Dear Friends,
January and February are
busy times here at St. Joseph’s. Let
me mention a few items on my
desk:
1. I am grateful for the organ
concert on last Saturday night; a
wonderful initiative of two parish ministries: the
music and arts committee and the Food pantry
for the poor, which benefitted from donations.
Great music; great mutual support. Thanks to
all who came.
2. Four important parish celebrations and events
are coming:
A. January 31, 7:00 Mass and feast in
Honor of the Image of Cristo Negro de
Esquipulas, patron of Guatemala.
B. February 2nd, the celebration of the
Presentation and Blessing of Children at
the 7:00 p.m. Mass
C. February 3, 7:00 Mass and reception in
Honor of Our Lady of Suyapa, patroness
of Honduras.
D. February 3, at all Masses the blessing of
throats on the Feast of St. Blaise.
3. On Tuesday Feb. 3rd and Friday Feb. 6th the
spiritual exercises program “Workshops in
Prayer and Life” begin again, in Spanish. Call
the office for details.
4. On the weekend of February 7 & 8 this year’s
Annual Appeal to support the charitable works
of our Archdiocese of Newark opens asking the
generosity of all of us.
And of course, so quickly we begin, along
with the universal Church, the season of Lent on

information on a “Retreat with Pope Francis” to be

Next weekend is the first weekend of February and we will

some families who ordinarily would not be able to send their
child/children to St. Joseph’s Grammar School. Thank you in

your parish.

St. Joseph’s Grammar School continues to
collect “Box Tops for Education” found
on General Mills cereal boxes and some
Betty Crocker baking products. We also use the labels for
Education from the Campbell Soup Company. So if you use
any of these products please send your box tops or labels in an
envelope in the collection basket. It couldn’t be easier and the
children of our grammar school will benefit.

In this season of thankfulness, we wish to announce a benefit
to honor the Franciscan Sisters who have served St. Joseph’s
parish for over 100 years. Please mark your calendars for
Saturday, April 18, 2015 to join us as we celebrate with the
Franciscan Sisters from Peekskill. More details to follow.
World Day for Consecrated Life
Since 1997, the universal Church has celebrated the World
Day for Consecrated Life close to the feast of the Presentation
of the Lord. On Sunday, February 1st, the Archdiocese will
observe this day with a special emphasis on the call to
consecrated life in today’s world. The consecrated life is one
way that men and women live out their baptismal
commitment as followers of Jesus. Some become members
of a religious congregation or a secular institute. Others
remain single and make a profession to God through the local
bishop and are known as consecrated virgins. We recognize
and give thanks for those who have consecrated their lives to
God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity,
and obedience.
Pope Francis has proclaimed this year as the Year of
Consecrated Life and it is in this light that Archbishop Myers
invites all the faithful to gather in celebration support and
thanksgiving on Sunday, February 1, 2015, at 12:00 Noon at
the Basilica Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ.
This invitation is extended in a special way to the members of
every parish as a means of participating in the Year of
Consecrated Life and to thank the consecrated men and
women of our Archdiocese for their selfless gift of service to
our local Church. In this Year of Consecrated Life, Pope
Francis calls us to look to the past with gratitude, to live the
present with passion and to embrace the future with hope.
Come celebrate with us as we gather in the spirit of that call!

Life website at

2015 Anniversary Liturgies
The Archdiocese is once again preparing the
annual tradition of honoring those couples who
will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty
years of Christian marriage in the year 2015.
These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Archbishop
John J. Myers in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
in Newark as follows:
April 19: 3 p.m.: 50 years (All Counties)
May 3: 3 p.m.: 25 years & 5 years (All Counties)
It is our desire that every couple in the Archdiocese
deserving of such recognition be present at the appropriate
liturgy. The presence of a large number of couples will give
favorable witness to the strength and stability of Christian
marriage in today’s society.
Parishioners interested in celebrating one of these
anniversaries are asked to call the Rectory to sign up.
January 24-25, 2015
Baby Items Available
Mothers in need of any baby items are encouraged to go to
the Lower Community Center, every second Saturday of the
month, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Baby items such as
clothing, cribs, car seats, etc., will be available for those who
may need them.
Stewardship Reflections
“Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” - Mark 1:17
Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! Jesus
asks us to help Him build his church on earth by generously
sharing all our gifts of prayer, talent and treasure. Remember,
Jesus calls us to generously develop and share all our gifts,
not just the ones we pick and choose.
