Knock, knock. Who’s there?
Almost everybody knows how those old jokes start. It’s not just a joke; it’s how we handle almost all
our encounters with strangers. The phone rings and you ask, “Who is it?” There is a moment of testing
before you decide if you will open the door or continue the conversation. We usually hang up on a
sales person—especially during dinner. A good friend is invited into a deeper, closer conversation or
welcomed into our home. Burglars are barred from entry—if we spot them. We don’t let in everybody
who knocks at the door; but we don’t reject everybody, either. It’s a pretty solid way to handle our
personal life. It seems to me it would be a pretty solid way to handle our national life.
Unfortunately, we usually have only two opposing policies thrown at us: everybody or nobody. Many people hate the
politicians who say, “Let everybody into our country.” Many other people hate the politicians who say, “Let nobody into
our country.” And we know what happens. These two opposing positions put us into camps and the fires of fear and
hatred pour out from our hearts.
Look at the ‘everybody’ position, look at the people who say “Let everybody into our country.” When this comes from
political leaders, this means “Let everybody into your part of the country.” Our politicians do not let everyone into their
part of the country; the White House is the most secure house in the world. Nobody gets in without security clearance.
Even if you’ve come to the US from another country, you want your home here to be safe. Safety requires identifying
the stranger. All humanity is wounded by original sin. Regardless of our country of origin, we are all capable of terrible
crimes. So we have to ask “Who’s there?” when the knock comes at the door. This is simply good common sense and
shows a noble spirit of protection for those we love. Safety compels us to limit access to the more intimate parts of our
lives. This safety is an expression of love and justice.
Now look at the ‘nobody’ position, look at the people who say “Nobody should come into our country.” Granted, this
position is not absolute, but it is pretty broad. It can even come from the good desire for safety mentioned above. But it
can also come from a fear of economic loss, cultural loss, and personal loss. We have to be careful here also, because
self-preservation can be an excuse for self-indulgence and selfishness. Will I lose my way of life if other people
overwhelm it? Actually, you might find your life if you open yourself up to others. I know I would not be here unless my
mother and father welcomed each other into their own lives. All of us come from somewhere else, from the God who
created us. And when we get here, we’ve got absolutely nothing. Human babies are probably the weakest of all God’s
creatures, completely dependent on the charity of those around them. Each person in the world is a child of God, filled
with blessings that come from heaven. So a proper openness to others is also a wonderful expression of love and justice, too.
The Blessed Virgin Mary exercises beautifully these two attitudes of safety and openness as expressions of love. It’s
how Jesus arrived here. An angel came knocking upon Mary’s door. It caused her some trouble, but she took some time
to identify him as coming from God. Then she opened herself up to receive Christ, Emmanuel, God-with-us. She lost her
life as Mary the single young girl, but discovered a new life of Blessed Mary, Mother of God and mother of all his
creation. Creation and all creatures are his—there are no foreigners to Christ. He brings along with him smelly, working
shepherds and great, wise men; glorious choirs of angels and the world worst sinners will all sing his praises. Christ did
not abandon a dark world filled with hate and war—he came to save it. He found in his Blessed Mother a beautiful,
faithful place for him to begin that work.
You and I cannot control the entire world or even our own neighborhoods—or even our own hearts. But if you give your
heart to Christ, he would love to live here with you. And his presence will make your part of the world more peaceful,
with the peace that only comes from heaven and is the only peace that will last forever. In the midst of your fears, he
will teach you how to be both a guardian of security and still generously open to the lives of those around you. Safety
and openness can both be expression of his love. But first, you have to let him into your heart, into your life.
Who’s there? It is Christ. He is saying to you, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”
With my prayers,
Fr. Jerome

ST. MATTHEW
CONTINUING THE MISSION CAMPAIGN
News from
We Teach More ~ ~ About Our Saints!
We Teach More was evident in our third grade
classrooms this week. The students in Mrs. Bergeron
and Mrs. Sulda’s third grade classrooms joined
together to watch Juan Diego, Messenger of God to
learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe. After watching
the video, both classes joined together to discuss
Mexico City, the Aztecs, Spanish Conquistadors and
measles covering geography, science, reading and
religion curriculum. After their discussion the children
made a Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe
ornament to hang on their Christmas tree.

Miqueas hubiera podido hacerlo primero.
