Celebration of Holy Communion
Ordination and Installation of Officers
Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.
This morning we celebrate the Eucharist (the sacrament of the Lord’s
Supper, or Holy Communion) by intinction (dipping the bread into the
cup). We also provide a gluten-free alternative. After receiving the
elements you may come to the railing to receive a blessing from the
pastors.
Prayer of Preparation
God of compassion, you have shown us in Christ that your love is neverending. Enable us to love you with all our hearts and to worship you in
gladness this day!

Prayer of Confession
Rev. Clover Beal
Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in
thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we
have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart
and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbor as
ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us
amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may
delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy
name.

Today Is Hunger Sunday
Any cash or checks in envelopes marked Hunger will be used 100% for
support of hunger programs. Each month we send the money to the Hts
Emergency Food Cupboard (Disciples Church, Cleveland Hts.), the New
Covenant Lutheran Church Hunger Center (East Cleveland), and the
Presbyterian Hunger Program in Haiti.
Today’s Music
Continuing our year-long series of celebrating American composers, the
Chancel Choir will sing music composed and arranged by Moses
Hogan today and for the next two Sundays. Hogan (1957-2003) is best
known for his settings of African-American spirituals; there are several
published compilations of his work. He was awarded a full scholarship to
the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he studied piano; he then went
to The Julliard School in NYC for graduate studies.
Petitions for the People
All are welcome to bring their personal prayer requests for inclusion in
Forest Hill Church’s community worship offering, Petitions for The
People. Praying in community, we will represent the Body of Christ,
connecting each other more closely to God, ourselves and the Forest Hill
Church community. Private prayers will be offered individually and
confidentially in the Chapel immediately after worship today. Please
gather quietly outside the Chapel until you are called.
Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let
them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call
the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in
the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick
person well; the Lord will raise them up. - James 5:13-15

Prayer Valentines
Visit the Children’s Ministry bulletin board during February and take a
heart or two off the tree. Each heart will have the name of a child who is
in one of the Children’s Ministry programs, and a scripture verse to use in
prayer for that child. What better way to share the love of Christ than
through prayer?

Sharing Stories: The Spiritual Practice of Testimony
Lenten Dinner Groups Return
Building deep relationships is at the core of Christian community. Every
aspect of Christian mission begins with personal relationships. We have
to practice telling our faith stories, giving testimony to how God is
working in our lives, and listening to others.
Following the pattern set last year, this Lent will provide opportunities for
all to participate in a small dinner group hosted at the home of a FHC
member. Each participant will be in the same dinner group each of the
two evenings:
Friday, Feb. 27 and Friday, March 13 or
Saturday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 14
All will be encouraged in a safe way to share a bit of their life journey.
Please let Clover or John know of your interest in either hosting a dinner
group of 8-10 persons or being part of a dinner group. Last year over 80
people participated. Our goal is 100 for this year!
Should be fun: good fun and drink, fellowship, sharing. You will meet
new people, feel more connected to our church family, and grow in your
comfort in speaking about matters of faith.

The Lesson
James 4: 1-8, 11-12
Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do
they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? You want
something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet
something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts.
You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive,
because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your
pleasures. Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is
enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world
becomes an enemy of God. Or do you suppose that it is for nothing that
the scripture says, “God yearns jealously for the spirit that he has made
to dwell in us”? But he gives all the more grace; therefore it says, “God
opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves
therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to
God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and
purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers and sisters. Whoever
speaks evil against another or judges another, speaks evil against the law
and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law
but a judge. There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to
destroy. So who, then, are you to judge your neighbor?
Next Sunday: The scriptures from the Revised Standard Lectionary are
Isaiah 40: 21-31; Psalm 147: 1-11, 20c; 1 Corinthians 9: 16-23; Mark 1:
29-39. The Kerygma text is James 5.
