President’s Message
Adath Shalom relies on the generous contributions of our congregants. Our Kol Nidre Appeal allows us
to continue functioning on a day-to-day basis. Simply put, it is our most important fundraiser. Our
Sustaining Membership Program allows us to provide for those families who cannot afford to pay full
dues rather than turning away those who want to join but are otherwise unable to pay.
Thanks to our generous donors, so far this fiscal year we have raised $81,000 in contributions for the Kol
Nidre Appeal and the Sustaining Membership Program. Those of you who have donated $360 or more
to either of these two important fundraisers will be invited to a Donor Appreciation Brunch in the Spring.
Congregants also have generously contributed to our various synagogue funds. For those donors who have contributed to our
Torah Fund, a special lunch is scheduled for Sunday, January 11 at 12:30 pm. Torah scribe Linda Coppleson, who repaired
and reconditioned three of our Torah scrolls last year, will be on hand to explain the process.
Thanks to the donors who have contributed to the Mosberg Family Holocaust Education Fund, we are able to bring Eugenie
Mukeshimana, a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and founder of the Genocide Survivors Network, to speak to our
congregation on Friday night, January 16 at 6:00 pm. Two days later, on Sunday, January 18, an overnight synagogue trip to
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington will take place, also subsidized by the Mosberg Family Holocaust
Education Fund.
Finally, thanks to the generous donations to the Hoexter Family Caring Fund, we are able to have Synagogue Social Worker
Susan Solomon on site twice a week to help out with the critically important pastoral related needs of our congregants.
Please come meet Susan on Thursday, January 8 over wine and cheese at either 4:45 pm or 7:00 pm in the synagogue lobby.
Susan can be reached at [email protected].
A big Yasher Koach to our donors who make all of this possible.
Since we moved all Youth Services to the same Saturday morning each month, the attendance has been excellent. In both
November and December, we had over thirty children participate in Tot Shabbat (preschoolers), Shabbat Chavurah
(kindergarten through 2nd grade) or Junior Congregation (3rd grade through 6th grade). Having all the Youth Services on the
same Saturday of the month allows our families with children of different ages to have a specific program for each of their
children to attend. Our next Youth Services is scheduled for Saturday morning, January 17.
For Youth Services in the future, we are putting together a Puppet Theater. When I visited Israel with my family a year ago,
we attended a Saturday morning service in which all the children eagerly gathered around the Puppet Theater to hear stories
about the parsha of the week. I want to thank Jerry Moses and Bruce Wolosin for building the structure for the Puppet
Theater which is now in our Social Hall. Come check it out. We are still looking for volunteers to decorate, design and run
shows for the Puppet Theater. Contact Rabbi Rudin at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering.
There is still time to sign up to join Rabbi Rudin and your fellow congregants for our upcoming synagogue trip to Israel from
February 19 to March 1. Our tour provider, Israel Tour Connection in Livingston, New Jersey, has many years of experience
in putting together memorable and inspirational synagogue trips to Israel. For more information about Israel Tour Connection
and our specific synagogue trip in February, visit israeltour.com, click on the Group Tours link and then on the Synagogue
Tours link. Our Israel Affairs Chair, Andrea Malmud, is also available to answer any of your questions. She can be reached
at 973-865-2077 or at [email protected].
I want to wish a Mazel Tov to Jessica Bleier (January 24) and Eitan Leinwand (January 31) as they are called to the Torah
this month to celebrate their Bat and Bar Mitzvahs.
I also want to wish a warm welcome to the four families that recently joined Adath Shalom. Bruchim Habaim to the
Dershewitz, Finger, Freifeld and Grodsky families. Altogether, eighteen families joined our synagogue in 2014. We look
forward to sharing many joyful celebrations with all of them.
Regards and Shalom,
Mike Stepak

Remarks from Rabbi Rudin
Eight Lights - In Memoriam
Ner HaShem nishmat Adam - the human soul is G-d’s candle…
What do you call a place where the generations gather and connect? Where the dreams of the
past mingle with the dreams of the future, where the eternal values of the Torah are lived in
the day to day, where the traditions, language and visions of the Jewish people are nurtured?
What do you call a spiritual home where lives are lived in the light of eternity, where birth is celebrated, coming of
age and the joining of lives in marriage ushered in with joy, where grief is shared and support offered with such
love, where life is lived with meaning, renewed with faith, nurtured with hope?
We call it Adath Shalom - a Kehilla Kedosha, a sacred community.
The flames of our Chanukah Menorahs danced this year, reminders of miracles both past, present and future. Our
Shabbat Candles ushered in rest and peace, our Havdalah Candles brought in a new week of labor and innovation.
And our Shiva Candles were kindled as well. Kindled in grief, for we have lost much. Kindled in sorrow, for
each loss diminishes us. But kindled also in affirmation; for we have been so blessed by the presence of so many
righteous, beautiful Neshamas, souls whose legacy is built into the spiritual makeup of our families and our
community.
This year, we kindled eight Chanukah candles; and we kindled eight Shiva candles at the loss of eight of our
members; their loss brings to mind their uniqueness, their lives lived in grace, meaning and strength. I wanted to
share just a few words to recall them to memory: Zecher Tzaddik Livracha - the memory of the righteous is a
blessing.
We bid farewell to Steve Bitterman, Shlomo ben Shaul, who woke his children in the wee hours to take them
outside to watch the stars; a man of science, of love, laughter and wonder; a trailblazer of the Jewish community in
Morris County. We stand with Liz, an Adath Shalom Past President, and join our hearts with hers in support at
her loss.
We bid farewell to Mark Dunn, Adath Shalom’s hero of hope, whose warmth, gentleness, and humor touched us,
whose courage inspired us. Menachem ben Chanan David v’Menucha, your legacy will always be in our hearts
and we stand with Michelle, Arnold and Jeff, blessed by your presence.
We bid farewell to Eugene Ginsberg, Yosef ben Chaim HaLevi, whose connection with Adath Shalom extended
over generations, a leader in business, a man of heart and vision, who combined entrepreneurial innovation with
kindness, commitment and compassion.
We bid farewell to Brian Mazal, taken too soon; a loving son, husband, father and grandfather who loved to laugh,
to share good times with those he loved, a man of business with a gentle poetic heart, who faced adversity with
integrity and whose legacy is caring. We stand with Karen in her time of loss.

Remarks from Rabbi Rudin continued
We bid farewell to Eileen Markowitz, Yocheved Bat Aryeh Leib V’Chana Rachel, a gentle artist, gardener, dreamer and lifelong equestrian who raised Shelties and with her beloved Sid graced our shul and community with her
support, commitment and presence. We reach out to Adath Shalom member Sid in honoring Lee’s memory and
stand with him.
We bid farewell to Julia Podbar, Yocheved Bat Moshe u’Penina, a member of Adath Israel and Adath Shalom for
most of her 98 years, from whose presence no one ever passed without some kindness, a compassionate caregiver
to her parents and her husband through his long illness, a loving aunt and a supportive presence to her family and
beyond.
We bid farewell to Louis Silberman, Eliezer ben Avraham, adventurer, inventor, and Navy veteran who was always there for his family; first mom and dad not only to their children and grandchildren but to whole generations
of sports teams and neighborhood kids. We stand with his daughter Faith Chinskey in honoring his memory and
legacy.
Finally, we light a candle in memory of the three young men who, while not members of our shul, are members of
our family- Eyal Yifrach, Naftali Fraenkel (an American citizen) and Gilad Shaar - the three young men martyred
trying to get home for Shabbat. We will not forget.
The eight candles that we kindle in memory of these members of our community burn and then eventually burn
down. But the candle of gratitude in our hearts for them, whose commitment and loyalty to their heritage and
community are inspirations and models for us, these flames of love, like the Ner Tamid, the eternal light over the
Holy Ark, will endure.
We begin the secular year with these remembrances not for grief, but for blessing - may the lights of their lives,
the radiance which does not fade or falter, bless those they love and the community they loved and kindle within
us the will to, like them, endure, stand strong in our faith and be, as the Jewish people has always been, beacons of
hope to all humanity.

Gratitude Mindset
To Increase Your Happiness& Your Health
I wish you a Happy New Year, 2015. It is that time of year when many of us set New Year’s
resolutions. These changes are frequently transitory as they are big changes to some negative
aspect of your life. This year, I urge you to make a different type of resolution, and one that has
been shown to increase your happiness and improve your all-around health. Adopt a Gratitude
Mindset, the practice of being thankful.
According to a Harvard Gazette article in 2010, “People spend almost 46.9% of their waking hours thinking
about something other than what they’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes them unhappy.” They
worry that something will happen in the future. They ruminate on past problems. This is a natural tendency of
us humans, but not usually very productive nor helpful and leads to great stress. Check out more about this study
at http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2010/11/wandering-mind-not-a-happy-mind/.
This Harvard study had a cell phone APP that tracked these patterns. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have an APP on
our phone (maybe a bit annoying) that alerts us when we are thinking negatively and, at that moment, give us a
tip as to how to think positively and have gratitude. Actually, it would probably be very annoying, at least until
we developed the skills to have more gratitude thoughts.
So let’s get started building your Gratitude Mindset. Below are 3 ways to create your own stop and take a
moment of gratitude. I hope you give them a try and are successful in bringing more gratitude into your life and
have more positive thoughts than negative.
I urge you to write down your gratitude thoughts - in a journal or a special place on your computer or cell phone.
Writing them down not only makes the statements more powerful, but you also reap the benefit of
reviewing the positive messages over and over which reinforces the gratitude. I suggest reading them over at
least weekly. Remember, it takes time and practice to build new skills; they say at least 21 days. So try the
Gratitude Mindset for at least that long. Hopefully you will continue all or part of the gratitude process.
Think gratitude thoughts upon waking up to start each day and to go to sleep each night for a more restful sleep.
Each time identify at least two (2) items of gratitude about events, people, or things in your life. This technique builds the positives. You can use this time for general gratitude about people in your life, things you
do or did, or even the weather. Or, you can focus on a specific issue that is important or challenging at the
time, such as relationships, finances, health, and steps towards fulfillment in your life.
When you are faced with an upsetting situation or person, think of three (3) things that are good about the
situation or person, if not at that moment, sometime in the past. This will put you in a more grateful mindset.
It will help defuse the situation and give you a chance to catch your emotional breath. Then, you can hopefully think more rationally, empathetically, and positively. Your response to the person will more likely be
less negative and hopefully open to problem solving.
Many people go around the table at Thanksgiving having each person say something they are thankful for that
year. Do this more frequently. It is a great way to share at a Shabbat dinner or launch the new week on
Sunday.

A wonderful resource on Gratitude is www.grategy.com - a website by Lisa Ryan. She offers weekly e-mail reminders on ways to develop the gratitude mindset and YouTube videos. She has published many books. One
that is highly valuable and practical is The Up Side of Down Times: Discovering the Power of Gratitude.
I wish you much success in increasing your Gratitude Mindset in 2015. Share the positive experiences with
your loved ones, as this has been shown to, not only, increase your positive thoughts and experiences, but also,
rub off on others. I would be grateful to hear about your successes in increasing your Gratitude Mindset.
If you find this Gratitude Mindset challenging to develop or find you are enmeshed in negative thoughts and
highly stressed, please give me a call to arrange a consultation. This is one of the services I am here to provide
to members of Adath Shalom. Call me at 973-539-8549 ext. 108.
Invitation
I hope you will join me on Thursday, January 8 for a program on other
ways to change your thoughts to change your life and reduce your
stress. Plus, there will be social time with refreshments for us to Meet
& Greet. The program will be offered 2x to help reach more members.
Select either 4:45-5:45 pm during Religious School or 7:00–8:00 pm.
See the flyer in the Bulletin for more details.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS continued
From Charlotte Frank / Education Director
Happy Secular New Year 2015!
I hope everyone had the chance to
enjoy some time off. December was
a busy month and January is looking
to be busy as well.
All of our classes, from Aleph
through Vov/Grades 1-6, are busy preparing for their
class services in the coming months. We will be
asking for your help in preparing festive onegs and
Kiddush lunches for these events.
Sunday, January 4, I invite all the Gimel parents to
join me for a session where you will create the siddur
cover for your child’s prayer book. Bring special photos or other decorations that you want to include on
this cover. If you can’t come that day between 12:30
and 2:30 pm, you can pick up a cover to work on at
home or you can come any other time and work in my
office. Please remember the covers are a surprise for
the students. We also need copy for your child’s book
plate in the siddur. Pam can give you samples from
previous years.
The Teacher Learning Conference is Sunday, January
11 from 2 to 5 PM and all of our teaching staff are
able to go thanks to your generous donations to the
Teacher Enrichment Fund. Besides a keynote speaker,
there will be two smaller learning sessions with ten
options to choose in each session.
On Sunday, January 25:
The Vov/Grade 6 class and parents are going to The
Partnership program on Mitzvot project ideas for Bar/
Bat Mitzvah from 9 to 11 a.m. for their class that day.
The same day, the Dalet/grade 4 class will be working
on their special art project for your home. We hope
that you have these dates on your calendar as we don’t
have make-up days.
Thursday, February 5, the Zayin Class/Grade 7 and
Hadar, our Rishon will be running a Tu B’Shevat
program for Grades 3-6/Gimel-Vov. Hadar is very excited to be doing this with the students. He is an amazing addition to our staff. Come out and meet him. He
is with the class most Thursdays.
Friday, February 6 is the Aleph Class/Grade 1 Family
Service. All are welcome as the Aleph class performs
some Shabbat songs during the service.
We welcome our newest students and I am always glad
to speak with families and prospective members about
our synagogue or Religious School. It is never too
early to start thinking about next year.
Charlotte
Youth Services are on January 17:
Junior Congregation is at 9:45 a.m. in the Beit Midrash/Library.
Shabbat Chavurah for K-2 is in the “old” four-year old
room and Tot Shabbat for Pre-K is in the Kindergarten
room. Both programs start at 10:30 a.m.
We have no school on Sunday, January 18, which is
Martin Luther King weekend.
One way to honor your son or daughter at
their Bar/Bat Mitzvah is to have family
and friends read from the Torah. This is
also a meaningful way to honor loved
ones on their Yahrzeit. Cantor Jack will
record a CD for you and give you the text.
Please contact the Synagogue Office to
request a Torah portion and CD.

B’NAI MITZVAH
Eitan is the son of Laurie and Jason Leinwand and brother
to Aleza and Noah. He attends Randolph Middle School, where
his favorite subject is Social Studies and he loves playing
percussion in the band. When Eitan grows up, he would like to
be an NHL hockey player. If that doesn’t work, he’d like to be a
tech entrepreneur.
To Eitan, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means becoming a
young man. He is looking forward to wearing a tallit, having
aliyot and reading from the Torah. He is proud to be a Jew
because of the special customs associated with being Jewish. He
loves celebrating the holidays with his family
Eitan Cooper Leinwand
(Eitan Chaim)
will become a
Bar Mitzvah on
January 31, 2015.
Eitan’s wish for the future is that there is peace in Israel
and all over the world. His mitzvah project was collecting
bicycles for the non-profit organization Pedals for Progress. He
was successful in obtaining fifty-six (56) bikes and over $800 in
funds to help ship them to Nicaragua, where those bicycles will
help fifty-six families have greater opportunities to succeed.
SHABBAT SHAPERS
Join this free weekly interactive program on Fridays, from 9:30-10:30am,
with Rabbi Rudin to teach your child about Jewish values, holidays and Shabbat!
The place to be Friday mornings is with Rabbi Rudin and the adorable participants of the Shabbat
Shapers Program. Shaping our littlest munchkins into menches, Rabbi Rudin leads the group in
Jewish music, crafts and kiddush. Participants have a chance to stay after program to continue
the fun, playing and socializing with friends in the preschool room.
The program has been such a huge success and we are always looking for volunteers to help Rabbi
Rudin. Thank you to Brian Kalver for stepping in when the Rabbi had Rabbinical duties, as well as
Wendy Becker and Michelle Dunn for also coming out for a morning of fun.

Chazak
Join us for Forgiveness (and Lunch) on Tuesday, January 13 at 12 noon
Start the new year off with a good schmooze, a nice shul-cooked lunch and an emotionally clean slate! Hear
Sandra, certified senior advisor and grant recipient of the New York State Council on the Arts, talk about
letting go … of anger and resentment.
The ability to forgive provides many physical and emotional benefits. Yet most of us find it difficult to let go
of past resentment, anger and disappointment. And if you're in the wrong, why are the words "I'm sorry" so
hard to say? This program explores many ways to forgive, apologize and repair damaged relationships.
Please RSVP so we know how much lunch to prepare! Call Cookie Samuels at 973 366-0763 or email her at
[email protected]. And bring your friends!
In November, Chazak enjoyed Chaim
Lauer's surprisingly authoritative
presentation on Bubbemeises.

Purim is coming!
E-mails will be sent mid-January with information on how to order Purim
baskets on happypurim.com.
We will be assembling the baskets on Sunday morning, February 22nd and
will need lots of helpers to get the baskets made. This has been a really
successful fundraiser for the synagogue in the past and hope we can continue
that trend.
Any questions please contact Robin Suskind at [email protected]

attend a four year institution of higher learning in the fall following graduation and have participated in either a high
school athletic or music program.

Giving is a part of our Jewish heritage and our Jewish way of life. Traditionally, Jews give “tzedakah” to commemorate occasions,
both happy and sad, and to acknowledge honors (aliyot), accomplishments, friends...almost anything. Giving can take many forms.
One can give of their time and effort to the Jewish community or to the synagogue. One can give books, tapes, or other necessary
and tangible items. Many, however, choose to give money, either to individual funds available through the synagogue, or to the
general fund, allowing the leadership to use the donation in whatever way it deems most necessary.
