Thirtieth Sunday of Ordinary Time
October 23, 2016
St. Didacus Parish is sponsoring this special event and
invites you to join us for a talk on
"Mercy and Social Justice
and Civic Engagement”
with Fr. Jon Pedigo
from the Office of Social Justice
of the Diocese of San José
Thursday, October 27th
6:30 PM—7:30 PM English
8:00 PM—9:00 PM Spanish
St. Didacus Parish Hall
You’ve heard the phrase “Social Justice”
but might not be sure what it means—especially to Catholics.
Does it involve creating a better world? Can one person really
make a difference? Learn more about what the Catholic Church
teaches on this topic and how to better incorporate it into your
life.
Fr. Jon Pedigo, STL, is traveling from the Bay Area to be here
for this talk. He has been active in civic affairs and social justice
causes for over 25 years. Join us for this free event and bring a
friend!
Our Parish Feast Day
Celebration and
90th Anniversary Party
are right around the corner!
Bishop McElroy will be here to celebrate
Mass on Sunday, November 6th at 10am.
Mass will be followed by a reception in
the Parish Hall.
Everyone is welcome!
Plan to join us for our
Potluck Dinner Celebration on
Sunday, November 6th
at 5pm in the Parish Hall
Bring a dish to share:
A-G Side Dish H-R Main Dish S-Z Salad
The most exciting part about this
event is the raffle! Almost everyone is a winner —and the best
way to make sure of that is to
have lots of great prizes!
Help us out by donating new and
“like-new” items that could be used for raffle prizes.
Look around your house or pick up something at the
store and bring your items to the Parish Office. Thank
you!
This weekend we
celebrate
World Mission Sunday!
In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of
Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Dear Brothers and Sisters, I
have often thought about how the Church might make
clear its mission of being a witness to mercy.” Supporting
young churches throughout the world with your prayers
and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this
mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer
the poor of these areas practical help as they share the
mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local
dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay
leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need.
Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through
your gift in today’s collection for the Society of the
Propagation of the Faith!
Go out to the whole world through
your gift in today’s collection!
There are special collection envelopes in the pews.
Please return them in the collection basket
or to the Parish Office.
In practice,
probably most of us
are totally like
neither the Pharisee
nor the tax collector.
So both can teach us
something. The
Pharisee can teach us
that religious
practices are
important, but not
enough. They must always be performed with
humility and with the goal of deepening our
relationship with God. The tax collector can teach us
that God doesn’t offer salvation to the perfect, but to
those who acknowledge their sinfulness and cry out
for God’s mercy. Like the tax collector, we must let
God be God and receive the mercy offered. Though
sinners, God exalts those who are in right
relationship. Rather than focus unduly on our own
sinfulness, we need to turn to God and ask for mercy.

Stewardship—Building up the Community of God
Thank you for using your envelopes!
Our GOAL this year:
ALL parishioners tithing each week using their envelopes!
The Joy of Giving
Amount we need each week to cover parish operating costs:
General Collection, October 16, 2016:
Deficit for the week of October 16, 2016:
$7,155.00
$5,627.00
— $1,528.00
Building Fund—October 16, 2016:
$ 512.00
Pride and ego are the root causes of most of our sins. Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and
your money gives you status is another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were
God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity and our hearts should be filled with gratitude.

National Collection
for the
Archdiocese for the
Military Services
Next weekend we are
asked to participate in
this special collection.
The Archdiocese for
the Military Services,
USA (AMS) was established by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1985 to provide the
Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries to
those in the United States Armed Forces.
The mission of the Archdiocese is to “serve those who
serve” by providing the same pastoral care and services
as any other Catholic diocese to Catholics serving in the
United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military
Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153
Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers in the
U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, working in civilian jobs for
the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the
families of these populations. Programs and services
vital to the unique mission and ministry of the Archdiocese include vocations, pastoral visitation, endorsement
of chaplains, evangelization and catechesis, sacramental
records, Tribunal, and Veterans Affairs.
To learn more about the mission and ministry of the
AMS, please visit www.milarch.org/
nationalcollection.com.
There are special envelopes for this collection in the
pews. Please take one home today and return it in
next week’s collection.
Pray for our Diocesan Synod taking
place on October 29th & 30th
This is the first general assembly in the
diocese in 40 years. This assembly will
focus on how the San Diego Diocese
and its individual parishes can strengthen marriage and families, give pastoral
support to divorced Catholics and invite
unmarried couples into the fold, all
challenges faced by the Church. At the end of the synod, the
delegates will present five proposals to the bishop, who has
committed to implementing them. The seed for the synod was
planted by Pope Francis earlier this year. In his teaching
document “Amoris Laetitia” (“Joy of Love”), the pope invited
dioceses around the world to reflect on the state of families in
their region and to find ways to strengthen them.
