PASTOR’S CORNER
THE MEANING OF THE MASS – “The 2nd Reading is
always taken from one of the letters of the apostles. Jesus may
be said to be a new center of the history of Israel, but his own
life itself has a center. The Gospels and the apostolic letters
lead us clearly toward this center: His death and Resurrection!
The apostles provide us with penetrating reflections on the
center. This is theology, the reflective effort of the first believers to absorb all that had been experienced in the death and
Resurrection of Jesus. They unfold its consequences, showing
in various ways that the believer is summoned to an unimaginably profound sharing in the Lord’s Passion and so in his
victory. As the reader says, “the Word of the Lord,” we express our amazement and gratitude as we respond, “Thanks be
to God.” The apostolic testimony is undergirded by the power
of the Holy Spirit. We encounter the risen Lord through their
witness.” (from What Happens At Mass by Jeremy Driscoll,
OSB). But do I encounter the risen Lord when I listen to the
second reading at Mass? I confess that because of distraction,
or a lack of expectant faith, I oftentimes do not. What about
you? How can we improve our encounter or lack thereof?
Having a personal encounter with Jesus in the Liturgy of the
Word and in the Liturgy of the Eucharist is at the heart of
what the Mass is all about. Jesus is ready to encounter me/us.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock (Rev. 3:20). Let us
dare to believe this Good News and actively keep seeking,
asking and opening the door so that our share in Jesus’ Passion and so in his victory may deepen week after week.
Blessings, Fr. John

NEXT SUNDAY 2ND COLLECTION FOR OUR FAITH,
OUR FAMILY, OUR FUTURE CAMPAIGN
PRAY FOR THOSE WHO RECENTLY DIED
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the
mercy of God, rest in peace: Jose “Mike” Martinez,
Dolores Saunders, Mirella Batista
Ash Wednesday is February 18. Lent is the season of
fasting, almsgiving and self-denial. Without prayer in our
Lenten practices fasting and almsgiving are merely actions. Prayer is our conversation with God and it is
through those conversations that we gain the strength for
fasting and self-denial. Through prayer we develop a
closer, intimate relationship with God. Stop by the
bookstore to find that daily meditation book that will enrich your Lenten journey. The bookstore will be open
Sunday, February 8 and Sunday, February 22, 7:30 am to
2 pm and 4:30 to 8:30 p.m..

(del libro What Happens At Mass de Jeremy Driscoll,
“He aquí, yo estoy
