Saint Brendan Catholic Church Shallotte, North Carolina Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 Reflections on the Sunday Readings Today’s account from the Acts of the Apostles paraphrases Isaiah 49:6, “I have set you to be light for the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth” (Acts 13:47). Originally spoken about the promised Messiah, these words apply equally to Paul and all who preach the Word. Discipleship guarantees both success and failure, Failure, in this passage, is Paul and Barnabas being expelled by the Jews; success is their disciples’ experience of being filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. The Book of Revelation speaks of Christians who know rejection in the form of persecution. Today’s verses promise triumph to those who persevere. “They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat… God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 4:16-17. In the gospel, when Jesus describes God as greater than all, he is declaring that his leadership does not rely on political strength but rather on faith in God and God’s Word. The bond between Jesus and the Father is so strong that no one will ever be able to snatch his sheep out of his hands. The modern Christian must allow the Word of God to impact daily living. God’s Word is reflected in words of support between friends, in words of fidelity between husband and wife, in words of honesty between business associates. Our words join today’s Scriptures in calling us to be a light to the nations. Preserving Our History: Work continues on archiving our church’s history. If anyone has pictures (need especially late 1980’s and 90’s), any stories, or event information you could share please put them in the mail slot marked “History” (mail slots are behind Info Center). Any questions, contact Rita at 287-664 If you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital, nursing home/assisted living facility, etc. you or your family must contact the nearest church. Page 5
