Please encourage your child to read Monarch, Bluestem, and Caudill books so that she/he can vote. We will make sure that all K-2 students meet the requirements. However, students in grades 3-5, will need to be more independent if they want to vote in the state programs. Third-fifth graders need to read four Bluestem books and complete four Bluestem Reflection sheets which can be found under the Monarch butterfly mobile. Likewise, third-fifth graders need to complete the rating forms for the Monarch or Caudill programs to be able to vote for their favorite books in those programs. The rating forms are found in student folders. Battle of the Books…Read..Read..Read Please remember to encourage your child to read the books from the Battle of the Books list, paying close attention to setting, character, and plot. Art News February 2015 Dear Parents/ Guardians, In celebration of Youth Art Month, the Art Teachers of Wauconda School District 118 are collecting outstanding student work for the district art show. The show will be at the newly renovated Wauconda Area Library from April 726. The gala opening will be held on April 9th from 6:30-8:30 pm. Each art teacher brings about 125 pieces from their students. Out of the 578 art students at Cotton Creek, I can bring around 110 pieces, both 2D and 3D. I will start emailing permission slips for the District Art show this month. Please reply as soon as possible. This is a great opportunity to showcase the talents of our district artists! All student art projects will be returned at school at the end of April. Thanks for bringing in plastic water bottles, I am still 60 short. So if you could send some in with your child I’d really appreciate it. Still collecting plastic bottle caps (all sizes), thanks to all of you who’ve sent them in already. Drop boxes at are up front by lost and found. st th Our Artist of the Month for February is still Frank Lloyd Wright. We are talking about careers in Art in 1 and 4 grade and I wanted to use Wright as an example for architects. If you need to contact me my email is [email protected]. Projects planned for January: 1st grade Weaving We’ll be looking at the art of Keith Herring. The simple lines and colors of his art, comparing it to other art we have seen. We will also be attempting a weaving project on burlap. 2nd grade For most of January the 2nd graders designed a cube to coincide with their musical My Town, My World. So we will be continuing with Public Art: The kids are trying their hand at grid drawing and painting. They will not know what they are painting until we put it all together. Ahhhh the mystery! 3rd grade Color Theory The third graders are creating a color wheel by mixing their own colors. They are experimenting with primary, secondary, and the big one TERTIARY colors. We will also attempt to make different values of one HUE by adding white and black. 4th grade Radial String art weaving & Architecture Continuing with symmetrical & asymmetrical art in radial designs and in the architecture style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The students will continue working on their colored paper radial art and begin a stained glass window a la Frank Lloyd Wright. . 5th grade Figure drawing with Ancient Egyptian Art For Egyptian art we will be drawing the Egyptian profile and stance. Then using the most amazing metallic paint for extra flare, 5th graders will create tomb art. Coles Associate Superintendent Business Services William Harkin Assistant Superintendent Human Resources James LePage Director Special Education Valerie Donnan Dear Parents: In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School earlier than usual. The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule. If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark. Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the SchoolMessenger Service in an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you and your students can be prepared.
