Message From the Principal
October 2015
Dear Parents,
Wauconda Middle School strives to communicate effectively with parents in a variety of ways in regard to
their child’s progress. One way in which this is done is through our Fall conferences, which are on October 21st
and 22nd. Our student-led conferences are a way for students to take ownership of their own learning, allow
students to self-reflect/evaluate, improve their organizational and communication skills, and encourage dialogue
between the student, parent, and teacher.
Prior to the conference, each student will choose examples or demonstrations of their learning and present
these to their parent in the form of a showcase or electronic portfolio. As a result, parents will have several clear
examples of some activities that their child completed during the first quarter. After students have shared their
portfolio with their parent(s), parents and students have the ability to meet with those teachers that they would like
to dialogue with. We do ask that parents adhere to the 20 minute time slot to ensure all students and parents have
the opportunity to meet with those teachers that they would like. If you feel you need more time, please contact
your child’s homeroom teacher and schedule a meeting with the team.
It is our hope that every parent can attend his or her child’s conference in order to continue the partnership
in his or her education. Exploratory teachers and Physical Education teachers will be available in the gymnasium to
meet with parents and students. If you have not signed up for a conference and would still like to schedule a
conference please call the office at (847) 526-2122.
If you do not receive your child’s 1st Quarter Report Card please contact our office. As you are aware, this
will be the second year we will be taking the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers
(PARCC). PARCC will be taken electronically. There will only be one testing window for PARCC this year
during the spring. Please be on the look out for more information on PARCC in our upcoming newsletters.
Our students have wrapped up taking the NWEA MAP Fall Reading and Math assessments, therefore we
will also be sending home your child’s individual MAP reports with our 1st Quarter Report Cards. This assessment
serves as a tool to improve student learning because it enables teachers to recognize where to focus attention for
your child’s learning, as the test is individualized. This test is also valuable as it is given three times a year, which
allows us to monitor student progress through the year.
Maximizing communication between home and school is imperative to your child’s educational success
and something that we will continue to find ways to improve upon. Please visit our website, www.d118.org/middle
to stay up to date with what is going on at WMS! The staff and I look forward to visiting with you during
conference week. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (847) 526-2122.
Sincerely,
Daniel Stoller

NURSE NOTES
OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
As a final reminder, any 6th grade student that does not have a current physical on file must
submit a completed physical exam form to my office by the deadline of October 15, 2015.
This is a state requirement; failure to submit a physical form including immunizations
will result in your child being excluded from school on the deadline date. For those students who have not submitted a physical exam form, a letter was mailed home several times.
This is a reminder that any medication brought to school must have a medication form completed and signed by the parent/guardian for non-prescription medication or a form completed and signed by the parent/guardian and physician for prescription medications. The
school does not supply medication for student use. Cough drops and sore throat lozenges
will not be provided.
Students may not carry inhalers, epi-pens, or any other medication in their locker or on their
person without a completed medication form on file in the nurse’s office. An action plan must
be completed also and submitted with the medication form. Students that have any medication in their possession without a current medication form on file will have it taken away and a
phone call to the parent will be made.
All 8th grade students will receive a vision screening and/or have their glasses checked at the
end of this month. If your child should be wearing glasses/contacts at school, please remind
him/her to bring them and wear them. If students do not have their glasses at school on the
day of the screening, they will be screened without them, and then they will be instructed to
bring the glasses to school to be checked. A referral notice will be mailed home to those students who do not pass the screening or whose glasses are not in good condition. If you receive this notice, please contact your eye doctor at your earliest convenience to schedule an
appointment for your child. Return the completed vision examination report to me after
the doctor visit. Impaired vision can impede learning and contribute to the development of
emotional and behavioral problems. Discovery and treatment of vision problems can prevent or alleviate many problems associated with impaired vision. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
In an effort to reduce cost, we will no longer be providing feminine products free of charge.
Effective September 1, 2015, there will be a 25-cent charge for pads and tampons. Please encourage your daughter to bring supplies from home and keep them in her PE and/or hall
locker. It is also recommended to keep a change of clothing in their hall/PE locker for emergencies. Thank you for your cooperation.

Social hosting refers to adults who knowingly or unknowingly host
underage drinking parties on property that they own, lease or otherwise
control.
•
Did you know that the most common setting for drinking among high
school seniors is a private home?
•
Did you know the likelihood to engage in alcohol dependence or
abuse as an adult drastically increases if alcohol is used before the
age of 21?
•
Did you know that half the states in the U.S. have enacted social host
laws and most villages now have ordinances prohibiting social
hosting?
Please join the United Partnership for a Better Community to learn about
the biological and behavioral consequences that youth suffer when they
participate in underage drinking. Also, find out what legal ramifications can
occur for those adults who are convicted of violating social hosting laws
and ordinances as well as the potential exposure for civil lawsuits.

Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures
Due to Severe Winter Weather
Dear Parents:
In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the
students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School
earlier than usual.
The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students
in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert
Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule.
If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda
Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these
same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark.
Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation
could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the SchoolMessenger Service in
an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a
result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in
order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type
of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you
and your students can be prepared.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Daniel J. Coles

Procedimientos de Emergencia de Despido Temprano
Debido a Severo Clima de Invierno
Estimados Padres:
Si ocurre, nosotros no
Sinceramente,
Dr. Daniel J. Coles
