September 13, 2015 Page 2 PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Ligouri Publications and wanted to share it with you. TURNING LOOSE WHAT WE THINK IS IMPORTANT Anyone else dislike difficult conversations? I’m just not a fan. Every so often my husband and I sit at the kitchen table and talk about money, scheduling issues, or children’s discipline. While these marriage-business meetings aren’t the worst things in the world, I’d much rather we were out on a date or watching TV than discussing serious and sometimes contentious topics. As necessary as these meetings are to a successful and communicative union, I’d prefer to avoid them altogether. Perhaps that is why I identify so strongly with Peter in today’s Gospel. When Jesus initiates the difficult conversation about His own suffering and death, Peter doesn’t want to hear it. He loves Jesus and can’t possibly imagine Him suffering and dying. So of course he protests – but as we know Jesus will have none of it. He harshly rebukes Peter, “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Human beings hold tightly to life and avoid suffering and pain. But Jesus reveals God’s outlook on the matter – that those who lose their lives for God’s sake will save them. To “lose” our lives begins with turning “loose” what we think is important. Releasing our firm hold on money, career plans, certainties, independence, and even actual physical life will actually open us to the deeper new life – including eternal life – God promises. It’s no easy task. It’s like engaging in a difficult conversation. But God patiently waits for us to sit down at the table, ready to help us lose our lives just a little more each day. Question for Reflection: What in your life have you lost for Jesus’ sake? Are there any other areas that you can turn loose? From the Heart Blue Mass - Thank you very much for joining us in celebrating our Blue mass. We were also deeply blessed to have with us our city officials, police officers, firefighters, and first responders. Thank you, Mrs. Aguilar and our school for joining us and serving in the mass. We enjoyed your awesome presentation by the Drum Corp (trained by Mr. Brian Miller) to honor our guests. Thank you to our school parents who served food to our guests, to Rev. Jackson Fong and his beloved wife, Michelle, of the First Baptist Church, to Rabbi Daniel Mehlman, and to our dear neighbor, Fr. John Higgins, thank you for gracing our event with your valuable presence. Prayer for The World Meeting of Families - My dear families, please pray the powerful prayer on page 3 so that every family will be always united in Jesus. Please pray for all the struggling families. The OLPH Community is invited to join the novena to San Lorenzo Ruiz on Tuesday, September 15, at 7pm at St. Dominic Savio Church, 13400 Bellflower Blvd, Bellflower. Our community will lead the people in praying to this great Filipino martyr whose feast is on September 28. Part of the prayer will be the Holy Rosary. A mass in honor of San Lorenzo Ruiz will be celebrated also at St. Dominic Savio Church on Saturday, September 19, at 5:30pm. Please join the Filipino Community in planning for Simbang Gabi on Saturday, September 26, at 6:45pm in the Parish Center. Let us pray that all of us especially our representatives will speak up for life and say "No" to Assisted Suicide bill. Let us also pray that refugees from war torn countries will find comfort, safety, and shelter. Prayers and blessings, Fr. Joseph Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time LITURGY ENHANCEMENTS As fall begins and as we say goodbye to summer, it is a good time to make some liturgical enhancements for the fall period of Ordinary Time. Periodically and seasonally, we enhance our liturgical life in various ways. This season of Ordinary Time (September 13 onward), we will include the following enhancements: Penitential Rite: After the Greeting in the beginning of Mass, the priest leads us in an act of penance, asking for the forgiveness of sins. We are using, and will continue to use, the extended Penitential Rite. This option includes invocations that reflects the Gospel and the theme of the Liturgy. Service Music: Four years ago with the advent of the New Roman Missal, our Gloria and Mass parts (Holy, Holy; Memorial Acclamation; Lamb of God) were from the “Mass of Renewal II.” We will return to this Mass setting (the Yellow Cards) for the Fall. Creed: At every Mass we recite the Creed, whether the Apostle’s or the longer Nicene Creed. We do this, first of all, as a personal act of faith: “I believe in One God…” But it is also something that we share in common with the rest of the faithful. The Creed unites the faithful as One Church. We will return to reciting the Nicene Creed all the way until the beginning of Lent. Page 3 GRIEF HEALING JOURNEY Duration: When: Where: Time: 6 weeks Wednesday, September 23 OLPH Parish Center 6:45 pm - 9:00 pm Sessions are designed to help a person move from the darkness of grief into the light of a new beginning with renewed hope. Sessions will include an explanation of the stages of grief with prayer, scripture readings, and confidential sharing. The World Meeting of Families event was established by Pope St. John Paul II in 1994. It is held every three years in cities across the world. 2015 is the first time it will be in the United States. Its goals are (1) to strengthen family bonds and (2) to give witness to the fundamental role of the family in society. World Meeting of Families Prayer God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Learn more at WorldMeeting2015.org September 13, 2015 Page 4 SAN PEDRO REGIONAL CONGRESS Saturday, October 3 St. Joseph High School 5825 N. FAMILY CORNER BE RUTHLESS WITH SIN Mark 9:38-48 The disciples were jealous of an unfamiliar man who healed in Jesus’ name. It seemed that they were more concerned about losing the spotlight than in healing. Yet, we do the same thing when we refuse to participate in good works because the people are unfamiliar, those in charge don’t do things the way we’d like, or we fear our efforts won’t get recognized. Competitiveness and ego have no place in the Christian community. Jesus was very clear; we must be ruthless in removing sin from our lives. Giving up a relationship, job, or habit that keeps us from God may seem just a painful as cutting off a hand, but the consequences of our choices last forever. Being lukewarm toward Jesus is not possible. “For whoever is not against us is for us.” Not all of Jesus’ followers resemble each other or belong to the same groups. But all who are on Jesus’ side have the same goal to build up the kingdom of God. Our differences should never interfere with the work of the kingdom.
