LORD’S DAY MORNING WORSHIP Lost Pilgrims Found February 1, 2015 11 AM Order for the Worship of the Lord Italics are read by the congregation. * Please stand Prelude Music All I Have is Christ *Opening Anthem of Praise and Preparation Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah *Call to Worship: From Psalm 146 Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful forever. *Invocation and *Lord’s Prayer: Matthew 6:10-14 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever, AMEN. *Affirming the Faith: Heidelberg Catechism 1 What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that all things must work together for my salvation, and, therefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready from now on to live unto Him. *Songs of Praise and Thanksgiving How High and How Wide There is Grace for Me Jesus, Thank You Community Announcements OT Reading: Genesis 32:1-12 Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim. 3 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’” 6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” 7 In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.” 9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’ 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’” Confession of Sin from Jeremiah 3 and Luke 15 Merciful God and Father, we acknowledge our guilt. We have rebelled against you our Lord, and have scattered our favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed you. Since our youth, shameful gods have consumed the fruits of our father’s labor. We lie down in our shame. Pastor: Return, faithless Israel, declares the Lord, I will frown on you no longer, for I am merciful, declares the Lord, I will not be angry forever. Return to me, declares the Lord, for I am your husband. How gladly would I treat you like sons and give you a desirable land, and I will cure you of backsliding. Silent confession of Sin Pastoral Prayer Offering Gifts of Money *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise him above ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost: AMEN *Prayer to Dedicate Gifts and Money Sermon Text: Luke 15:1-3, 11-19 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” 3 Then Jesus told them this parable… 11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 When he came to his senses, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’” Prayer for Illumination Sermon: A Plan from a Pit Prayer of Dedication Lord’s Supper Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried, He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. AMEN *Song of Response Grace Greater than All Our Sin *Benediction: from Hebrews 13 20 Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
