Saint Brendan Catholic Church Shallotte, North Carolina The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2015 Reflections on the Sunday Readings Family life and community life go together. We may think that family life is an intimate, private relationship with no real impact on the larger society. The joys and sorrows, successes and failures of family may seem distant from community highs and lows. Today’s readings take a different view. The family has a vital impact on society. Family transcends the home and touches all humankind around the world. Psalm 128 is a wisdom psalm that shows the consequences of fearing God and walking in God’s ways. The husband father will experience prosperity and the blessings of work, marriage, and family; however, the blessings of the God-fearing person are linked with the prosperity of Jerusalem. Family life and community life go together. The author of Colossians presents the general principles for life in Christ and specific applications for the Christian home. Love is the virtue that binds all the rest together and brings them to perfection. All are one body in Christ. Luke shows the committed concern that Mary and Joseph had for Jesus. They are heartsick to find him missing and astounded to find him teaching in the Temple. Theirs is the parental challenge -- to hold on and let go at the same time. Responsibility, respect, and concern are but three of the domestic virtues that affect all society. Just a reminder… the next Family Centered Faith Formation session is Sunday, January 2, 2016. It is for children in grades Pre-K thru 8th grade and their parents/ grandparents. High School students are invited to attend the session with the parents or work as volunteers assisting the facilitators. We look forward to seeing you in Brendan Hall at 9:15am. Following our session the 11:15am Mass will be a Children’s Liturgy for Faith Formation families and parishioners. Contact Diane & Tom Nagle for more information [email protected] Bell Tower Entrance: As you may be aware, we have a water problem with the water in the Bell Tower Entrance. The Parish Council has made the decision to close that entrance when excess water collects. Please help us ensure the safety of our parishioners by not using the entrance when you see either cones or yellow tape blocking that entrance. The ushers and greeters will also remind us that it is unsafe to enter the church using that door. We continue to search for a long term solution to this water problem. Thank you for your cooperation. Thank You Again: All of our Christmas projects, The Giving Tree, for our children in Faith Formation, The Angel Tree, for Teens with a parent in prison, and the Senior Citizen Tree, for Brunswick Senior Resources were all a huge success again this year. Thank your for being so generous with others that are not so fortunate. You made many seniors, teens and children very happy with your generosity this year. If you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital, nursing home/assisted living facility, etc. you or your family must contact the nearest church.
