Pastor’s notes:
On this Sunday in Ordinary Time we see Jesus expanding his ministry and exercising his
authority as the Son of God made man. As we see Jesus casting out unclean spirits with
authority we begin to see his divinity at work in his humanity; we begin to see in veiled form
the glory of God that Moses and the people saw on Mt. Sinai/Horeb. Thus we begin to
understand that Jesus is God's answer to the people’s plea to God on Mt. Sinai/Horeb: “Let [us]
not hear the voice of the Lord [our] God any more, or ever again see this great fire, lest [we]
die.” For Moses and those around him to hear and to see God as He revealed Himself on Mt.
Sinai/Horeb was to come close to death, so overwhelming was that experience. So God found
another way to reveal Himself to His people. The Prophet God promises to send
became known in the people’s expectation as “The Prophet” which is why the Jewish
authorities questioning John ask him if he is “The Prophet.” Of course, John’s answer was
“no”, for Jesus was “The Prophet” promised, the one who would speak for God the
Father. This being true, we are called to listen intently to Jesus and to look intently at him each
day. In this way we will come to see and know the God that revealed Himself to Moses both
on Mt. Sinai/Horeb and on the Mount of the Transfiguration.

A Bit of Humor
At an airline ticket counter, a small boy, with his mother, told the
agent he was 2 years old.
The man looked at him suspiciously and asked, “Do you know
what happens to little boys who lie?” ”Yes. They get to fly at halfprice.”

The Society is in need of some volunteers periodically to help pick up and deliver furniture. If you are
able to assist in this work please contact us. If you also have a pick-up truck, that’s a bonus. We are accepting donations of furniture, bedding, towels and other household effects if you have any that you
no longer use. We quickly recycle these items to families who have very limited resources. Call us to
arrange a convenient pick up time.
During the past year our members responded to more than 1,000 requests for help from needy families
in the Alberni Valley. We have been able to assist in a wide variety of ways – advice and advocacy,
transportation, emergency food, furniture and household effects, home repairs, spiritual support, etc. No
work of charity is foreign to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Through personal contact we strive
to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice and joy. If these values appeal to you, check out how we operate by attending our next meeting at John Paul 11 School at
10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 12th; we won’t pressure you to join!
Tax receipts for last year’s donations will be mailed out this month. Once again we would like to express
our sincere thanks to all our donors who make possible the work we do.
Thank you and God bless you.
Catholic Schools’ Week
Today marks the beginning of Catholic Schools’ Week (CSW) in British Columbia. The theme this
year is Catholic Schools Live the Joy of the Gospel. Each and every year, Catholic schools throughout the province join together to send a
message about the importance and value of Catholic education. For those that are not aware,
there are six Catholic Schools in the Diocese (5 elementary and 1 high school) educating 1700 students. The schools are:
John Paul II in Port Alberni
St. Joseph’s School in Chemainus
Queen of Angels School in Duncan
St. Joseph’s Elementary, St. Patrick’s Elementary and St. Andrew’s Regional High School in
Victoria.
Thank you to all who have and are supporting our Catholic schools. We ask that whether you have a
Catholic school in your community or not, please pray for our Catholic schools. Our schools are a
blessing to the Diocese and the mission of
Catholic Education!
Total - $3,181.30
Thank you so much for your generosity.
This week also marks the beginning of registration time for the 2015-16 school year for those
communities that have a Catholic school.
