ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, We are all looking forward to the upcoming visit of Our Holy Father. Pope Francis will celebrate Mass canonizing Blessed Junipero Serra, O.F.M. on Sunday September 23rd at 4:15 PM on the East Porco of the Basilica of the Naonal Shrine of the Immaculate Concepon. Our parish has been allocated 2 ckets for seats and 4 ckets for standing only. Seated ckets are not assigned; they are filled on a first come, first served basis. The diocese has recommended that each parish distribute the ckets in a “fair” way to “registered members of the parish” through a drawing or “lo:ery”. I will draw three names from those submi:ed by interested parishioners. The first name drawn will receive 2 ckets for seats. The second and third names drawn will each receive 2 ckets for standing room. Beginning this weekend through Sunday September 13th registered parishioners are asked to fill out the cards found at the entrance of the church with their names, addresses, and phone numbers to parcipate in this chance to join with the Holy Father for this Mass. Please note that those a:ending the Mass must arrive at Catholic University early, and that they may be there for as long as 6 hours or more, not counng transportaon me. This will be a strenuous day, parcularly if weather condions are not ideal. +++++ Our annual parish picnic is planned for Saturday September 12. This is a wonderful me to join together with fellow parishioners for good food, music, games, and fellowship. My personal highlight is the dunk tank. I regret I will not be able to parcipate in this event this year. I assure you I am not leaving town because the proximity to the dunk tank acvity and my announcing our new Capital Campaign. Actually, Bishop Loverde nominated me and I have been elected by the bishops of Region IV (the Archdioceses of Washington, Balmore, the Military Services, and the dioceses of Arlington, Richmond, Wheeling- Charleston, and Wilmington) to serve as a priest representave on the Naonal Advisory Council of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Council is made up of approximately 40 persons (priest, religious, and lay) from across the United States to assist our Bishops by sharing our thoughts, and insights regarding the various issues facing the church in the United Stated. One of our meengs is scheduled for the weekend of our parish picnic and so I will not be here. My term is for 5 years. I will miss all the fun but I am honored to be able to serve our larger September 6, 2015 church and to be able in some way share my experience – formed largely by your own witness and faith- on a naonal level. In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor Saint Leo Parish Picnic and Festival combined! Please join us on Saturday, September 12th from 11 am to 3 pm when we will gather together as a Church and School to enjoy food, rides, games and the company of our friends. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who have never been baptized & those who were baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation, Confirmation. Every September, a new RCIA process begins at St. Leo. We invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic Christianity to come and join us.
