The Monthly Newsletter of Community of Joy Lutheran Church
Fourth Sunday after Epiphany
Loving God, to turn away from you is to fall.
To turn toward you is to rise. To stand before you
is to abide forever. Grant us, dear God, in all we
do your help. In all our uncertainties your
guidance. In all our dangers your protection. In all
our sorrows your peace; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

CUP OF JOY CAFÉ RETURNS!
Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 2:00—4:00 p.m.
COJ’s Cup of Joy Café will return to the Fellowship Hall on February 7th
from 2:00-4:00 p.m.. Tarrie Burnett from Lutheran Family Services
Refugee and Asylee program will join us to give an update on the winter party where the hats, gloves and other
items we collected in December were distributed. She’ll
also share information about the programs and people she’s been involved
with since her last visit. Starbuck’s ® (courtesy of Daniel Maynard) will provide
the coffee. There will be tea and treats as well. Last year’s donations of
“place settings” (cup, plate, bowl) supplied newcomers for FOUR MONTHS,
and were greatly appreciated. Let’s do that again!
So - mark your calendar and plan to visit the Cup of Joy Café . Please bring a place
setting to donate (cup, bowl, plate). There is a list on the bulletin board in the entryway of
other items that are always appreciated. Please check the list to see if the things you are
wondering what to do with when you are doing your spring cleaning could be used to help
furnish an apartment for a refugee family. (gently used items in good shape, of course). There
will be a basket for donations instead of tickets for sale.
See you at the Cup of Joy Café on the 7th of February!
Please sign the CUP OF JOY CAFÉ sign-up sheet on the
table in the Fellowship area!

LOGO REVISION PROJECT
Please submit any ideas, drawings, doodles, or museum quality
art to the Logo bulletin board in fellowship hall, or hand sketches
or ideas to a LOGO REVISION TASK FORCE member.
Read the requirements and be creative or ask for help from a
task force artist.
Give your ideas to a Task Force member listed on the bulletin
board in the Fellowship area.
A Special Request (from our Counters)
Please remember to use your offering envelopes. The use of the
offering envelopes has several advantages. The envelopes eliminate
a step that the counters must use in the offering counting process.
Thus the process is easier and possible errors are eliminated.
Also, the envelopes can serve as a reminder to your commitment to
Community of Joy and God’s work.
Did you know that the Experience Joy! Newsletter is also online?

TWO WAYS TO SUPPORT COJ’s
GOOD SAMARITAN FUND
Smith’s Community Rewards Program
This is an easy way to provide funds to Community of Joy’s
Good Samaritan Fund.
If you are not already a Smith’s Rewards Card member, get a Smith’s
rewards card at any Smith’s. Go online and register your rewards
card account. Enter the Community of Joy NPO number 37218 on the
registration site at the Community Rewards section, Use your Smith’s
card every time you shop. It’s as simple as that.
Albertson’s Community Partners Program
Another easy way to provide funds to Community of Joy’s Good Samaritan Fund.
Here’s how the program works. Pick up an Albertson’s Community Partners card (located on
the table under the cupola). Use the card when paying your grocery bill at Albertson’s.
COJ will receive a portion of the receipts in a quarterly rebate check.
Please remember to bring pennies, nickels, dimes, etc.
for Storehouse West to help the needy in Sandoval County.
There is a jar on the entryway table where these coins may be placed. Thanks!

NM Annual Bishop's Legislative Luncheon
Tuesday, February 10, 2015
The Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Bishop's Legislative Luncheon will be Tuesday,
February 10. Make plans to attend and be sure to make your reservation (or a reservation for
a group from your congregation!) to attend this annual gathering which will begin at 12:30pm at
La Fonda in Santa Fe. Rocky Mountain Synod Bishop Jim Gonia will speak at the luncheon
and will also share a message with us during the Issues Briefing in the morning prior to the
luncheon. The day will begin at 9:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church (1701 Arroyo Chamiso) with
registration, fellowship and an opportunity to learn more about the issues for which Lutheran
Advocacy Ministry-NM will be advocating in 2015.
The cost of the luncheon is $30 person ($25 per person when 4 or more people from a
congregation or organization make reservations together). If you are only attending the
morning issues briefing, the cost is $5. Please contact Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-NM
(phone 984-8005 or email [email protected]) to make reservations or for more
details.
Lutheran Family Services
Lutheran Family Services (LFS) is proud of its Lutheran
heritage in community service. We have been extending a
healing hand to people for 66 years. We believe that all
people, from the newborn infant to the most elderly person,
deserve to be valued in our community.
Lutheran Family Services is still working hard to place
new refugee families into Albuquerque communities.
In our standard apartment set-ups, we are currently in need of:
ª
ª
ª
ª
New or gently used mixing bowls
Full/queen sheet sets
Blankets
Pillows
Please contact Donations Coordinator Sandi Bertholomey at 505.933.7014 or at
[email protected] for delivery times, to schedule a pick-up or if you have
questions.
If you are interested in learning more about LFS or have questions, please contact
Tarrie Burnett at 505.933.7015 or at [email protected].

There are times that I smell food to check for
anything questionable. The more I read the more I
know that my nose may not always know what’s
best. So, here are a few ways to safeguard your
kitchen. As the “crockpot church dinner champions”
these are just reminders for careless cookers like
me.

w
w
w
w
Don’t defrost food on the counter; use the refrigerator or the microwave
Wash your hands in hot soapy water before and after handling food
Disinfect sponges and kitchen towels regularly. (Sponges can go in the dishwasher)
Be sure to thoroughly wash cutting boards and utensil after contact with raw meats, fish or
poultry
Wash fruits and vegetables before eating
Don’t let perishable foods stay at room temperature for more than two hours
Avoid raw eggs; in recipes using eggs that aren’t cooked, such as eggnog. Use
pasteurized eggs
Avoid defective metal cans and glass jars-such as cracks, bulges and unsealed lids or
damaged seals. These can indicate a threat of botulism
Always cook fish thoroughly. Cook fish until it is opaque and flaky. Cooking destroys
bacteria

A big
Thank You! to
The Comfort and Shodean families—for providing supper this past Wednesday
Thanks so much for all your effort, food, and time over the weekend to
make COJ "shine". The food and attention to the Ministry Review
Committee was wonderful. They specifically mentioned our energy and
family atmosphere. It is evident that COJ is alive and moving forward!
I am grateful to be part of its mission—Pat Shodean
Mike Lovell—for spending his Wednesday night repairing
the water line connections in the kitchen so all the coffee
pots work now!
