We are honored to meet each one of them at our door welcoming them into an extraordinary place, where we provide the needed services for them to become stable and begin to build a fulfilling life. Thank you for your continuous support to our kids. Peace, Jim White Executive Director Safeguarding Children and Addressing Abuse: The Archdiocese Addresses Victims’ Concerns — Since his arrival in 2001 and his participation in the drafting of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, Archbishop Myers has on many occasions either individually or with bishops in the United States, with the Holy Father, and with clergy throughout the world, acknowledged publicly the pain that sexual offenders inside the Church have inflicted on the innocent. At Chrism Masses before the entire presbyterate and parish representatives of the Archdiocese, in media interviews, in statements issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and in essays and columns, Archbishop Myers has stated that “a Church which spends the largest portion of its resources and the largest portion of its personnel in serving children, can never, and will never, condone anything which harms those children. We also extend our apology and our assurance of support and help to those who have been harmed and who are seeking healing and support.” Beyond words, however, are actions. Assistance to victims, training and background checks of staff and volunteers, reporting accusations to civil authorities removing clergy with substantiated accusations are clear indications that the Archbishop and the Archdiocese abhor child abuse. What’s more, 20 years ago, the Archdiocese was one of the first dioceses in the country to establish a formal Review Board of experts with legal, law enforcement, clinical and investigative background to examine allegations of abuse and recommend to the Archbishop action under Church law. The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at 201-407-3256. 2017 Youth Rally and Mass for Life The 2017 Youth Rally and Mass for Life will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 in Washington DC. Background on the Gospel Reading This Sunday we break from our reading of Matthew's Gospel (the primary Gospel for our current liturgical cycle, Cycle A) to read from John's Gospel. We heard Matthew's account of Jesus' baptism last Sunday, on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Today, we hear John the Baptist's testimony about Jesus as found in John's Gospel. John's Gospel differs from the other Gospels because John does not describe Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist. Instead, John the Baptist announces that he knows that Jesus is the Son of God. In today's reading, John the Baptist sees Jesus approaching and cries out, giving witness about who Jesus is. In John's testimony he says that he saw the Spirit descend upon Jesus. By this sign, John the Baptist knew that Jesus was the one who is to come after him. John the Baptist uses two titles for Jesus that are familiar to us. John calls Jesus the “Lamb of God” and the “Son of God.” By using these titles, John the Baptist identifies Jesus' ultimate purpose: to redeem sinful humanity. John the Baptist's testimony about Jesus clearly distinguishes John's baptism from the Baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John baptizes with water; Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John also puts his practice of baptism in the context of Jesus' ministry. The purpose of John's baptism was to make Jesus known to Israel. John the Baptist's sense of purpose is clearly identified in this reading: he baptized in order to prepare for and make known the ministry of the One who was to follow. John's witness is an excellent example of what it means to be a disciple. By our Baptism, we are called to make Jesus known to all the world by our words and by the witness of our lives.
