Message From the Principal
January 2016
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break and a Happy New Year. With
January starting up we will begin the 3rd Quarter. We are excited for the second half of the
school year to begin. There are many activities for students to get involved in second semester
so please be on the lookout for upcoming activities and events.
I would like to thank all the teachers and staff members of Wauconda Middle School for
all their hard work during this first half of the school year. They have done a great job day in
and day out working with your students to give them the best education possible. So, if you have
the time let your child’s teachers know that you appreciate all their hard work and effort.
I would like to also thank all the parents for sending your students to school everyday and
being supportive of all the teachers and staff members of Wauconda Middle School. We greatly
appreciate all your support that you have given us this year.
Wauconda Middle School is a Title I Targeted Assistance School. Title I provides
federal funding to schools to help students who are low achieving or at most risk of falling
behind. Title I is allocated to schools based on the percentage of students receiving free/reduced
lunch. Title I Targeted Assistance is a program that targets resources only to those students most
at-risk academically in reading and/or math. There is on-going progress-monitoring in place to
identify student’s at-risk and eligible for services. Parents of the students that are eligible for
Title I services will be notified. Wauconda Middle School will be starting an after school
program that will meet 2-3 days per week and will use Compass Learning Pathblazer, which is a
research based computer program with the assistance of a highly qualified teacher. This program
will be starting up during second semester.
Your child’s 2nd quarter report card will be given to your child during homeroom and
coming home during the week we return in January. In their report card your will find the 2nd
quarter grades, PARCC results, NWEA Map results, and EXPLORE results (only for the 8th
graders). So please be on the lookout for those the first week we return in January.
As always, we want to thank you for your support and partnership throughout the first
half of the school year and we look forward to a great second half of the school year.
Sincerely,
Daniel Stoller

December 2015
Dear Class of 2020 and Parents:
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to WHS Class of 2020 Preview Night on Monday, January 11,
2016. This year our program will begin at 6:00 PM in the competition gym for the parents and students of
Matthews Middle School. At 7:30 PM parents and students of Wauconda Middle School and other schools
will meet in the competition gym. A variety of topics including health requirements, curriculum offerings,
graduation requirements, school policies, and extracurricular activities will be discussed. From 7:00 PM until 9:00
PM there will be an opportunity for parents and students to meet with coaches, club sponsors, and faculty
representatives of the various subject matter areas.
We are requiring that a parent accompany students during this preview night. Again, there will be an opportunity
to meet with representatives from many of our clubs and activities from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. These sponsors
will be located in the competition gym.
We will make every attempt to meet each student’s needs as we develop next year’s schedule. Therefore, it is
imperative that parents and students take the time to seriously consider and plan a course of study prior to
registration. Registration information and freshman course selection forms will be distributed to Matthews Middle
School and Wauconda Middle School in February. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the high
school guidance counselor, Mr. Roy at 847-526-6611, extension 1010 or me at 847-526-6611, extension 1000.
The transition from middle school to high school is an exciting event. The high school experience will be a new
learning adventure. The orientation program on January 11, 2016 will help you understand what is expected of a
Wauconda High School student. We look forward to meeting with you at this important orientation meeting.
GO BULLDOGS!
Sincerely,

NURSE NOTES
JANUARY NEWSLETTER
ATTENTION ALL 6TH GRADE PARENTS- All 6th graders are required to have an oral health examination by a licensed dentist. The dentist must sign the proof of school dental examination
form. Each child is required to present proof of examination prior to May 15, 2016. School
dental examinations must have been completed within 18 months of the May 15 deadline.
Any dental exam done after November 16, 2014 will be accepted. This form is included in
this newsletter and may be found on our school website.
As a reminder, I strongly encourage you to adhere to the Health Guidelines For Students in the
WMS handbook that states, “Your child should be feeling well, free of fever (>100F), vomiting and diarrhea for at least 24 hours before returning to school following illness.”
Please note that we no longer provide cough drops or sore throat lozenges.
The cold temperatures and winter weather cause dry skin and chapped lips. Apply lubricating cream or lotion to affected, dry itchy skin several times daily especially after bathing.
Wear gloves outside to protect against the rapid evaporation of moisture from the hands. The
presence of static electricity means your home is much too dry. Run a room humidifier during the dry winter months. For chapped lips, please have your child bring lip balm or Vaseline to use at school throughout the day.

Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures
Due to Severe Winter Weather
Dear Parents:
In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the
students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School
earlier than usual.
The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students
in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert
Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule.
If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda
Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these
same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark.
Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation
could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the SchoolMessenger Service in
an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a
result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in
order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type
of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you
and your students can be prepared.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Daniel J. Coles

Procedimientos de Emergencia de Despido Temprano
Debido a Severo Clima de Invierno
Estimados Padres:
Sinceramente,
