MARRIAGE: Appointment with Pastor at least NINE months in advance. CLERGY Rev. Hieu Trong Nguyen, S.V.D Pastor 951-272-3523 Re lectingonGod’sWord They were men in love with the lights of night—astrologers, star-gazers, meaningmakers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Ma hew tells it. A strange star moving across the sky led them into Israel. Arriving in Jerusalem, they asked where the newborn king of the Jews was, so they could offer homage. Herod was less than delighted, indeed “greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,” at hearing of a new king on the block (Ma hew 2:3). But he assembled the chief priests and the scribes, who remembered that the prophet Micah had proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. So they set out again, with Herod’s duplicitous request whispered into their ears. The star reappeared and led them to the house where the child and his mother were. Falling down in worship, they offered gi s, and went back home. End of story—as we like to remember it. Of course, that is not the end. Receiving no word, Herod is enraged and orders the death of all children under the age of two. Joseph, Mary, and the child flee to Egypt. Power does not welcome compe on, even in the form of a child. But God wills all people to know salva on. Jesus came to draw all into the reign of God and to empower them to live the God-life that is the Father’s gi . The darkness of evil con nues to threaten but it will not overcome as long as there are those who seek the light, follow it, and allow it to lead them to the child. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. PASTOR’S COLUMN Who is the Fourth Wise Man? The Feast of the Epiphany reminds me of the story of the Fourth Wise man. This story touches my heart because its meaning is very profound and motivates my personal dedication to God and God’s people. Now I would like to share this new version of this story with you. Once upon a time, three kings came out of a distant land and followed a star across the desert. You may know them as the Wise Men, or perhaps the magi-bearers of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for a newborn child. The star led them to a rural area of Bethlehem so they could meet the new born Jesus. They were surprise as they saw Jesus being born in a simple manger and in a tough – cold condition of the winter. They offered their gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus, and then returned home with happiness and joy. Beside these three kings or wise men, a poor widow also saw the star. Due to her holiness and faithfulness to God, she recognized the star as a sign that leads her to the baby Jesus. She yearningly thought on going to see Jesus, but many questions appeared in her mind. Do I have enough energy to make that Journey due to the fact that I am old and weak? What can I offer to Jesus as my gift? She was losing her motivation to make the Journey at first, but after a period of pondering, she realized the significance of coming and seeing Jesus. She put all of her worrisome aside, and then decided to make the journey. The poor widow began to set out on the long and difficult journey. She brought a walker, loaf of bread, bottle of water, lighter, candle, and all of her money along with her. She thought that she could use the walker to support her for a long distance of walking. She needed water and bread as her food. She intended to offer to Jesus the lighter and candle so the fire flame would bring light and keep Jesus warm. She also wanted to offer her money to Jesus so that Mary could buy clothes for him. However the reality of her Journey happened differently from what she expected. Along the way of looking for Jesus, she compassionately gave all things she had to the unfortunate. She gave her walker to a stranger who had a broken leg. She gave away her water, bread, lighter and candle to a beggar who was hungry, thirsty and cold. She also gave her money to a woman who needed money for her little daughter’s cancer treatment. Finally, the star disappeared, and she saw Mary and Joseph from afar. She was very happy because her dream of seeing Jesus face to face was about to happen. She suddenly wondered, “Oh, I have nothing left to offer to Jesus because I have already given all things of mine to the poor. Am I worthy to approach him and greet him? What can I say to him?” After several minutes of discerning, she took courage to come to Jesus face to face. She said to Jesus, “Oh, Jesus, my Lord, I am very happy to see you. A re you cold, hungry and thirsty? I arrived too late and empty-handed.” The Baby Jesus looked at her with a beautiful smile. She could feel the voice of God from deepest heart, sayings, “you gave me the most significant gift that is your whole beings. You shared with me all that you have had. You are worthy to receive my grace because you have truly practiced my teachings… For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. I now heal you and give you strength so that you can continue to share my love, care and hope to your unfortunate brothers and sisters.” (MT 25:35-36). Then she returned home with great joy because she was transformed by God. God’s grace was a source of her strength that helped her overcome her bad circumstances. The meaning of this story is an important message for each one of us. Each of us can be the fourth wise person who is searching and approaching God, so that our God, Jesus Christ can shower his love and grace upon each of us. God is always calling us to come to him, but what are our responses? Do we have courage and sacrifices to make “our own tough journey”, the journey of faith? If we completely trust in God and have desire to see God, we can experience God’s presence in the midst of our brokenness and recognize God’s love and grace in our lives. We also need to express our generosity toward others by witnessing God’s love and care to others. As the Fourth Wise Woman, we accompany those who are in need to fulfill our spiritual journey together so that we all encounter God and be blessed by God. As we discover God in our lives, we are invited to be ‘The Star’ that leads others to God. May all of us encounter the Baby Jesus, our Lord as we are celebrating the Christmas Season. May each of us be ‘The Star’ that leads others to God’s banquet of love.
