law. Meet these two remarkable sisters, and rejoice in how God takes
care of those with faithful hearts.
Dear Friends in Christ,
There is a powerful story in the Book of Acts that describes the conversion of St. Paul. The ninth chapter begins:
Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club – Wanda Brunstetter
Join the club of unlikely quilters who show up for Amish widow
Emma Yoder’s quilting classes. A troubled young woman, a
struggling couple, a widower, a rough and tough biker, and a
preacher’s wife make up the mismatched lot. But as their problems
begin to bind them together like the scraps of fabric stitched together
in a quilt, they learn to open up and lend a helping hand. Is this what
God had in mind to heal hurting hearts and create beauty from
fragments?
A Step of Faith – Richard Paul Evans
After the death of his beloved wife, after the loss of his advertising
business to his once-trusted partner, after bankruptcy forced him from
his home, Alan Christoffersen is a broken man. Leaving everything he
knows, he sets out on an extraordinary cross-country journey; with
only the pack on his back, he is walking from Seattle to Key West—
the end of the map. Along the way, Alan begins to heal, meeting
people who teach him lessons about love, sacrifice, and forgiveness.
In this Book 4 of the “Walk” series, Alan faces another life-changing
crisis, and now the journey is in jeopardy.
Wild Prairie Roses – Lena Nelson Dooley
Join a quest for lost Civil War gold in the small town of Browning
City, Iowa, where three women find a treasure worth far more than
currency. Constance Miller comes to town on her father's dying
request, only to walk right into a mystery. Tara Young's quest for gold
is met with heavy competition. Lily Reese discovers her quiet town is
hiding a deep and dangerous mystery. Will the men who come
alongside them lead them deeper into danger or be the answer to their
prayers?
“Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the
Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might
bring them bound to Jerusalem.”
While on the road to Damascus, Paul was surrounded by a light that flashed
around him and he fell to the ground. Jesus spoke to Paul at that moment and
asked why he had been persecuting him. Temporarily blinded, Paul was instructed
to continue his journey to Damascus . He was led by the hand to a follower of the
Way named Ananias, who at the Lord's command baptized Paul and fed him. Paul
stayed a few days with the disciples in Damascus, but was soon traveling to synagogues to proclaim the good news “Jesus is the Son of God.”
Paul had been walking his own path, passionate for God, but not walking in the
true Way that God had revealed. Paul needed a time of repentance and renewal to
redirect his walk, and set him on the true path again. Although we may not experience such a dramatic turn around, the season of Lent is intended as a time for us to
encounter Jesus, repent, and find ourselves renewed in our walk of faith.
One of the disciplines of Lent that we offer at Zion is our Wednesday evening
worship. We sing the beautiful setting “Holden Evening Prayer,” and hear scripture and pray. During our gatherings I will be preaching a sermon series entitled
“Follow the Way.” I am basing the topics on a daily prayer book that we will make
available to everyone before Lent begins. Author Susan Senechal includes a Bible
verse and prayer for each day of Lent. Take time each day of Lent to read a prayer
from this booklet to remember that the way Christ lived and died for us transforms
the way we live our lives for him. I will be developing the weekly themes she introduces with my preaching. The weekly themes are:
Ash Wednesday: The Way of Forgiveness
Week 1: The Way of Prayer
Week 2: The Way of Servanthood
Week 3: The Way of Sacrifice
Week 4: The Way of Compassion
Week 5: The Way of Humility
Palm Sunday: The Way of Obedience
Come join us throughout the Lenten season as we renew our walk along the Way.
Yours in Christ, Pastor Roux

ASH WEDNESDAY
Ashes will mark our foreheads with a crossshaped smudge on Ash
Wednesday. They remind us that we are part of Jesus’ story, his death
on the cross and his resurrection. We are first marked with the sign of
the cross on our foreheads at the time of our baptism, telling us that
every day is to be crossshaped, dying to old sinful ways and rising to
live a new life with God. The disciplines of such a life are almsgiving,
fasting, and prayer. Lent developed as the time for those preparing for
baptism at the Easter Vigil to make these disciplines a part of their
lives. All the baptized are encouraged to keep these disciplines during
Lent. We begin Lent with the liturgy on February 18th at 7:00 p.m.
JOIN US FOR WEDNESDAYS IN LENT
Our evenings begin at 6:00 pm in the basement Social Hall.
+ SOUP AND SANDWICH
This simple meal joins us in fellowship and reminds us
of the fasting that is a part of our Lenten discipline.
Committees of Zion provide the food we share.
+WORSHIP
We will gather in the nave at 7:00 pm for Holden Evening
Prayer.

LIBRARY NOTES
“There have never been, nor are there now, too many good books.”
~~ Martin Luther
Christian Fiction Book Swap
Winter is here, and so is the snow and cold. What better time to pick
up an inspirational novel before heading home from church and curl
up with a blanket and a good book. Try one of the titles from our
new book swap located on the adult reading shelves in the narthex.
Take home a book to read or bring in a book to share. If you really
enjoyed one of these titles, write a review to entice others to read it,
too. Here is a sampling of what we have to offer to warm your heart
on a cold winter day.
Coming Home: a Story of Undying Hope – Karen Kingsbury
The Baxter family is looking forward to a family reunion the likes of
which they haven't seen in years. But, before the big day, the
unthinkable happens. Now the Baxter Family gathers to share
memories while waiting and praying: memories that bring both
healing and hope. Before all is said and done, each of them will be
forever changed and drawn closer to God and each other.
Faithful Heart – Al Lacy
Dottie Harper fears for her children's safety. Her husband, Jerrod, is
struggling with dementia brought on by shell shock during the Civil
War. It's as though there are two Jerrods locked inside him: the
tender and loving Christian man she married, and a harsh man given
to unpredictable fits of violent rage. Dottie loves her husband with all
her heart, and with God's help, she'd determined to remain steadfast.
Dottie's sister, Breanna Baylor, is a certified medical nurse. She's
headed west with a wagon train, planning to visit Dottie in California
and meet her family for the first time. Along the way, Breanna meets
up with wounded soldiers, contagious townspeople, and injured
outlaws. Compassionate and highly skilled, she tends to their
physical hurts and shares the gospel whenever she can. Little does
she know that a life-or-death meeting
21 awaits with her own brother-in-

Gentlemen,
There is a word that we hear at this time of year - "hibernation." We
all know the meaning in the animal world - going to sleep for a
period of time and awaking when the time is right. The men and
boys at Zion church serve in many ways, as acolytes, Scouts,
ushers, readers, altar assistants, committee and council members,
faithful fathers and sons. But one this is missing...the sound of a
choir of male voices singing God's praises at worship on Sunday. The
program started late last year, but only three men were interested. I
personally take full responsibility for our lack of success...I scheduled the rehearsals early on Sunday evenings to avoid Scouts or
homework deadlines, etc., but I forgot about the men and the late
afternoon sports activities on TV. So, the plans for the male choir are
going to have to hibernate for a while. But Lent is coming in
February, and this might just be the right time to try to activate men
and boys choir again. Gentlemen, are you willing to give up an hour
a week for rehearsal and one Sunday service to sing? This is a
challenge we can achieve. Remember, "singing is God's
language." Please think about it.
Wednesday Prayer Service
Our Wednesday Prayer services continue at 9:00 am. For those looking for
an additional opportunity to receive Holy Communion, the Prayer Group
celebrates the sacrament at its service on the fourth Wednesday of every
month. Be with us for prayers and the Sacrament on Wednesdays.

JANUARY – Somehow, even though forecasters predict strong,
chilly winds with low temperatures for this time of the year, one is
never quite prepared when it happens. But arrive they have and we
must prepare to endure and cope until spring, perhaps we should look
out the windows and enjoy the beauty that God provides when we see
snow gently falling creating a pristine, sparkling terrain.
Thank you for your gifts to the children in need living in our area
with your donations of 54 pairs of mittens to warm little hands, 50
knit, warm hats to fend off the wind and cold along with 11 colorful
scarves to complete the outfit.
Also, during December, we brought cranberry sauce to add just the
right touch of color to the holiday meals. All were deeply appreciated.
It’s a vegetable month – peas to be precise. This month, let us
provide the much needed and required vegetable for our friend’s
dinner plates and bring peas; cans and cans of peas. These come in
small as well as large cans. Or perhaps, try something different and
bring dried peas. They make a wonderful soup with an added piece of
ham; hot, nutritious and delicious!
