true. Lena says to
her husband, “Ole, why don’t you tell me
you love me anymore?” And Ole replies, “I
told you fifty years ago that I loved you,
and if that ever changes, I’ll let you know.”
Even Ole was a truth-teller.
~~~~ When Leonardo da Vinci was working
on his painting, “The Last Supper,” he became angry with a certain man. Losing his
temper he lashed the man with bitter
words and threats. Returning to his canvas,
he attempted to work on the face of Jesus,
but was unable to do so. Finally, he put
down his brush, sought out the man, and
asked his forgiveness. The man accepted
his apology and Leonardo was able to return to his workshop and finish painting
the face of Jesus.
~~~~ At the death of Nikita Khrushchev,
the former leader of the Soviet Union
many years ago, a humorous story circulated in political circles. The Communist party that had cast Mr. Khrushchev aside was
uncomfortable with the idea of burying his
body on Soviet soil. They first called the
President of the United States, Richard Nixon, and asked if the U.S. would take
Khrushchev’s corpse. Nixon had his own
problems at the time and declined. Then
the Soviet leaders tried Golda Meir, Prime
Minister of Israel. Mrs. Meir was agreeable
but she added, “I must warn you that this
country has the world’s highest resurrection rate. Well, she was right - Israel does
… continued on page 5
~~~~ Por generaciones, los Quakers
~~~~ Cuando Leonardo Da Vinci estaba trabajando en su pintura "La Ultima Cena ", el
estuvo disgustado con cierto hombre. Perdiendo la compostura el trató al hombre con
palabras duras y amenazas. Regresando a
su canvas, el trató de trabajar en el rostro de
Jesús, pero no pudo hacerlo. Finalamente el
dejó su brocha, buscó al hombre y le pidió
perdón. El hombre aceptó la disculpa y Leonardo pudo regresar a su estudio y pintar el
rostro de Jesús.
~~~~ A la muerte de Nikita Khrushchev, el
