St. Bede 103 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2015 A Message from your Pastor Scripture Readings Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 8, 2015 My Dear Parishioners, N ext weekend February 7 and 8 is the official kick-off of the 2015 annual Catholic Charities Appeal. Taking care of the neediest in our area is one of the most important things we can do. I recall what the great Saint Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians: "There are three great virtues - they are faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" By now, all households in the parish should have received the official mailing from the Archdiocesan Appeal office. Catholic Charities Appeal provides education, shelter, clothes and medical assistance, etc. to the one-third of Philadelphia's population and beyond who live below the poverty line. These people rely on our generosity for a hot meal, a warm place to sleep and a safe place to learn. It is important that every parishioner and parish do their part to help raise the $10 million which is this year's 2015 goal. Here is how our parish did in last year's appeal: our parish goal was $87,652. We contributed 546 gifts, which totaled $83,967, or 96 percent of our goal! The goal for Saint Bede Parish for the 2015 Appeal remains the same. Personally this is my favorite charity, because I know that the funds go directly to those most in need, through very well-run programs. Please join my own personal donation with yours, so that this year, we reach 100 percent of our goal. I want to also invite you to attend the next event on our 50th Anniversary calendar, when we celebrate the marriages and future marriages of Saint Bede Parish on Saint Valentine's Day, Saturday Feb. 14. The festivities begin with the celebration of the 5:30 p.m. Vigil Mass. After the homily, I will have the couples stand, and those who are married will renew their vows, while those who are engaged will receive a blessing. At the end of the Mass, a couple will be chosen (perhaps the one married the longest) to present flowers at the Blessed Mother altar on behalf of everyone. By the way, you don't have to be currently married or engaged to attend. All are welcome to the Mass and to enjoy the Dinner-Dance afterwards. Details can be found in today's parish bulletin. What a great way to celebrate Saint Valentine's Day, in true Saint Bede's style! Job 7: 7-4, 6-7 Psalm 147 1 Corinthians 9: 16-19, 22-23 Mark 1: 29-39 The Gospel of Mark makes it clear: we are meant for service. As soon as Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law, she begins to serve. And Jesus, who would rather rest Himself, works every day and all hours healing and preaching. What a contrast to Job, who complains of his life’s drudgery! As we hear God’s word, how are you being called out of your drudgery into service? Adoration Chapel Altar Candle Dedication Feb. 2 - 8 For H. Nancy Rovito (2nd anniversary) Req. by the Pasternak family Dedications are being taken for 2015! Just come into the Parish Office. Candle dedications are a $30 donation for the week. Remember The Deceased Joanne Niemann, Kevin Hunt, Jack McLaughlin We are united in prayer with their families and with one another as we and all the faithful departed await our rising with the Lord. Welcome Our New Parishioners Ms. Bonnie Beairsto James Mariano & Amanda Lipsett Natalie Hartman family Help Us Prepare for Ash Wednesday Blessed palm which was distributed last Palm Sunday is collected and burned, to make the ashes to be used on the following Ash Wednesday. We will be collecting old palm after Sunday Mass on Feb. 8 and 15, to prepare for this year’s Ash Wednesday on Feb. 18. You can deposit your old palm in the baskets, conveniently located in the back of the church. Thank you for your support. May God Bless You, February 1, 2015 2 St. Bede 103 Save the Date: St. Bede Parishioners Walk in Washington St. Bede the Venerable In celebration of our 50th Anniversary Presents Steve Ray Saturday, March 14 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the church Steve Ray, along with his wife Janet, Ray are the producers of the Catholic DVD series The Footprints of God: The Story of Salvation from Abraham to Augustine which are featured on EWTN and NETFLIX. Steve is the best selling author of numerous books including Crossing the Tiber, the story of his conversion to the Catholic Church. Admission: Free! (Free Will Offering) Refreshments will be sold in the cafeteria between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Steve Ray will address the topics of today that matter to practicing Catholics like: + How do we keep our children in the Church when so many are influenced by today’s culture that sees the Church as an obstacle to freedom, and its teachings as irrelevant or out of touch with the modern world? A full bus filled with parishioners joined Father Loomis and people from around the country last week to participate in the Walk for Life demonstration in Washington DC. The Walk for Life peacefully protests the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, legalizing abortion. ST. BEDE’S WOMEN’S CLUB Monthly Meeting Wednesday, Feb. 11 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. CAFETERIA Catholic Charities Appeal Kicks off Feb. 8-9 Dear Friends, Our guest speaker will be cardiologist Dr. Deirdre Walsh Donaghy, MD. She will be giving a 30 minute slide presentation and answering questions on heart health. She is well known by many of our parishioners. She will be speaking about women’s heart health and the differences between women’s and men’s heart attack symptoms. Please plan to come to this very informative meeting and bring a friend. This very important information could save a life one day. As always, your dessert donation are appreciated. Hope, like Faith, is a gift from God. The poor, the sick, the homeless, the vulnerable can’t give themselves hope. But, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you can. The 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal is a wonderful opportunity to share your blessings with the least fortunate among us. St. Paul, the co-patron of our archdiocesan basilica, tells us that the three most precious virtues are Faith, Hope and Love. They’re deeply interconnected. We live our Faith when we show Love to those most in need. And in showing that Love, we bring them Hope. Your past generosity gives me great confidence that Christ will once again bestow his grace on our community of Faith. And that your donation to the 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal, motivated by Love, may continue to GIVE HOPE. This week we will celebrate the Presentation of the Lord, the day when Mary & Joseph offer Jesus to God as proclaimed by Jewish law. With this feast we look back toward Christmas… as Mary and Joseph bring the infant to the temple… and forward to Lent as Simeon tells Mary “and a sword shall pierce your heart.” Are we as ready to embrace the suffering Christ as we were to welcome the baby in the manger? The CDs, books and booklets in the display in our vestibule offer easy ways to “ready” our hearts. Check them out today! Thank you for your generous donations that help to support the mission of Stewardship: A Mission of Faith and Lighthouse Catholic Media to “feed hungry hearts.” Gratefully yours in Christ, CD Highlight: “The new Conversation” Book or Booklet Hightlight: “My Sisters the Saints” February 1, 2015 3 St. Bede 103 Open House at SKD School Principal’s Corner Dear Parishioners, As we end yet another Catholic Schools week, I presented our school parents with a powerful article written by a parent who explained why she sends her children to Catholic school. The following powerful quote sums up the article and describes our school: “Our Catholic school is more than just a school, it is a deeply invested community. A community. And in a world grown increasingly cold and harsh, a community of faith and warmth is an immeasurably important springboard in these young kids lives. And in ours. Undoubtedly, this school prepares the mind. But by God, it prepares the soul as well." Please view the full article which is posted on our school’s Facebook page. Thank you for your participation in our celebration last week. We will have an Open House on Monday Feb. 2 from 9:30-11:30 since last week’s was canceled due to the weather. If you haven’t already, I invite you to visit us and see for yourself just how Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic School is a true community of faith, knowledge, and service! Thank you for all of your support and prayers! SKD School Student Ambassadors Cady and Kathryn handed out Open House “passports” to the visitors. Each classroom was decorated to represent different countries in recognition of the upcoming World Meeting of Families. Sincerely, Ms. Laura Clark Principal, St. Katharine Drexel School (www.skdschool.org / 215-357-4720) Visitors were entertained by our award winning choir and band! February 1, 2015 4 St. Bede 103 SKD School Walk for Life Young At Heart Seniors The St. Bede Young at Heart Seniors group meets every first and third Thursday of the month. The next meeting is Feb. 5 at 11:30 a.m., in the Drexel Center. For more information, call Betty Novobilski at 215-322-1120. Once again, Saint Katharine Drexel School showed its solidarity with the folks in Washington, DC by participating in its own Walk for Life. The students, teachers and parents walked through the neighborhood to peacefully protest the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, and received lots of support from neighbors and motorists. (Photos by Lisa James) Discernment Retreat February 13-15, 2015 Friday 6PM - Sunday 1PM Villa Maria House of Studies Young women (18-35) are invited to join us for this retreat which focuses on the IHM Charism and the importance of listening to God's call and discovering the many ways that God speaks to us. Time will be included for personal and communal prayer as well as the opportunity to interact with the sisters in Formation. (Contact: [email protected] or 610-889-1553) Students proudly carried the Saint Katharine Drexel banner. Many students carried hand-made signs showing their support for the sanctity of life. (above and below). February 1, 2015 5 St. Bede 103 On to Italy! Religious Education Dear Parishioners, I have been hearing a lot of "doublespeak" lately. Do you know what "doublespeak" is? The dictionary defines "doublespeak" as a deliberate attempt to disguise the truth. It is language which makes the bad seem good, the negative seem positive and the unpleasant seem attractive. Words such as "marriage," "conservatism," bigotry," and "tolerance" no longer have universal meaning. When confusion replaces clarity, the devil breaks out the champagne. It's so easy to manipulate people when the stop signs are edited to say "whatever." Spirits were high last week for Monsignor Marine and the rest of the traveling party as they boarded the bus on Wednesday, bound for JFK Airport and then to Italy. The group will visit Taormino, Rome and Siena, culminating with participation at the Feast of the Madonna de Soccorso in Sciacca, Sicily. Have you experienced any of these "doublespeak" examples? "It's an opportunity to succeed on a test" = cheating "Failure to reach their wellness potential" = death "Deferred success" = failure "Downsizing" = firing people "Pre-emptive strike" = unprovoked attack "Enhanced interrogation" = torture "Pro-choice" = willing to kill the unborn Adoration Society Some people may want to join the Adoration Society but feel that they cannot commit to an hour every week. Why not consider becoming a prayer partner? This commitment is usually two times a month instead of every week. It is a great way to get involved and join the Adoration Society without a weekly commitment. Our current prayer partner hours of need are as follows: Monday 4AM & 4PM, Wednesday 3AM and Friday 5AM. Our ultimate goal is to have two adorers for every hour so if these hours are impossible for you due to your schedule, please contact us to arrange a more convenient time. We can accommodate every schedule. For more information about perpetual adoration please contact Debbie & Sean McDermott at 215-504-9897 or e-mail us at [email protected]. What can the average person do about doublespeak? I found a doublespeak home page on the internet, it recommends asking the following questions about any language of persuasion being received: 1. Who is speaking to whom? 2. Under what conditions? 3. Under what circumstances? 4. With what intent? 5. With what results? If you cannot answer all these questions with ease, or if you feel uncomfortable with the answers, or if you cannot determine any answer to them, you are probably dealing with doublespeak. You had better be prepared to delve deeper, or if you are sending the message, you'd better think about cleaning it up a bit. "Say what you mean and mean what you say." Let us keep each other in prayer. Cornerstone for Life Partner With the “Silent No More Awareness” Campaign God Bless, Carole Obrokta Director of Religious Education (DRE) At www.SilentNoMoreAwareness.org, you can partner with the world's largest movement of women and men who have lost children to abortion. By doing so, you can spread the word that healing and forgiveness are available to those who have had abortions. An individual, organization, or church can "partner" with the campaign and thereby: ● Promote the opportunities for healing. ● Use the testimonies (text, audio, and video) of those who have had abortions, to awaken others to the devastation it brings and to the healing Christ brings. ● Invite men and women who are willing to share their abortion testimony to do so at gatherings, in churches, on radio and TV, or in private meetings with legislators and others. ● Invite those who have lost children to abortion to go to IRegretMyAbortion.com and indicate, anonymously if they prefer, that they regret their abortions. This creates a large chorus of viruses showing the damage abortion does. (215-357-2130) February 1, 2015 6 St. Bede 103 All Are Welcome to the Celebration!
