We all need hope. When we closely examine ourselves, we tend to get discouraged
and lose heart. Mostly, thanks to our foolish mistakes and some bad judgment?
The “push button” environment in which we live today tends to remove our support
systems. It is easy start feeling down and often get depressed. With eyes of faith
focused on the promises of Jesus, there is every reason for hope and healing. That’s
what this parish Abba Lenten Mission is all about. ABBA means Father. We come
to the Lord for His Love, comfort, compassion and healing.
Father Jets Medina who is a marvelous preacher will be with us for down to earth
preaching. He is a “tell it like it is Priest”, one of the finest Preachers in Southeastern
Florida. A Magnificent Priest of the Lord. Fr. Jets is the Chaplain at Archbishop
Coleman Carroll High School in Miami.
On Monday night, Spiritual life is spiritual sensitivity to the Lord’s presence. Our season of Lent gives us many
opportunities to grow in openness to God.
On Tuesday night, Father Jets, as Jesus does, knows the pain of our sufferings. He has great love and compassion
for our illnesses and poor and hurting people. A time for forgiveness and thanksgiving. Several priests will be here
for individual Confessions after he preaches.
On Wednesday night, Father Jets will celebrate a Healing Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
included. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is there for anyone ill, going into the hospital for tests or
surgery, or suffering from depression, and a multitude of ailments that you may unfortunately be suffering from.
“Come and be anointed by the holy oil and God’s healing prayers in this blessed sacrament.”

need. We ask that families take advantage of the
BOGO (buy one get one) offers at the local
supermarkets, and donate the second item to
the St. Louis Food Pantry. They can be dropped
off in the bins located in the vestibule of the
church. We will then collect them and store them
for others that come to the parish office in need
of food. What a great way to help our neighbors
and set an example to those around us to do the
same!

Only One Hour
St. Francis Xavier Cabrini was born in Italy yet was the first American citizen to become a Saint.
She started a missionary order in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to care for the poor in hospitals and schools.
When she arrived in New York City in 1889 without even a place to stay with her small number of sisters, they
made several Holy Hours of Adoration before the Sacred Eucharistic Heart of Jesus every day despite their very
demanding schedule. She said: “Pray always with Jesus, always remembering that a soul united with Him can do
everything. At the time of her death in 1917, she had more than four thousand sisters and
over fifty houses in addition to many orphanages, schools and hospitals worldwide.

Festival For The Poor 2015
Wow! Here we are in mid- January and our annual Festival for the Poor is “just
around the corner”. This year’s Festival is actually spread over 3 weekends so
everyone will have the opportunity to participate in all of the events!
There will be volunteers in the Rotunda after the Masses the next 2 weekends selling all
the “necessary” items your family will need to have memorable and fun-filled times at the
Festival. We are selling 2015 Festival t- shirts, raffle tickets, Friday Night Under the Big Top
Dinner Tickets and Ride Bracelets. We also have sponsorship applications at the tables
(ranging from $150 for a booth to $5,000 Platinum Sponsorship.) We have several booth
and ride sponsorships still available. Consider your family sponsoring a booth or having
one in honor of your children or in memory of a loved one. Professionally made recognition
signage will be posted on the booths/rides/ stage as well as being displayed throughout the
event on the Sponsorship Board in the Church, the bulletin and the Event Stage. Please ask
your employer or the owner of a company or retail business you are familiar with to consider
a sponsorship to assist us to make this the most successful Festival ever! Silent Auction
items can STILL be donated and left at the Church Office. The more we offset our costs, the
more we will be able to give to our brothers and sisters in need.

More Than Following Rules

We have many children again this year
receiving First Communion. As a part
of their sacramental program, they
also go to confession and celebrate the
sacrament of reconciliation. By the age of
seven years and older, they have a sense
of moral responsibility, right and wrong.
They, like all of us in preparation for First
Confession, learned lists of rules outlining
moral values. From the Old Testament we can study the Ten
Commandments handed on from God through Moses, as we
hear in this weekend’s first reading at Mass from Exodus 20:117. Or we can reflect on the two great commandments of love
that Jesus teaches in the New Testament, love of God and
love of neighbor (Matthew 22: 34-40). But Christian morality
means more than just following a list of rules. Our morality
as disciples flows from the Covenant, our relationship in Christ
with God and others.
Throughout our Lenten readings we hear about the concept of
“covenant”– it underlies the meaning of the scriptures. “Old
Testament” really means “old covenant,” including the first
covenants with humanity and with the people of Israel; just
as “New Testament” refers to the “new and eternal covenant”
we have through Jesus Christ. First Sunday of Lent recalled
the story of Noah and God’s covenant with humanity. On
the Second Sunday of Lent, we heard about Israel’s covenant
through the stories of Abraham, Moses and Elijah. Today,
the Third Sunday of Lent, we listen to the Exodus account of
the Ten Commandments that flow from the Israel’s covenant
(Exodus 20:1-17.) For Christians Jesus embodies the New
Covenant; he is our relationship with God and with each other.
Sin means breaking the covenant, breaking the relationship
God has established with us and with each other. The “ten”
commandments or the “two” commandments simply outline
how the relationship should be lived. Commandments are not
arbitrary rules, hoops God decided to make us jump through.
Commandments flesh out the covenant: you cannot kill, steal,
lie, commit adultery, you must love, etc., if you really live out
the relationship. Sin breaks our covenant relationships, not
just rules. “I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no
longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh,
I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given
himself up for me” (Galatians 2:19-20). Morality means living
in Christ.
All of us are keenly aware of how we do not always live
that life in Christ. Over the next few weeks, we have many
opportunities to go to confession and celebrate the sacrament
of reconciliation: Spanish Penance Service (Tuesday, March 3),
English Penance Service (Tuesday, March 24), Reconciliation
Weekend (Friday- Saturday, March 27-28), in addition to our
usually scheduled Saturday confessions, or by appointment
with one of our priests. St. Paul challenged us all on Ash
Wednesday: “Be reconciled with God” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
Una vez más tenemos muchos niños para recibir la Primera
Comunión. Como parte de su programa sacramental, ellos
también deben hacer la confesión y celebrar el Sacramento
de la Reconciliación. A la edad de siete años o mayores,
ya tienen un sentido de responsabilidad moral, bueno y
malo. Ellos, como todos nosotros, en preparación para su
Primera Confesión, aprenden una lista de reglas que delínean
los valores morales. Del Antiguo Testamento podemos
estudiar los Diez Mandamientos que Dios le dio a Moisés,
como escuchamos en la Misa de éste domingo en la primera
lectura del Exodo 20: 1-17. O podemos reflexionar en los dos
grandes mandamientos de amor que Jesús nos enseña en el
Nuevo Testamento, amar a Dios y amar a nuestro prójimo
(Mateo 22; 34-40). Pero la moral cristiana es mucho más que
seguir la reglas. Nuestra moralidad como discípulos fluye del
Convenio, nuestra relación en Cristo con Dios y los demás.
A través de nuestras lecturas de Cuaresma escuchamos sobre
el concepto del “convenio” - que subraya el significado de
las escrituras. “El Antiguo Testamento” realmente significa
“antiguo convenio,” incluyendo el primer convenio con la
humanidad y con el pueblo de Israel; así como el “Nuevo
Testamento” se refiere al “nuevo y eterno convenio” que
tenemos a través de Jesucristo. El Primer Domingo de
Cuaresma relata la historia de Noé y el convenio de Dios
con la humaniad. En el Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma,
escuchamos sobre el convenio de Israel a través de las historias
de Abraham, Moisés y Elías. Hoy, el Tercer Domingo de
Cuaresma escuchamos el recuento de los Diez Mandamientos
que fluyen del convenio de Israel (Exodo 20: 1-17). Para los
Cristianos, Jesús encarna el Nuevo Convenio; él es nuestra
relación con Dios y con nuestros semejantes.
Pecado significa romper ese convenio, romper la relación
que Dios había establecido con nosotros y con los demás.
Los “diez” mandamientos o los “dos” mandamientos
simplemente delíenean como la relación debe ser vivida. Los
mandamientos no son reglas arbitrarias, Dios no nos hace
brincar. Los mandamientos dan cuerpo al convenio; usted
no puede matar, robar, mentir, cometer adulterio, usted debe
amar, etc., si usted realmente vive la relación. El pecado
rompe nuestra relación con el convenio, no sólo las reglas.
“He quedado crucificado con Cristo, y ya no vivo yo, sino que
Cristo vive en mi (Gálatas 2:19-20). Moralidad significa vivir
en Cristo.
Todos nosotros sabemos en profundidad que siempre
vivimos la vida como Cristo nos enseñó. En las próximas
semana tendremos varias oportunidades de ir a confesarnos
y de celebrar el Sacramento de la Reconciliación. El Servicio
de Penitencia en Español (martes 3 de marzo), Servicio de
Penitencia en Ingles (martes 24 de marzo). Fin de Semana de
Reconciliación (viernes y sábado, 27-28 de marzo), además
de nuestra agenda regular de confesiones los sábados, o por
sita previa con uno de nuestros sacerdotes. El Miércoles de
Ceniza, San Pablo nos reta diciendo: “Déjense reconciliar con
Dios”(2 Corintios 5: 20).
