December 27, Feast of the Holy Family
Views from Fr. Larry Pichard, Pastor
Even though many people have already put away their
Christmas trees and decorations, we Catholics continue the
Christmas Season for a long time as we continue to reflect upon
the significance of the Son of God becoming human. First comes
the “Octave of the Nativity”—which lasts from Christmas Day till
the Feast of Mary the Mother of God on January 1. Then the
popular secular song, “On the Twelfth Day of Christmas” really
refers to the Church’s ancient celebration of the twelve days of
Christmas which runs from Christmas Day till January 6, the Feast
of the Epiphany—count them! However, in recent times the
Church transfers the Epiphany to the nearest Sunday, and this
year it will be January 3. But, wait—we aren’t through
celebrating. In fact, Christmas season lasts till January 10, the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The reason is that those events
of the Christmas Season are all “epiphanies” or manifestations of
the Divinity shining through—the birth of Jesus, his manifestation
to the Magi, and his baptism when the Father says, “This is my
Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” So, just keep
celebrating even if the world isn’t!
So, regarding what the world calls New Year’s Eve and
New Year’s Day, we Catholics call it the Solemnity of Mary, the
Holy Mother of God, and it is a holyday of obligation. On
Thursday, December 31, we have the anticipatory Mass in
English at 6:00 pm; Confessions are cancelled that Thursday
night. On Friday, January 1 we have Masses in English at 9:45
and 11:30 am; Mass in Spanish at 1:15.
On Wednesday, December 30 seminarians from the
seminary called Redemptoris Mater (translated “the Mother of
the Redeemer”) will offer a beautiful concert of Christmas music
and other music. The concert starts at 7:00 pm in the Church, and
a reception follows. Tickets are $20. The proceeds help fund
seminary expenses. Regular 6:30 pm Mass cancelled.
Next Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, and
the special collection that day will be for the Diocese of Trujillo,
Honduras which our diocese adopted several years ago after
Hurricane Mitch destroyed the very poor eastern side of
Honduras.
In November we conducted our parish’s commitment to
the Diocesan Capital Campaign called “Our Faith…Our Future”
which has been seeking to raise $125 million. Our parish goal was
$2 million. I want, now that 2015 is almost over, to thank each
one of you who pledged. You did great—you pledged $3.7
million, absolutely amazing. Remember that our parish gets to
keep 30% of the donations up to $2 million and then 70% of the
donations that surpass $2 million. We will be able to use maybe
$1 million to reduce the $7 million debt that we still owe by
constructing our new Church and Chapel. That will help us more
quickly build new classrooms and meeting rooms in the future.
May the Lord continue to bless you for your generosity!
Visiones del Párroco, Pbro. Larry Pichard
