The anthem
“Beautiful Savior”
is a 2014 setting of
the beloved hymn.
The text is an
English translation
of the German
hymn“ Schönster
Herr Jesu” from
the 1677 Münster
Gesangbuch. The
hymn is included
in over one hundred
hymnals in multiple
languages. The
tune, often called
Crusader’s Hymn,
is a Silesian folk
song from the
1842 Schlesische
Volkslieder. The tune
name is derived from
apocryphal stories
that the text and tune
date back to the 12th
century crusades.
The delicate choral
setting was written
by contemporary
American composer
Michael Burkhardt.

Beautiful Savior arr. M. Burkhardt
Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son
of Man! Truly I'd love thee, truly I'd serve thee, light of
my soul, my joy, my crown. Fair are the meadows, fair
are the woodlands, robed in flowers of blooming spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, he makes our sorrowing
spirits sing. Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,
bright the sparkling stars on high; Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shine purer than all the angels in the sky.
THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED
TO STAND AND SING.
Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations, Son of God and
Son of Man! Glory and honor, praise, adoration, now
and forevermore be thine!

I Survey the
Wondrous Cross” is

text by English
hymnist Isaac
Watts. The 1824
tune was written by
American composer
Lowell Mason and
was inspired by the
simple patterns of
Gregorian Chant.
The choral setting
was written by
American composer
Gilbert M. Martin
for the 1968
commencement
ceremony of
Westminster Choir
College in Princeton
New Jersey and
has be sung at every
commencement since.

When I Survey the Wondrous Crossarr. G.M. Martin
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince
of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour
contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should
boast, save in the death of Christ, my God. All the vain
things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love
flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm
of nature mine, that were a present far too small; Love,
so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!
Amen!

Our varied gifts united, by Christ, the Lord of all.
