This Week's Torah Portion in a Nutshell: Vayechi Genesis 47:28-50:26, PAGES 293-311 From "Torah Sparks" Jacob, nearing death, asks Joseph to bury him in Canaan, then later adopts and blesses Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. Jacob then offers final words to his sons -- some of them harsh, others filled with blessing. Jacob dies, and the brothers bury him in the Cave of Machpelah. The brothers fear once again that Joseph will take revenge on them for selling him into slavery years before, but Joseph reassures them that God meant for things to happen the way they did. Joseph dies and is embalmed, with his brothers promising that he, too, would be buried in Canaan. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel referred to the Sabbath as a “Palace in Time.” This day is a luxurious refuge from the chaos of the rest of the week…but a palace does not build itself. The various laws, traditions and customs of the day serve as the blueprints that allow us to create a certain atmosphere in our congregation; they help us to reconstruct the Palace in Time every single week. One of the “specifications” in the blueprint is that we refrain from the use of electronics—including cellphones—on Shabbat, especially inside our building. Powering down our phones allows us to focus less on the little screen and more on the spiritual, the restful and those around us. We unplug from the grid in order to plug into the Divine and a greater sense of community…and just “being” in the moment. Please help us to create our own Palace in Time by refraining from using your phone (including texting, surfing the web, tweeting, etc). If you must make use of your phone, please step outside of the building to do so. The "palace" guards appreciate your cooperation and understanding. *Sunday Mincha/Ma'ariv at 5:00 pm will be held at the home of Marsha Emerman, 469 Leamington Court, 863-2350. Time for Purimspiel Rehearsals Kids are Welcome in Services We love kids and welcome them in our congregation and in our sanctuary. Jewish tradition teaches us that the sounds of infants testify to God's glory and power. If your child is "testifying", not to worry. If, however, your child really wants a break, please feel free to bring them to the Atrium or the Nursery until s/he is ready to return to the Sanctuary. All children are invited to the Bimah for Adon Olam for a special treat from the Rabbis. After services during Kiddush, don't miss the "Kiddie Table" in the Social Hall; we look forward to greeting you there. Phantom of the Purimspiel is this year’s colorful undertaking – penned by the illustrious Ken Clubok and directed by the one-and-only Todd Decker Kaplonski. Purim is March 4-5. We’ll start rehearsing in January. The schedule for that is still coalescing, but we’ll have an initial meeting on Sunday, January 4 at 10 am. If you want to star or you want to help, please join us then and contact Cantor Chomsky. If you can’t be there that day but want to be part of the festivities, please be sure to be in touch with Cantor Chomsky in advance of the date. Rehearsals are mostly Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings – but there will be some variations. Stay tuned for more info! Upcoming Events Rabbi Ungar's Bar Mitzvah Brunch - Really!
