Parental Notification Petition In California, a girl under the age of 18 can’t get a cavity filled by a dentist or an aspirin dispensed by the school nurse without a parent knowing about it. But a physician’s assistant, nurse or midwife can perform surgery on a young girl without ever informing a parent. This is how as many as 20,000 abortions are done in the state of California each year. It has been proven that abortions decline up to 28% when parental notification is required. We’re asking for your help gathering the nearly 600,000 valid signatures needed to qualify this initiative for the 2016 ballot. Signature gathering starts next weekend on Jason’s Plaza. Please stop by a table to register to vote (if needed), sign the petition, and take home a form to have as many family and friends sign it also. Pope Francis encourages us not only to open our own hearts, minds and souls to God's love and mercy but also to be instruments of God's love and mercy in the world: “In this Holy Year, we look forward to the experience of opening our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society: fringes which modern society itself creates. How many uncertain and painful situations there are in the world today! ...During this Jubilee, the Church will be called even more to heal these wounds, to assuage them with the oil of consolation, to bind them with mercy and cure them with solidarity and vigilant care... Let us open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help! May we reach out to them and support them so they can feel the warmth of our presence, our friendship, and our fraternity! May their cry become our own, and together may we break down the barriers of indifference that too often reign supreme and mask our hypocrisy and egoism!” [The entire article may be found on our parish web site: www.olglahabra.org] First Friday Friars A Catholic Men’s Organization Mass, lunch and guest speaker each First Friday of the month. Page 7 Jubilee Year of Mercy Third Sunday in Ordinary Time When he announced this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis highlighted today’s Gospel episode, in which Jesus proclaims in his hometown synagogue his Spiritanointed mission to fulfill the promises of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus’ mission then, says Pope Francis, is our mission now as Jesus’ disciples this Jubilee Year of Mercy: to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord, a year of God’s mercy. Pope Francis challenges us to translate Jesus’ mission to contemporary needs: to console by word and deed those materially or spiritually poor, to liberate those bound by modern society’s new forms of slavery, to open the eyes of those blinded by their own self-interest, and to restore human dignity to all those from whom it has been stolen.
