Saint Brendan Catholic Church Shallotte, North Carolina 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2015 Reflections on the Readings We tend to envy those who have made it to the top for their power prestige. On the surface we see privilege and much status, but much deeper are the obligations that come with leadership. Today’s readings regard the top as the position of greatest service. The servant in the first reading represents those who are willing to share in a new and daring enterprise. By accepting this call the servant opens himself to suffering on behalf of the people. The leader’s suffering will restore all to life with God . The author of Hebrews portrays Jesus as the model of selfgiving -- a model who encourages all people. The author speaks of Jesus’ divinity but does not disparage his humanity. Jesus is tempted; he is human. Therefore, the Lord is able to help all who are tempted. Jesus’ suffering leads to perfection -- a perfection that results in eternal salvation. In today’s gospel passage, James and John seek positions of honor when the Lord comes into his glory. Jesus explains that real honor is bound up with suffering. The “cup” is nothing less than the passion. Some people exercise their status in a show of power. By contrast, those who aspire to greatness in the Lord’s kingdom must be servants. Genuine honor is found only in generous service.
