October 18, 2015 - St. Leo the Great Catholic Church | Fairfax, Virginia

ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA
www.stleofairfax.com
Dear Friends,
Last week I shared from the Catechism of the
Catholic Church the teaching that “a system that
‘subordinates the basic rights of individuals and of groups
to the collecve organizaon of producon’ is contrary to
human dignity…The Church has rejected the totalitarian
and atheisc ideologies associated with ‘communism’ or
‘socialism’.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes
“society” as a “group of persons bound together
organically by a principle of unity that goes beyond each
one of them”. Human beings have a natural tendency to
associate with one another for the sake of a aining
objecves that exceed individual capacies. This
“socializaon” develops the qualies of the person,
especially the sense of iniave and responsibility, and
helps guarantee his rights. At the same me the Church
clearly warns of the dangers of “socializaon”: “Excessive
intervenon by the state can threaten personal freedom
and iniave.” Social instuons, therefore, must be
governed by the principle of subsidiarity.
The principle of subsidiarity was defined by Pope
Pius XI in Quadragesimo Anno: “A community of a higher
order should not interfere in the internal life of a
community of a lower order, depriving the la er of its
funcons, but rather should support it in case of need and
help to co-ordinate its acvity with the acvies of the rest
of society, always with a view to the common good.”
Praccally, this principle has several ramificaons. This
principle outlaws collecvism or any form of government
that subordinates the individual to the state. It limits state
intervenon and aims at harmonizing relaons between
individuals and sociees.
The Church condemns the noon of “state
control” over the economic, cultural, social, and
educaonal life of individuals even if the professed
purpose of such control is the advancement of the rights of
those in need. Pope St. John Paul II in Centesimus Annus
restates the perennial teaching of the Church:
“[Pope Leo XIII’s] words deserve to be re
-read a envely: ‘To remedy these wrongs (the
unjust distribuon of wealth and the poverty of
the workers), the Socialists encourage the poor
man’s envy of the rich and strive to do away with
private property, contending that individual
possessions should become the common
property of all…; but their contenons are so
October 18, 2015
clearly powerless to end the controversy that,
were they carried into effect, the working man
himself would be among the first to suffer. They
are moreover emphacally unjust, for they
would rob the lawful possessor, distort the
funcons of the State, and create u er confusion
within the community’. The evils caused by
se"ng up this type of socialism as a State system
could not be be er expressed.
“Connuing our reflecons and referring
to what has been said in the Encyclicals Laborem
exercens and Sollicitudo rei socialis, we have to
add that the fundamental error of socialism is
anthropological in nature. Socialism considers
the individual person simply as an element, a
molecule within the social organism, so that the
good of the individual is completely subordinated
to the funconing of the socio-economic
mechanism. Socialism likewise maintains that the
good of the individual can be realized without
reference to his free choice, to the unique and
exclusive responsibility which he exercises in the
face of good or evil. Man is thus reduced to a
series of social relaonships and the concept of
the person as the autonomous subject of moral
decision disappears, the very subject whose
decisions build the social order. From this
mistaken concepon of the person there arises
both a distoron of law, which defines the
sphere of exercise of freedom, and an opposion
to private property. A person who is deprived of
something he can call ‘his own’, and of the
possibility of earning a living though his own
iniave, comes to depend on the social machine
and on those who control it. This makes it much
more difficult to recognize his dignity as a
person, and hinders the progress towards
building up of an authenc human community.”
In Christ,
Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
(RCIA) is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church
both those who have never been baptized & those who
were baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the
way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to
prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation, Confirmation.
Every September, a new RCIA process begins at St. Leo.
We invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic
Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in
learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic
Christianity to come and join us. While classes are part of
the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual
introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and
devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an
opportunity to learn! RCIA meets on Tuesdays, from
7:30-9 pm in the Guadalupe Room.
Adult Confirmation Adults who wish to receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation need to attend the RCIA
classes on Tuesday evenings. Classes have begun and
will continue through March, 2016. Adult Confirmation will
take place at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in
Arlington, on May 14 & 15, 2016.
For more information about any of the above, please contact
Carolyn at [email protected] or 703-273-5369.
