Dear Parishioners, The recently placed icon behind the Blessed Sacrament tabernacle is a copy of the famous Russian icon painted a6er fas#ng, prayer, and contempla#on of the iconographer Andrei Rublev. It depicts the event of Genesis 18:1-14 when the three people visit Abraham, the Father of our faith. In this visit Abraham had a deep experience of the presence of the One and Only. Abraham realized that he was visited by God in the three persons. The icon shows the persons of the Holy Trinity siGng in the order that we profess them in the Creed. The Father is on the right, the Son is in the middle, and the Holy Spirit is on the right. Looking at the three persons together their bodies form a circle which symbolizes their unity or oneness. All three persons are siGng around a table blessing a chalice. In the chalice is a sacrificed calf. This symbolizes the Redeemer’s death on the cross and the sacrament of the Eucharist. Above the head of the “Father” on the le6 is a house which is the abode of Abraham with a sacrificial altar in front of the house. The house symbolizes God’s master plan for crea#on and that the house is above the “Father” image iden#fies him as the master of crea#on. This is similar to the tree above the Redeemer’s head which symbolizes the tree of the garden of Eden in which our first parents disobeyed God and the tree of the Cross on which the obedience of the Son redeemed the world. Above the third angel on the right, the Holy Spirit, there is a mountain. This symbolizes that through the Holy Spirit we are elevated or can climb to lo6y heights of grace, purity, and holiness. This icon, as any icon, is theology in image and color. It reminds us of the living presence of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our midst, especially as we gather to celebrate the Eucharist and when we come to pray before the Eucharist. This icon was a gi6 to the parish from Deacon Mark and Chris Gray. We thank them for their kindness and generosity.
