MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This
mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as
found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and
witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

“I AM”
Kindness and mercy are what the enslaved
people of Israel needed, and they came in the
form of deliverance. They came through a leader, Moses, who was once plucked from the Nile
River and was now herding his
father-inlaw’s sheep in the land of Goshen. The bush
that burned but was not consumed shows us that God is inexhaustible mystery.
Moses’ awe and deference are mixed with a touching conversational tone as he seeks to learn God’s name. And God sweetly
responds. The somewhat abstract “I AM” distinguishes the God of
Abraham and Isaac and Jacob from the minor gods in the territory
who “are not.” They are helpless, powerless, and useless. Moses is
to step out into an amazing future, and God will be there with outstretched arm. Just go and see, God seems to say.

“YO SOY”
Lo que el pueblo esclavizado de Israel
necesitaba era la bondad y misericordia de Dios,
y esas dos cosas llegaron bajo la forma de una
liberación. Llegaron por medio de un caudillo,
Moisés, que cuando niño fue salvado de las
aguas del Nilo, y ahora estaba pastoreando las
ovejas de su suegro en el desierto. La zarza que ardía sin consumirse nos muestra que Dios es un misterio inagotable.
El temor y respeto de Moisés están mezclados con una confianza
conmovedora, cuando trata de averiguar el Nombre del Señor. Y Dios
le responde dulcemente con un Nombre –YO SOY– que distingue al
Dios de Abraham, Isaac y Jacob de los diosecitos de las naciones,
que “no-son”. Esos diosecitos de nada son impotentes e inútiles. Moisés tiene que avanzar hacia un futuro increíble, y Dios lo espera allí
con mano poderosa y brazo extendido. Es como si el Señor le dijera,
“Ve, y verás”.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
“The Lord is kind and merciful!!” Yes, indeed we know, as we
have been taught, and through our faith, that the Lord is merciful when we
seek forgiveness for our transgressions. This is true even when we do not
“fully” stop from our faults that somehow find their way back into our lives
without much notice. But, care must be taken as the readings warn us that
though the Lord hears our pleas for help, forgiveness or to end whatever
ails us spiritually, there is a point that we are expected to faithfully repent.
Our Lord’s expression of love is his forgiveness; yet we must take care and
not assume our Lord will have endless patience. We note in the first reading, that the Chosen People, though freed from their bondage, after a while
grumbled and tested the Lord. The Israelites were forgiven many times; however, because of their sins and testing of the Lord, not all entered into the
Promised Land. Saint Paul in the second reading provides a very general
but thorough lesson concerning the plight of Moses and the people of God.
He warns the Corinthians (and us) not to take our salvation for granted and
somehow think we are secure in Christ. To further make the point, Jesus
tells us twice to repent lest we perish spiritually. We learn that because one
is “good” and another “bad” does in no way guarantee that one is a lesser
or greater sinner.
Lent should be a time for us to be reflective and to awaken to
the elusive truth that we cannot put off “our repentance.” Now is the time,
as we do not know when we will have our last day--today is the day for
confession and repentance before the Lord. Let us not be like the “fig tree”
and just take up space in the Lord’s
garden, a barren tree, but resolve to cultivate oneself with His word ,to be
fruitful and to produce an abundant yield of Christ’s love for all.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
“El Señor es bueno y misericordioso” Si, todos lo sabemos, se nos ha
enseñado a través de la fe que el Señor es misericordioso cuando le
pedimos perdón de nuestras ofensas. Esto es verdad aun cuando no
paremos de cometer las mismas faltas pues las cometemos aun cuando
no nos demos cuenta. Pero, debemos de tener cuidado pues las
lecturas nos advierten que aun cuando el Señor escucha nuestras
plegarias de ayuda, perdona hasta el punto de que nos ayude
espiritualmente y ahí se espera que nosotros nos arrepintamos
fielmente. La expresión de amor del Señor es su perdón; aun así debeos tener cuidado y no asumir que la paciencia del Señor es
interminable. Notamos en la Primera Lectura que el Pueblo Escogido de
Dios, ya libre de su esclavitud, después de un tiempo se quejó y probó
al Señor. Los Israelitas fueron perdonados muchas veces; sin embargo
por sus pecados y por probar al Señor no entraron en la Tierra
Prometida. San Pablo en la Segunda Lectura proporciona una lección
muy general pero completa concerniente al la difícil situación de Moisés
y del pueblo de Dios. El advierte a los Corintias (y a nosotros) no tomar
a la ligera nuestra salvaciόn y pensar que estamos seguros en Cristo.
Para hacer este punto mas claro, Jesus nos dice un par de veces que
nos arrepintamos sino vamos a perecer espiritualmente. Aprendemos
que porque uno es “bueno” y otro ‘malo” eso no garantiza que el primero es menos pecador que el segundo.
La Cuaresma debería ser un tiempo de reflexión y para despertar a la
verdad de que no podemos postergar nuestro arrepentimiento. Ahora es
el tiempo, pues no sabemos cuando será nuestro ultimo día - hoy es el
día para confesarnos y arrepentirnos ante el Señor. No seamos como la
higuera que nada mas tomamos espacio en el jardín del Señor, un árbol
estéril, pero resolvamos a cultivarnos en Su palabra, para ser fructíferos
y producir una cosecha abundante del amor de Cristo para todos.

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to
“give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there
are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in
need, they seek help at the parish. They are, in effect, ringing your

tenemos el Santísimo expuesto todo el dia y cada primer Lunes

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Ash Wednesday is not observed by Eastern Christians, perhaps
because, at least in Orthodox practice, weekdays are not proper
days for the Divine Liturgy. Typically, “Great Lent” has a bit of a
prelude. On “Meatfare Sunday” the faithful have their last chance
to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week later,
“Cheesefare Sunday” has dairy on the menu for the last time until
Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sunday, officially
called “Sunday of Forgiveness.” the church gathers for
“Forgiveness Vespers.” The faithful identify with Adam and Eve,
forgiving one another in order to experience God’s forgiveness.
The desire to set aside all bitterness, and to achieve harmony and
reconciliation in the family and with one’s neighbors gives a
remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At
the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed
to reflect the new season.
How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradition. No
meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil. Some traditions permit
vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict
fasting is not permitted on the Sabbath or the Lord’s Day, so on
Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat mitigated, and wine
and oil are allowed. If the Feast of the Annunciation falls during

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Muchas naciones latinoamericanas son beneficiadas por
organizaciones caritativas extranjeras. Pero estas organizaciones
no siempre pueden suplir las necesidades de los pueblos
latinoamericanos, por eso los obispos de Chile buscaron la
manera de motivar a su pueblo para que ayude a sus propios
desafortunados. En 1982 los obispos chilenos crearon una nueva
practica cuaresmal llamada la Campaña de Fraternidad. Esta
Campaña se motiva en las observancias penitenciales de la
oración, el ayuno y la caridad.
Esta práctica de la Iglesia chilena se basa en la tradición
cristiana de las obras de caridad y la acción social. La Campaña
de Fraternidad también se funda en la espiritualidad cristiana de
la hermandad. Los que tienen la manera de ayudar han
compartido a través de los proyectos de esta obra con jóvenes en
riesgo social, madres solteras, ancianos, prisioneros y otros
grupos marginados. Esto se hace en un espíritu de mutualidad
entre los hijos e hijas del creador.
Esta campaña cuaresmal nos desafía a buscar la manera de
ayudar a los pobres no como personas necesitada sino como
hermanas y hermanos en Cristo a los cual debemos nuestra
cooperación para mejorar sus vidas. Ellos en torno son la
presencia de Cristo quien se encuentra en los más pequeños de
la sociedad.

PRAYER & LIFE WORKSHOP
A NEW EVANGELIZATION
Come to a series of 15 workshops. By
means of a woven pattern of meditations
on the Word, intensive prayer, community
reflection and silencing exercises,
participants of the workshops will slowly
become filled with a peace that surpasses
all understanding. Result? Overcoming of
complexes, traumas, controlling your
nerves, emotion stability and joy of living.
Each workshop runs for two hours each
Wednesday beginning on January 27,
2016—one in the morning from 9:30-11:30
am and one in the evening from 7:00-9:00
pm in St. Lawrence classroom #1. For

TALLER DE ORACION Y VIDA
¿Sabes dialogar con Dios? Los talleres
de Oración y Vida son un servicio para
aprender y profundizar en el arte de orar.
Se aprende a orar de una manera ordenada, variada y progresiva a través de
15 sesiones donde la persona se sana y
libera de angustias, miedos, tristezas y
ansiedades. Si no sabes relacionarte con
el Señor, ésta es la oportunidad para
