Page 2 Second Sunday of Advent Called to Conversion As the journey of Advent continues, as we prepare to celebrate the nativity of Christ, John the Baptist's call to conversion sounds out in our communities. It is a pressing invitation to open our hearts and to welcome the Son of God who comes among us to make divine judgement manifest. The Father, writes St. John the Evangelist, does not judge anyone, but has entrusted the power of judgement to the Son, because He is the Son of man. And it is today, in the present, that we decide our future destiny. It is with our concrete everyday behavior in this life that we determine our eternal fate. At the end of our days on earth, at the moment of death, we will be evaluated on the basis of our likeness or otherwise to the Baby who is about to be born in the poor grotto of Bethlehem, because He is the measure God has given humanity. Through the Gospel, John the Baptist continues to speak down the centuries to each generation. His hard clear words bring health to us, the men and women of this day in which even the experience and perception of Christmas often, unfortunately, reflects materialist attitudes. The 'voice' of the great prophet asks us to prepare the way for the coming Lord in the deserts of today, internal and external deserts, thirsting for the water of life which is Christ. —www.catholicculture.org Collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious is Next Weekend Aging religious need your help. Thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies—often for little pay. Their sacrifices leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection helps provide prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. There are special envelopes in the pews for this collection. Please take one home today and return it next week. December 4, 2016 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday, December 8th Mass times: 8:30am and 6:00pm Please note that we will not have our regular 7:30am Mass On Thursday, December 8th we celebrate the Patronal Feastday of the United States of America and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holyday of Obligation. Although the Gospel reading of that day narrates the story of Jesus’ conception, this solemnity celebrates the Immaculate Conception of Mary, as she was conceived in her mother’s womb. Prepared by God from the very first moment of her life to receive Jesus Christ, God’s grace preserved Mary from sin from the womb to the end of her life, because of her role in the mystery of salvation as the mother of God. This solemnity praises God for the hope and possibility that Mary embodies, as we turn to our Blessed Mother to learn from the first and most important relationship Jesus Christ experienced among us. Mary’s freedom from the sin of Adam and Eve is shown in her response to the angel. She shows her willingness to place herself fully in God’s hands, even when it promises to be difficult and requires great faith and trust. Let us follow her example this Advent season and faithfully place ourselves in God’s hands. Matthew describes the work and preaching of John the Baptist. John appears in the tradition of the great prophets of Israel, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. In fact, the description of John found in this reading is reminiscent of the description of the prophet Elijah in 2 Kings 1:8. John the Baptist directs a particularly pointed call to repentance to the Pharisees and Sadducees, parties within the Jewish community of the first century. John marks the conversion of those who seek him out with a baptism of repentance. In today’s Gospel, John makes very clear that his relationship to the Messiah yet to come (Jesus) is one of service and subservience: “. . . the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals” (Matthew 3:11). In the context of Matthew's Gospel, today's passage is followed by Jesus' baptism by John, an event that is attested to in all four of the Gospels and appears to have been the start of Jesus' public ministry. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus in the first century, we, too, are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by our repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives, as John did, the coming of the Lord. —www.loyolapress.com Kid’s Corner Immaculate Conception Word-Find Many thanks to parishioner, Jim Croff, and his crew for reseating the railing on the handicap ramp on the south side of the Church and for doing some cement repair on the steps. We appreciate their donation of time and talent to our parish! Dear Lord, Through the darkness, I look for your wisdom. I want my heart to be open to you. But sometimes in these days, it seems that so many things come between us. Help me to be awake and aware of the radiance you bring to my life. Help me to be grateful each day for the blessings of family and friends. Let me be a peacemaker in my own life, and in the world. Let me pray especially for this difficult world and those who are so in need of an end to violence. My heart begs for this as my Advent prayer today.
