THE BEACON February 4, 2015 BREAKFAST LECTURE SERIES The Sermon on the Mount is the theme of our Winter Breakfast Lecture Series that meets on Friday mornings in the Fellowship Hall. A light breakfast is served each week at 7:00 a.m., followed by the program from 7:15 - 7:45 a.m. February 6 February 13 - Prayer-filled Disciples They Were Astonished WORLD HUNGER APPEAL All are encouraged to make a contribution to the Lutheran World Hunger Appeal. A special Hunger Appeal envelope is included in our envelope packets for that purpose. Envelopes may be placed in the offering plate. The Lutheran World Hunger Appeal responds to poverty in the United States and around the world by addressing root causes through relief, development work, education, and advocacy. Approximately 75% of funds are distributed internationally and 25% domestically. To date, over $1,400 has been contributed through the envelopes and the Souper Bowl luncheon. PARISH NURSE EDUCATION SERIES Sunday, February 8, from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall The Health Benefits of Forgiveness Speaker: The Reverend Mark Beck, Licensed Professional Counselor Mental Health Consultant, Emergency Department, Centra Private Mental Health Practitioner One of the findings of the Congregational Health Survey was that difficulty with forgiveness is an issue for many. There has been formal research into the benefits of being able to deal in a health-giving way with past hurts and wrongs. This program will explore what forgiveness is and what it is not, ways in which to come to forgiveness, and the health and physical benefits of forgiveness. Please place items in the narthex basket any time during the month. NEW BIBLE STUDY COURSE The Tuesday Morning Bible Study Group will begin a four-session study of Ephesians on Tuesday, February 10. THOMAS MASS The next Thomas Mass will be held Sunday, February 15, at 5:00 p.m. This service of Holy Communion is in the context of a meditative liturgy which has its roots in the Finnish Lutheran tradition. Included in this worship experience is the opportunity for informal movement between various stations for meditation and prayer. Join us for this special worship experience, especially if work, sports, or travel schedules prevent your participation on Sunday morning. MIDWEEK HOLY COMMUNION each Wednesday 12:10 - 12:30 p.m. Join us for a time of spiritual nourishment as we gather for quiet reflection, prayer, the Word, and the Meal. CAROLINE FURNACE SUMMER CAMP Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp, a Virginia Synod ministry, is now accepting reservations for the summer season. Campers in grades one through twelve are involved in prayer, Bible study, hiking, swimming, worship, recreation, crafts, singing, and campfires in the beautiful surroundings of the Shenandoah Valley. Depending on the specific in-camp program, campers will be housed in cabins or tent-like structures with solid floors called sukkahs. Those youth who choose an off-site experience will sleep in tents. The youngest campers have a choice of partial or full-week options; and, youth between the ages of sixteen and eighteen may apply to be a Counselor in Training. Check out the camp schedule and register at www.carolinefurnace.org. ASH WEDNESDAY February 18 We begin the forty-day penitential season of Lent with the centuries-old traditions of Ash Wednesday. The tribute dedication is printed in the Sunday worship bulletins along with the altar flower dedication. Included are the altar candles, the sanctuary lamp, and candles for the Globusleuchter. Weekday education activities at Holy Trinity are canceled any day that Lynchburg City Schools are closed because of the weather. Music rehearsals may be held if road conditions improve later in the day. Participants in music groups will be notified if a rehearsal will be held.
