Page 2 All Souls Day Everlasting Life November 2, 2014 Don’t forget about our St. Didacus Parish Feast Day Celebration and our 88th Anniversary! It’s not easy to move from mourning through faith to hope. The value of annually celebrating this feast day is that we remember our beloved dead in the midst of a community of faith that believes in the resurrection. NEXT WEEKEND! Traditionally, many practices of prayer, penance and good works take place on this day, and this is surely a good thing to do. At the same time, this day reminds us that we are called now to live lives of prayer, penance and good works, that we ought not live our faith minimally and hope for the best after we die, relying on God’s mercy. God is forgiving and merciful, to be sure, but at the same time we are called to be faithful disciples of Jesus. Our belief in him must translate to doing good. Paul asks in his letter to the Romans, “Are you unaware…?” Unfortunately, all too many of us do seem to be unaware of our baptismal commitment. Baptism is an ongoing YES to doing God’s will in our lives, conforming ourselves to God’s will, accepting the challenge of Gospel living. This Yes requires that we continually be “ buried with Christ...into death.” This means that we are daily to die to ourselves, thus preparing for our final, physical death. Dying to ourselves isn’t simply a matter of the “big things.” It’s a matter of doing everything for the good of another. In smiling to those who seem sad or tired, in lending a helping hand to the overburdened, in sharing with those less fortunate than ourselves, we are already expressing our own belief in the Son who freely offer us everlasting life. —Living Liturgy Call the Parish Office to RSVP for: Missionary Disciples: The New Evangelization with Bishop Brom Saturday, November 15th 9:00am-noon Potluck Dinner Sunday, November 9th 5:00pm in the Parish Hall Please bring a dish to share from the categories listed by your last name: A-G Side Dish H-R Main Dish S-Z Salad We still need raffle prizes! Bring your donations to the Parish Office! Praying for the Dead Once every year, the liturgical calendar invites us to talk frankly about death. On All Souls’ Day, we remember those whom we have lost to this world. Depending on our mileage, that list can be short or lengthy. For some of us, the list of names is so long, we have to trust that God remembers the ones we forget now and then. In reciting the litany of names, we testify to our faith that these people are not lost to life in ultimate ways, nor to God. They stand now with the cloud of witnesses in the company of the saints. And what if some of our loved ones traveled rough roads, leaving some unfinished business and un-mended fences? In the economy of grace, prayer is our most valuable currency. In praying for the dead, we help them do what may have been left undone. How do you remember the dead? How do you partner with them in what has been done and in what is yet to do?
