MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ.
This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of
God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing
conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we
are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian
lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the
needs of others. We commit ourselves to the beatitudes, to the
spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the
larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the
dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand
on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service
and witness.
In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in
our midst.

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, “When you have done all
you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable servants; we
have only done what we were obligated to do.”
This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring
the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned, for indeed we are only doing “what we are obligated to do.”
Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated as we seek to
help all in need with our spiritual wealth in Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the mid-1960s, many religious congregations that had maintained
a custom of assigning new names to their members allowed a return
to baptismal names. The practice stems from the origins of monastic
life, when a desire to flee the world and its enchantments caused a
severe break with family life and commitments. A new name signified
that the old person had died and a new one was coming to life. Some
orders even spread funeral palls over their entrants and tolled the
funeral bell. On a practical level, in a crowded monastery of a few
hundred monks or nuns, it made sense not to have six Brother Alfrics
or nine Sister Clares. The one name, one person rule worked well.
In more recent times, a young woman entering the convent might be
given her parents' names as a way of honoring their generosity, so
Hilda might become Sister Philip Margaret after her father and mother.
A cherished name in the order might be bestowed on a newcomer so
that there would always be a Brother Owen around, or a young person
might adopt the name of a beloved saint. A handful of religious congregations, like Mother Barat's Religious of the Sacred Heart, always
used family names. Many monasteries still bestow a new name at the
end of probation. Other religious institutes have revived the custom of
changing their candidates' names at the end of novitiate, although for
the most part religious who were around at the time of the Council
were happy to get their baptismal names back. A few, of course, cherished their acquired names and have held on to them, so convents
still hold the creativity badge for naming. Where else today can you
find great names today like Madeleva, Siena, and Celestina?

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Desde el siglo XVII, el 2 de octubre la Iglesia ha celebrado la
conmemoración de los Santos Ángeles Custodios. Muchos de
nosotros conocemos la imagen de un niñito y su hermanita caminando
por un puente tembloroso y podrido. Sobre ellos está en vigilante una
bella criatura halada, su ángel protector. Esta imagen de seres con
alas es una que los cristianos tomamos de los paganos romanos y
griegos, ya que bíblicamente hablando la mayor parte de los ángeles
no tienen alas.
Últimamente los ángeles se han puesto de moda entre los no
cristianos, pero no debemos dejarnos llevar por sus doctrinas new
age. Muchos de ellos buscan poner a los ángeles a su propio servicio
pidiéndoles dinero, su pareja y otras cosas. Los ángeles no existen
para enriquecernos. Más bien hay que saber que los ángeles están
para glorificar y servir a Dios y cuidar a los humanos marginados.
Jesús mismo nos dice que hay que cuidarnos de despreciar a los
pequeños (gente pobre y oprimida) "porque les aseguro que sus
ángeles en el cielo están constantemente en presencia de mi Padre
celestial" (Mateo 18:10-11)

Weekly Reflection from Father Isnardo
Lord, increase our faith
“Lord increase our faith,” the apostles asked Jesus.
Elsewhere they requested, “Lord teach us how to pray” (Lk 11:1).
In essence the two requests were the same. For to pray is to
focus the heart on God, to love and trust God, to have faith in
God’s concern for us. Every prayer is an act of faith in God, and
conversely every we turn to God in faith, we are praying. It is no more
possible to have faith without prayer than to swim without water. But
we must try to pray to God in the right spirit. For often we are trying to
bring God around to our way of thinking rather than putting our
thoughts under God’s guidance.
Sometimes perhaps, we regard prayer as a kind of magical last
resort, worth a try when all else fails. There is a story about a lawyer
walking along a street with a friend who was something of a scholar.
When they came to a ladder leaning over the sidewalk and against a
house which was being painted, the friend refused to pass under it.
“Surely you don’t believe in that superstition, said the lawyer. “No, I
don’t exactly believe in it,” was the reply, “but I never waste a chance
of avoiding an accident.” Well, maybe that’s how some of us approach
prayer. We don’t strongly believe in it, but we admit the possibility that
it might work, as a last resort. So we could join in that request, “Lord,
increase our faith; Lord, teach us how to pray.”
Jesus did not just teach his friends how to pray, he showed them
how, his own example. Never did any human being pray as he did.
Even in the middle of a sermon he would turn to God and address him
as Father. Early in the morning he would steal away to the hillside, his
favorite place for quiet prayer. It was his custom, whenever he visited
Jerusalem, to pray at night in the Garden of Gethsemane, so his being
there on the night of his arrest was not unusual. On that occasion we
know that “being in anguish he prayed the longer.” What he prayed that
night is clearly reported. “Father, if it is your will, take this cup away
from me. Nevertheless, let your will, not mine be done” (Lk 22:42f). Well,
the Father did not take away the cup of suffering from Jesus. But by
embracing the will of God, something greater was to follow for Jesus,
his resurrection from the dead. “Unless a wheat grain falls on the
ground and dies, it remains only a single grain” (Jn 12:24).
The letter to the Hebrews sums it up: “During his life on earth, he
offered prayer and petition, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who
had the power to raise him from the dead, and he submitted so humbly
that his prayer was heard.” May God grant that our prayer may be
heard also, and that being guided through life by the spirit of Jesus we
may be in his company for ever in heaven.

BUS TRIP TO RENO Oct 22, 2016
Saint Lawrence will be hosting a day trip to the
Silver Legacy in Reno on Saturday, October 22,
2016. The bus will be boarding in the church parking lot at 7:00 am,
and the bus will leave promptly at 7:30 am. There will be refreshments
served, bingo played, and raffles drawn on the ride to Reno. The cost
is $35 per person with a $5 food coupon and $10 cash coupon given
back. Tickets will be sold after all Masses beginning October 2nd and in
the office during the week.
Door prize and food donations would be appreciated to make the trip
more enjoyable.

Reflexión Semanal del Padre Isnardo
Aumenta nuestra fe
El Evangelio de hoy se abre con la petición de los apóstoles a
Jesús: «¡Auméntanos la fe!». En lugar de satisfacer su deseo,
Jesús parece querer agudizarlo. Dice: «Si tuvierais fe como un
grano de mostaza...». La fe es, sin duda, el tema dominante de
este domingo. En la primera lectura se oye la célebre afirmación de
Habacuc, retomada por san Pablo en la Carta a los Romanos: «El
justo vivirá por su fe». También la aclamación al Evangelio está en
sintonía con este tema: «Lo que ha conseguido la victoria sobre el
mundo es nuestra fe»
La fe tiene distintos matices de significado. Esta vez desearía
reflexionar sobre la fe en su acepción más común y elemental: creer
o no en Dios. No la fe según la cual se decide si uno es católico o
protestante, cristiano o musulmán, sino la fe según la cual se decide
si uno es creyente o no creyente, creyente o ateo. Un texto de la
Escritura dice: «El que se acerca a Dios ha de creer que existe y que
recompensa a los que le buscan» . Éste es el primer escalón de la fe,
sin el cual no hay otros.
Para hablar de la fe a un nivel tan universal no podemos basarnos
sólo en la Biblia, porque ésta tendría valor sólo para nosotros, los
cristianos, y, en parte, para los judíos, no para los demás. Por fortuna,
Dios ha escrito dos «libros»: uno es la Biblia, el otro la creación. Uno
está formado por letras y palabras, el otro por cosas. No todos conocen,
o pueden leer, el libro de la Escritura, pero todos, desde cualquier
latitud y cultura, pueden leer el libro que es la creación. De noche tal
vez mejor, incluso, que de día. «Los cielos cuentan la gloria de Dios,
la obra de sus manos anuncia el firmamento... Por toda la tierra se
extiende su eco, y hasta el confín del mundo su mensaje» (Salmo 19).
Pablo afirma: «Lo invisible de Dios, desde la creación del mundo, se
deja ver a la inteligencia a través de sus obras» (Romanos 1, 20).
Urge disipar el difundido equívoco según el cual la ciencia ya ha
liquidado el problema y ha explicado exhaustivamente el mundo, sin
necesidad de recurrir a la idea de un ser fuera de él llamado Dios. En
cierto sentido, actualmente la ciencia nos acerca más a la fe en un
creador que en el pasado. Tomemos la famosa teoría que explica el
origen del universo con el «Big Bang» o la gran explosión inicial. En
una millonésima de millonésima de segundo, se pasa de una situación
en la que no existe aún nada, ni espacio ni tiempo, a una situación
en la que comenzó el tiempo, existe el espacio y, en una partícula
infinitesimal de materia, existe ya, en potencia, todo el sucesivo
universo de miles de millones de galaxias, como lo conocemos hoy.
Hay quien dice: «No tiene sentido plantearse la cuestión de qué
había antes de aquel instante, porque no existe un "antes" cuando
aún no existe el tiempo». Pero yo digo: ¡cómo no plantearse ese
interrogante! «Remontarse a la historia del cosmos--se afirma también-es como hojear las páginas de un inmenso libro, partiendo del final.
Llegados al principio se percibe que es como si faltara la primera
página». Creo que precisamente, sobre esta primera página que falta,
la revelación bíblica tiene algo que decir. No se puede pedir a la
ciencia que se pronuncie sobre este «antes» que está fuera de
tiempo, pero ella no debería tampoco cerrar el círculo, dando a
entender que todo está resuelto.
No se pretende «demostrar» la existencia de Dios, en el sentido que
damos comúnmente a esta palabra. Aquí abajo vemos como en un
espejo y en un enigma, dice san Pablo. Cuando un rayo de sol entra
en una habitación, lo que se ve no es la luz misma, sino la danza del
polvo que recibe y revela la luz. Así es Dios: no le vemos directamente,
sino como en un reflejo, en la danza de las cosas. Esto explica por qué
a Dios no se le alcanza más que dando el «salto» de la fe.
