Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to Him.
Ps. 95:1-2
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dt 18: 15-20; Ps 95: 1-2, 6-9; 1 Cor 7: 32-35; Mk 1: 21-28
In Jesus’s first visit to a synagogue in Mark’s
Gospel, we encounter a key theme in this
evangelist’s writing: Jesus’s authority. This is
evidenced both in His words — “the people were
astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as
one having authority” (v22) — and in the exorcism of
the unclean spirit. Unlike other exorcists of His day,
who used many words while performing exorcisms,
Jesus commands the unclean spirit with just two
words in the Greek text, and it leaves. The brevity of His command
illustrates His power over the spirit.
In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses promises the people that in
the future God will send “a prophet like me” (v 15) . . . This desire for
an intermediary between the Lord and the people is based on their
experience of God’s great power on Mount Sinai, mediated through
Moses. The people believe that to experience God face to face is to
risk death. God promises to “raise up for them a prophet . . . [who]
shall tell them all that I command” (v18). Over the centuries, this
prophetic figure came to be understood as the longed-for Messiah.
Paul continues to advise the Corinthians with the expectation of
Christ’s imminent second coming, as we heard last week. His advice
to the unmarried, that they should refrain from marrying, is based on
the idea that one who is unmarried can dedicate more time to serving
the Lord . . . [F]ocusing on the things of God is advisable . . . [We] can
follow Paul’s advice by making sure our lives have a sense of balance
between worldly affairs and the things of God.
For reflection: in what ways have I experienced Jesus’s authority?
Have I ever experienced God’s liberating power in my life or in the life
of another?
CANDLEMASS
February 2, 2015,
Candles that will be used in St. Gregory
the Great Liturgical celebrations
throughout the year will be blessed on
Monday, February 2. We invite parishioners to bring their personal candles
that they might use for home shrines or
family religious celebrations to be blessed at this time.
Feast of St. Blaise
Tuesday, February 3, 2015
It is an ancient tradition to bless throats
on this day. The blessing will be given at
the 8 A.M. Mass.
St. Blaise's protection of those with
throat troubles apparently comes from a
tradition that a boy was brought to him who
had a fishbone stuck in his throat. The boy
was about to die when St. Blaise healed
him.
Prayer: St Blaise, pray for us that we may not suffer from
illnesses of the throat, and pray that all who are suffering
be healed by God's love. Amen

Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament
extends and enhances the spirit of prayer we
experience together in the Mass. It deepens
our union with Jesus, Who in turn blesses us
with His peace in our lives, our families, and
our world.

Ministry for Priestly Formation
Merciful
CALLED TO BE
The future of our local Church is strengthened
by the number of men who answer the call to
a priestly vocation. We are blessed with a rich
heritage of men who have given their lives to
the service of our Church. Their living example
of Jesus Christ in our midst, as teacher, father,
friend, and brother, has enriched us with their
sacrifice and dedication to Our Lord.
“There is no greater happiness
than being called to
priesthood and to bring His
word and mercy to others.”
— Pope Francis
The responsibility, spiritually and financially,
of providing sufficient priests for the Church
belongs to all of us. We are currently
supporting 14 seminarians thanks to the
support of the Annual Catholic Appeal. This
year we ordained three priests and one
transitional deacon.
Our Office for Priestly Formation administers
the diocesan program for both pre-seminarian
and seminarian candidates and is located at
the St. Francis Center on the University of San
Diego campus. As a house of formation, St.
Francis Center, helps prepare men in each of
the four areas of formation: human, spiritual,
intellectual, and pastoral for admission to a
seminary school of theology.
Those who are called to priestly service touch
all our lives, the lives of our family members,
neighbors, friends, and our entire communities.
Our parishes have benefited from their
leadership and guidance. Our communities have
been inspired by their presence, demonstrating
that living the life of Christ daily is possible.
“Amen, I say to you,
whatever you did for one
of these least brothers
of mine, you did for me.”

2015 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL | DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO
— MATTHEW 25:40
Assistance for Catholic Education
Our diocese includes a network of many
wonderful Catholic schools, educating more
than 15,000 students each year. Most of our
schools are in great shape, while other schools
truly need our support.
Merciful
CALLED TO BE
The Annual Catholic Appeal currently provides
some funding to 8 schools in need, impacting
the lives of over 1,700 students.
This program is called Assistance for Catholic
Education. Over the past ten years with the
support of the Annual Catholic Appeal, Catholic
schools in San Diego have received assistance
grants totaling more than five million dollars!
These grants have been made to keep the vital
mission of Catholic education both accessible
and affordable for children of families living
in neighborhoods that have been the most
impacted by economic challenges.
Our entire community will always be grateful
for the support we receive from the Annual
Catholic Appeal,” said Gina Olsen, principal
of St. Rita School. “As an urban school with
financial pressures, it helps us support our
teachers and, without it, our doors would
be closed.”
Our beloved Bishop Flores shared with us a
beautiful vision for Catholic education in our
diocese. He said, “The role our Catholic schools
play in educating and forming the faith of our
children continues to be invaluable today.
Not only will these children become the Church
of tomorrow, but they will also fill the most
important roles in leadership and ministry as
the Church reaches out to the world.”
Your support of the Annual Catholic Appeal
helps us make our vision a reality for Catholic
education making it accessible to those in need
right here in the Diocese of San Diego.

whatever you did for one
of these least brothers
of mine, you did for me.”

2015 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL | DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO
Restorative Justice and Detention Ministry
Jesus said, “I was in prison and you visited me.
What you did for the least of these you did for me.”
Restorative Justice focuses on harms committed
and making the offender accountable to the
victim and the community, and to bring about
transformation of all parties.
There are many components including
Detention Ministry, Victim/Offender Dialogue,
reentry practices, victim support, and support
for the families of the incarcerated. These
are corporal works of mercy; ministries
of presence, compassion, hope, and love.
Compassion, hope, and love flow out of our
presence – by being there for them.
We impact the lives of those imprisoned in 27
different prisons, jails, and detention facilities,
housing over 25,000 inmates. This includes
eight sheriff’s jails, five juvenile detention
facilities, three state prisons, and four federal
detention facilities. Many of these inmates are
hungry to deepen their relationship with God.
We merely become the conduits, or channels,
of the Holy Spirit.
Our diocese supports twelve chaplains to say
Mass, administer the sacraments, and visit
inmates individually. We provide assistance to
300 Catholic volunteers to conduct scripture,
prayer and discussion services. More than 60%
of our volunteers have never volunteered for
anything else in the Church.
Merciful
CALLED TO BE
This ministry of compassion, hope, and love is
possible thanks to the support of the Annual
Catholic Appeal. This is our special opportunity
to transform lives on a person-to-person level.
“For I was in prison,
and you visited me”.
