WELCOME AND OPENING PRAYER
CONGREGATIONAL LIFE
Holy Is the Lord
We stand and lift up our hands
For the joy of the Lord is our strength
We bow down and worship Him now
How great, how awesome is He
And together we sing
Refrain: Holy is the Lord God Almighty
The earth is filled with His glory
Holy is the Lord God Almighty
The earth is filled with His glory
The earth is filled with His glory
Repeat
Bridge: It's rising up all around
It's the anthem of the Lord's renown
Repeat
And together we sing,
Everyone sing
Refrain
Come People of the Risen King
Come, people of the risen King / Who delight to bring Him praise
Come all and tune your hearts to sing / To the morning star of grace
From the shifting shadows of the earth / We will lift our eyes to Him
Where steady arms of mercy reach / To gather children in
Refrain: Rejoice, rejoice
Let every tongue rejoice
One heart one voice
Oh, church of Christ rejoice
Come those whose joy is morning sun / And those weeping through the night
Come those who tell of battles won / And those struggling in the fight
For His perfect love will never change / And His mercies never cease
But follow us through all our days / With the certain hope of peace [Refrain]
Come, young and old from every land / Men and women of the faith
Come those with full or empty hands / Find the riches of His grace
Over all the world His people sing / Shore to shore we hear them call
The truth that cries through every age / Our God is all in all
[Refrain]
Here I Am to Worship
Light of the world / You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes, let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You
Refrain: Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
King of all days / Oh so highly exalted
Glorious in Heaven above
Humbly You came to the earth You created
All for love's sake became poor
[Refrain]
Bridge:
I’ll never know how much it cost / To see my sin upon that cross (x3)
Refrain



Country of the Week: Sierra Leone Pray for this first West African
country to be evangelized (1758 first Protestant church). Pray especially for
seminaries and bible colleges and the critical need of biblically trained
pastors and leaders. Pray for outreach to all peoples –over 60% of the
population are Muslims.
Persecuted church: Syria As Syria approaches the fourth anniversary
of its ongoing civil war, the situation becomes more dire in Aleppo. Babies
and elderly are dying in the sub-zero temperatures, which people must try to
survive without any form of heating. Pray for those who seek to help
including aid-workers and doctors and ask the Lord to bring about peace and
righteousness in Syria and throughout the region.
OFFERING: Behold the Lamb
Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away
Slain for us; and we remember
The promise made that all who come in faith
Find forgiveness at the cross
Refrain: So we share in this bread of life / And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of peace / Around the table of the King
The body of our Saviour Jesus Christ
Torn for you eat and remember
The wounds that heal the death that brings us life
Paid the price to make us one


To respond and to remember
Our call to follow in the steps of Christ
As His body here on earth

Continue to pray for the Lord to use the current preaching series on ‘Living
Like Jesus – The Beatitudes for Today’. Ask the Lord to help us
understand what it is to be joyful mourners, to hate and weep over all that
Jesus hates and to love all that Jesus loves in our world, our work and His
church.
SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 5: 1-12
SERMON: ‘Are You a Joyful Mourner?’

Restore unto me, the joy of Thy salvation / And renew a right spirit within me.
Continue to remember all whom you know who are battling physically and
emotionally. Remember Angela Friesen and family in challenging days
and all seeking to comfort her and her family. Continue to pray for Denise

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION
MAT 5: 1-12 (4)
‘ARE YOU A JOYFUL MOURNER?’
We live in a world that loves to laugh. Even as Christians we prefer a misery-free life to a
life with misery, then comfort. What mourning leads to joy? Why must we have it?
1.
2.
1) WHAT IS THE MOURNING JESUS DOES NOT HAVE IN MIND?

We all experience natural grief but not all grief ends in comfort
3.

We often tumble into sinful grief, none of which brings comfort
4.
Judas hated his sin, even grieved over the guilt and pain it brought (Mat. 27:3-4). Such grief led to
despair because he ran from Jesus and not to Him.
MISSIONARIES OF THE WEEK
Ken and Laura TUCKER
2) WHAT IS GOSPEL GRIEF AND MOURNFUL JOY?

You will mourn over your sinful state and ragged righteousness (Rom. 7: 20)
Do your mourn that there is a self-righteousness in all of us that does not want to die; that feels special
when we are on the inside and others excluded?

You will mourn over the tragic state of the world and the church (Acts 17:6)
“For the love of crowds, we have allowed African traditional religion to enter the church through the back door. Like
the Arabian camel, it has since kicked out the truth.”
(Pastor Conrad Mbewe, Kabwata Baptist church, Zambia)

You will mourn over what all sin has done to Jesus
Contrast Peter with Judas. Peter’s grief ended in joy; it led to repentance and running to Jesus whose
love paid for his sin.
“The gospel creates the only kind of grief over sin which is clean and which does not crush.”
Ken and Laura Tucker are involved in discipling young musicians and providing
resources and training for the worship ministry in Romanian evangelical churches.
They do this through their work with the Jubilate Foundation and their service in
First Baptist Church in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. They write:
Dear Friends at IBC,
We are so blessed! We are so blessed to be able
♫ to encourage and sharpen those who make God's glory and the gospel of His Son known
through song (like the 125 who came to last year's summer course or the 22 who took part in the
♫
(Tim Keller)
♫
3) WHAT CAN JOYFUL MOURNERS EXPECT?

All God is, is the comfort for your life
‘… I with body and soul , both in life and death, am not my own but belong unto my faithful Jesus Christ (whose
precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins) and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves
me, that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head.”
(Heidelberg Catechism – Answer to Question 1 , What is the only comfort in life and death?)

All God promises will be your comfort in death (Rev. 21:4)
‘We are in the land of the dying trying to get to the land of the living’. Joyful mourners can grieve with joy – this
world is not your home
Remember! Jesus loved you so much that He did more than mourn over your sin, He died for it.
Mourn your sin and rejoice in that comfort.
A voice recording of the preached sermon is accessible on the church website www.ibcbrussels.org.

Can Christians enjoy life? Can we do so without grief or tears? How does the first beatitude
about being poor in spirit relate to the second beatitude about mourning?
What are some of the legitimate issues in the world we ought to mourn over? Can you identify
some characters in the Bible who lived with this sense of godly mourning? (See Jer.13:17;
2 Pet.2:17–18) What do you normally grieve over in your life? Mourning over our sin can
produce in us fear or condemnation. How can we help each other if this happens?
What would you expect to see in someone who is a joyful mourner? How if we mourn joyfully
should this affect the way we use our time and resources to bring hope?
If the Christian life is not a life of misery, how can you keep yourself from
self-righteousness and be a person who mourns without being miserable?

with here in our own church).
to stimulate Romanian believers to sing a new song to our Lord, like the 20 who participated in
the song-writing workshop last October, or those who sent in over 40 songs to the song-writing
"competition" organized by Jubilate.
to put new worship or teaching songs in the hands of the Romanian church, like the seven
presented in the celebration of Romanian songs last October, or the many others (Romanian
and international) being worked on for the second volume of the Jubilate hymnal. The Evening of
Romanian hymns at the completion of the "competition" was a special time of worship.
to make music to the Lord ourselves, to sing His glory before this people, as in the Messiah
