ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, The first portion of the Synod on the Family has come to an end with the production of a document which will serve as a source of continued study and prayer the coming year. Few might remember that Pope St. John Paul also called for a Synod dealing with matters of family life in 1980. At the conclusion of those discussions he issued the Apostolic Exhortation “Familiaris Consortio” in 1981. The Apostolic Exhortation begins with the following: “The family in the modern world, as much as and perhaps more than any other institution, has been beset by the many profound and rapid changes that have affected society and culture. Many families are living this situation in fidelity to those values that constitute the foundation of the institution of the family. Others have become uncertain and bewildered over their role or even doubtful and almost unaware of the ultimate meaning and truth of conjugal and family life. Finally, there are others who are hindered by various situations of injustice in the realization of their fundamental rights. Knowing that marriage and the family constitute one of the most precious of human values, the Church wishes to speak and offer her help to those who are already aware of the value of marriage and the family and seek to live it faithfully, to those who are uncertain and anxious and searching for the truth, and to those who are unjustly impeded from living freely their family lives. Supporting the first, illuminating the second and assisting the others, the Church offers her services to every person who wonders about the destiny of marriage and the family.” Pope St. John Paul then continues to address in a positive way the perennial and unchanging truth of the Gospel concerning the human person, marriage, and family life. He also addresses a number of difficult pastoral realities concerning “trial marriages”, cohabitation, and divorce and remarriage. I reprint here that portion which concerns the admittance of the divorced and remarried to the Sacrament of the Eucharist. “Pastors must know that, for the sake of truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations. There is in fact a difference between those who have sincerely tried to save their first marriage and have been unjustly abandoned, and those who through their own grave fault have destroyed a canonically valid marriage. Finally, there are those who have entered into a second union for the sake of the children's upbringing, and who are sometimes subjectively certain in conscience that their previous and irreparably destroyed marriage had never been valid. October 26, 2014 Together with the Synod, I earnestly call upon pastors and the whole community of the faithful to help the divorced, and with solicitous care to make sure that they do not consider themselves as separated from the Church, for as baptized persons they can, and indeed must, share in her life. They should be encouraged to listen to the word of God, to attend the Sacrifice of the Mass, to persevere in prayer, to contribute to works of charity and to community efforts in favor of justice, to bring up their children in the Christian faith, to cultivate the spirit and practice of penance and thus implore, day by day, God's grace. Let the Church pray for them, encourage them and show herself a merciful mother, and thus sustain them in faith and hope. However, the Church reaffirms her practice, which is based upon Sacred Scripture, of not admitting to Eucharistic Communion divorced persons who have remarried. They are unable to be admitted thereto from the fact that their state and condition of life objectively contradict that union of love between Christ and the Church which is signified and effected by the Eucharist. Besides this, there is another special pastoral reason: if these people were admitted to the Eucharist, the faithful would be led into error and confusion regarding the Church's teaching about the indissolubility of marriage. Reconciliation in the sacrament of Penance which would open the way to the Eucharist, can only be granted to those who, repenting of having broken the sign of the Covenant and of fidelity to Christ, are sincerely ready to undertake a way of life that is no longer in contradiction to the indissolubility of marriage. This means, in practice, that when, for serious reasons, such as for example the children's upbringing, a man and a woman cannot satisfy the obligation to separate, they "take on themselves the duty to live in complete continence, that is, by abstinence from the acts proper to married couples. With firm confidence she believes that those who have rejected the Lord's command and are still living in this state will be able to obtain from God the grace of conversion and salvation, provided that they have persevered in prayer, penance and charity.” We all stand before the Lord in need of His grace. We are all sinners and at the same time we are loved by God beyond words. In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —Please remember in your prayers the repose of the souls of the faithful departed, especially: John L. Neill, father of Jack and Lorraine Neill. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who have never been baptized and those who were baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the best way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation. Every September, a new RCIA class begins at St. Leo the Great and we invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic Christianity to come and join us. While classroom work is part of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to learn! RCIA meets on Tuesdays from 7:30pm-9:00pm in the Guadalupe Room, Parish Hall.
