"Then the L-RD said to Moses, “Inscribe this in a document as a reminder,
and read it aloud to Joshua: I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from
under heaven!” And Moses built an altar and named it Adonai-nissi. He said,
“It means, ‘Hand upon the throne of the L-RD!’ The L-RD will be at war with
Amalek throughout the ages.”
This Biblical proscription gave birth to a number of Jewish traditions over
time. However, before we get to that list we need to ask what does “Hand
upon the throne of the L-rd” means? Because the Hebrew name - Adonai-nissi
- given by Moses to this altar does not directly mean what the Torah gives as
the meaning to the name. So Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (12th century France)
tells us that until evil the likes of Amalek is eradicated from the world G–d’s
“throne” is covered (i.e., diminished). So the command to eradicate Amalek
was a command to remove evil from the world. The 15th Italian commentator
Sforno says that this quote was what Moses said to Joshua. That he handed
the charge to wage this generational war with evil over to his next in
command as a symbolic handing of the torch from Moses to them. With these
two comments in mind the Hebrew name given to the altar – Adonai-nissi –
seems clearer to us now. For it means “G-d is my sign” and by seeing G-d as
a sign it is meant to spur people into action against the twisted cruelties that
evil perpetrates onto the world.
So, with this generational command in mind consider these traditions:
This section is read every year before Purim. On Purim the traditions to make
noise with a grogger at any mention of Haman (a purported descendent of
Amalek) is a traditional way of “blotting out” the name of Amalek. But a lesser
known Purim custom does this even better: people would write the name
“Haman” on the soles of their shoes before Purim. As Haman’s name is read
the shoe is taken off and slapped against the floor. Making noise AND with
each slap scraping away the name that was written on the sole. A symbolic
gesture in the battle of right versus wrong? Yes. Trivial? No.
