ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, We have completed our observance of Lent and Holy Week a few weeks ago. We began that journey of prayer, penance, and almsgiving by acknowledging our guilt and humbly accepng ashes as a sign of our repentance. We concluded that journey standing in awe of the empty tomb which could not contain the Risen Christ. And now we are on the road again. The 50 days of the Easter season prepare us to celebrate the great gi0 of the Holy Spirit first received by the Apostles and our Blessed Mother at Pentecost. The season of Easter is given to us not only to bask in the glory of Christ now risen and triumphant over sin and death, but to pray with fervor that the gi0s of the Holy Spirit come alive within our lives. So abundant is the life giving power of the Spirit that we speak of seven gi0s: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. The Catechism states that “the moral life of Chrisans is sustained by the gi0s of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent disposions which make man docile in following the prompngs of the Holy Spirit….They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspiraons.” Less known perhaps are the “twelve fruits” of the Holy Spirit. These are the “perfecons that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory”. The tradion of the Church lists them as being charity, joy, peace, paence, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chasty. Christ has conquered human weakness, sin, and death. In doing so, He has not removed painful realies from human experience but He has robbed them of their power and has transformed them into pathways to glory. As we now journey yet again through this Easter season, may we never forget that we do so accompanied by the Risen Lord and forfied by the Holy Spirit. We are now able to move forward through even the darkest of situaons and gravest of pains with confidence and hope. Alone we cannot help but fail, but with God all things are possible. On behalf of all the priests and deacons of St. Leo parish, I wish you a blessed and happy Easter! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I recently received word that St. Leo School Fourth Grade Girls’ Basketball Team was the recipient of the CYO April 10, 2016 Sportsmanship Award. This disncon is voted on by the coaches in the respecve leagues and is awarded to the team that best exemplifies the qualies of sportsmanship and Chrisan values. Not only did the girls maintain a posive a!tude in victory and defeat, they always supported and cheered for their opponents. They played fairly, within the rules of the game, and were always respec#ul. Congratulaons and a special thanks to the coaches and all of our volunteers. In Christ, Rev. David A.
