ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com May 1, 2016 Dear Friends, May is tradionally a month to remember and give honor to Mary. It also happens to be the me we prepare to celebrate the giving of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and Mary at Pentecost. I think it appropriate therefore to share the teaching of the Catechism regarding the movement of the Holy Spirit in the life of Mary and perhaps to begin to appreciate what the presence of the Holy Spirit can achieve in our own lives. “Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of me. For the first me in the plan of salvaon and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men. The Holy Spirit prepared Mary by his grace. It was fi)ng that the mother of him in whom ‘the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily’ should herself be ‘full of grace.’ She was, by sheer grace, conceived without sin as the most humble of creatures, the most capable of welcoming the inexpressible gi- of the Almighty. In Mary, the Holy Spirit fulfills the plan of the Father’s loving goodness. Through the Holy Spirit, the Virgin conceives and gives birth to the Son of God. By the Holy Spirit’s power and her faith, her virginity became uniquely frui1ul. In Mary, the Holy Spirit manifests the Son of the Father, now become the Son of the Virgin. She is the burning bush of the definive theophany. Filled with the Holy Spirit she makes the Word visible in the humility of his flesh. Finally, through Mary, the Holy Spirit begins to bring men, the objects of God’s merciful love, into communion with Christ. And the humble are always the first to accept him. At the end of his mission of the Spirit, Mary became the Woman, the new Eve (‘mother of the living)’, the mother of the ‘whole Christ’. As such, she was present with the Twelve, who ‘with one accord devoted themselves to prayer,’ at the dawn of the ‘end me’ which the Spirit was to inaugurate on the morning of Pentecost with the manifestaon of the Church.” Friends, Mary’s role in God’s work of salvaon is certainly unique but we must not forget that the Holy Spirit who accomplished such greatness in Mary is the very same Spirit acve in our own lives. We too are being prepared to be more perfectly the dwelling place of the Son and to manifest the goodness of the God in the world.
